The feature is now increasingly called Xbox mode. It makes a Windows handheld feel more like a console without replacing Windows 11, Armoury Crate SE, Steam, or other PC launchers.

What is the Xbox Full-Screen Experience?
The Xbox Full-Screen Experience is a controller-first gaming interface layered over Windows 11. It puts games, libraries, Game Pass, chat, settings, and launcher access ahead of the traditional Windows desktop and touch-focused navigation.

Microsoft introduced it with the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. It later became available on Windows 11 handhelds already on the market, and Microsoft now refers to the broader Windows rollout as Xbox mode, formerly known as the full-screen experience.

This is not a new Xbox console operating system. ROG Ally devices remain Windows 11 PCs, with access to ordinary desktop applications, files, launchers, and the Windows desktop.
Is it available on the original ROG Ally?
Microsoft has confirmed the experience for Windows 11 handhelds, but that does not prove that every original ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, regional SKU, or software configuration has identical support at the same time.
For an original ROG Ally or ROG Ally X, treat availability as dependent on:
- An up-to-date Windows 11 installation.
- The latest Xbox PC app and Xbox Game Bar.
- Current ASUS Armoury Crate SE software, firmware, and drivers.
- Microsoft’s staged rollout and regional availability.
- The exact handheld model and its current software build.
The newer ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X were designed around this experience and boot directly into the controller-optimized interface. Existing ROG Ally owners should update their devices and check before considering a hardware upgrade.
Xbox Full-Screen Experience versus Xbox mode

Microsoft explicitly connected the names in its April 2026 Xbox mode announcement.
What changes compared with normal Windows 11?

On ROG Xbox Ally devices, Microsoft says the Xbox button opens an enhanced Game Bar overlay for chat, apps, settings, launching or quitting games, and access to ASUS Armoury Crate controls. Exact buttons and behavior can differ on older ROG Ally hardware.
Which games and stores can it show?
The interface is intended to bring together Xbox games, Game Pass titles, installed PC games, Battle.net games, and games from other leading PC storefronts. Microsoft also identifies Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Remote Play as supported parts of the broader experience where the relevant service, account, region, and network connection are available.

A title may still:
- Open through its original launcher.
- Require a separate account sign-in.
- Need a keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, or manual controller mapping.
- Be affected by anti-cheat restrictions.
- Require an active Game Pass membership or a particular plan.
Game Pass access is not included simply because Xbox mode is installed. Catalog access varies by membership, plan, platform, region, and availability. The official Xbox Game Pass page has the current subscription details.

How to check for the feature on a ROG Ally
There is no single menu path that can safely be guaranteed across every ROG Ally model and Windows build. Use this update checklist instead:
- Install all available updates through Windows Update.
- Open the Microsoft Store and update the Xbox PC app.
- Update Xbox Game Bar in the Microsoft Store.
- Open Armoury Crate SE and install available ASUS software, firmware, driver, and device updates.
- Restart the handheld.
- Open the Xbox app once, then check the handheld’s Xbox or Game Bar controls for the full-screen gaming interface or Xbox mode.
- Launch a game and confirm that you can return to the Windows desktop.
Microsoft’s current ROG Xbox Ally guidance specifically calls for current Armoury Crate SE, Xbox PC app, Game Bar, and Windows 11 updates for the latest improvements.

Do not assume that the device is permanently unsupported. Try these steps:
- Restart after completing every update.
- Check that the Microsoft Store is signed into the intended Microsoft account.
- Open the Xbox app before searching for the full-screen interface.
- Update ASUS firmware and Armoury Crate SE separately from Windows Update.
- Confirm that the handheld is running a supported Windows 11 configuration.
- Use Armoury Crate SE or the Windows desktop as the fallback launcher.
A staged rollout, regional availability, an outdated app, or a device-specific limitation may explain why the option is missing. Avoid registry edits, unofficial shell replacements, or removing Windows components unless an authoritative support procedure specifically requires it.
Does it replace Armoury Crate SE?
No. Xbox mode and Armoury Crate SE serve different purposes.

Armoury Crate SE remains useful for power profiles, performance settings, lighting, button customization, and other ASUS-specific controls. The Xbox interface is best understood as a more console-like front end, not a replacement for ASUS management software.
Can you still use the Windows desktop?
Yes. ASUS documents a Windows Desktop button inside the full-screen experience. Selecting it returns you to the Windows desktop, including the taskbar, Start menu, File Explorer, and normal PC applications.
That distinction matters: Xbox mode changes how the handheld starts and how games are accessed, but it does not turn the device into a locked-down Xbox console.

Microsoft says the handheld experience reduces background activity and defers non-essential tasks so more resources can be devoted to games. Microsoft has also described smoother frame pacing and more consistent performance when power efficiency matters.

Those claims should not be read as a guaranteed FPS or battery-life increase on every ROG Ally. Actual results depend on the APU, driver and firmware versions, power mode, resolution, thermals, and the game itself. A lighter gaming shell is not the same as a universal game-performance upgrade.

What it still cannot do like an Xbox console
Xbox mode improves the front end, but Windows PC gaming still has Windows PC trade-offs:
- Multiple launchers and accounts may remain necessary.
- Not every game has perfect controller support.
- Some titles need desktop interaction or manual setup.
- Anti-cheat and launcher behavior can vary by game.
- Cloud gaming and Remote Play depend on network quality and service availability.
- Advanced ASUS settings may still be easier to reach through Armoury Crate SE.
- A library entry does not mean a game is a native Xbox console title or an Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement.
Should you buy a ROG Xbox Ally?
Buy newer hardware for hardware reasons, not merely to obtain the interface. Existing ROG Ally owners should first update their device and check whether Xbox mode is available.
The ROG Xbox Ally (2025) is the more direct choice for buyers who want an officially designed Xbox-style handheld while retaining Windows access. ASUS’s U.S. page lists a captured price of $599.99, but that is a dated manufacturer-store price and should not be treated as permanent.
The ROG Xbox Ally X is aimed at buyers prioritizing higher-end hardware, including the specifications Microsoft describes as 1 TB storage, 24 GB RAM, an 80 Wh battery, and impulse triggers. The research does not establish a current verified U.S. price for that model.

Choose based on the improvements you actually need—performance, battery, controls, display, or storage. If the goal is only a more console-like launcher, an update may be enough.
Bottom line
Microsoft’s Xbox Full-Screen Experience is now a real option for Windows 11 handheld gaming and is increasingly branded as Xbox mode. It can make a ROG Ally easier to use with a controller, consolidate access to games from multiple PC ecosystems, and reduce the need to interact with the Windows desktop for routine gaming.
It does not replace Windows 11, Armoury Crate SE, Steam, or other launchers, and Microsoft has not made every ROG Ally configuration identical. Update Windows, the Xbox app, Game Bar, and Armoury Crate SE first; then judge the feature on the specific handheld and build you own.
