Sony officially announced God of War Laufey as the next mainline entry in the God of War series. The reveal, published by Santa Monica Studio on June 2, 2026, identifies Faye (Laufey) as the protagonist. Sony’s announcement describes a single-player, story-driven action-adventure.

The title is a new game, but it is not a new franchise. Sony’s announcement calls it the next mainline God of War entry. That distinction resolves the uncertainty behind the earlier headline: the project was still unrevealed when the phrase “not a new IP but it might feel like one” was attributed to journalist Jason Schreier in a 2025 ResetEra post, as reported by HotHardware. Why might it feel different from earlier God of War games?
Faye replaces Kratos as the lead
Rather than following Kratos as the playable lead, Laufey centers on Faye. Sony’s premise begins after her funeral: she awakens in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, and faces danger to her family. That change in protagonist and starting point gives the game a different focus while keeping it within the same series.

A new setting, with familiar series elements
Sony describes intimate, brutal combat and exploration, combining movement associated with the Greek-era games with Norse-era world-building and character connections. The announced framing points to a blend of recognizable series ingredients and a new perspective; it does not establish specific unannounced mechanics.
A standalone story
PlayStation says players can enjoy God of War Laufey on its own. The official God of War franchise page says God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök provide context that can help players fully appreciate the new game’s world and characters, but they are not prerequisites.

When and where can you play God of War Laufey?
The current PlayStation game listing names PS5 as the platform and February 16, 2027 as the launch date. Those are the details on the official listing; check it again closer to release for any changes. The game is not currently available to play based on that future launch listing.

No. Sony describes God of War Laufey as playable standalone. If you want more background on the world and characters, God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök are optional context rather than required preparation. PlayStation lists Ragnarök for PS5 on its game page, but there is no need to play it before starting Laufey.
