The fastest way to start Satisfactory is to automate a small, reliable production loop before chasing the next HUB milestone. Mine or hand-gather iron, copper, and limestone; smelt ore into ingots; turn ingots into basic parts with Constructors; move every item with belts; and power the machines with Biomass Burners. Add splitters, mergers, storage, and power poles only as the flow requires. Once the line runs steadily, move from temporary biomass to coal, build on foundations, and expand in dedicated production blocks. Start with a compact bootstrap line near the HUB, but leave enough room to extend it or dismantle it later. The goal is dependable output, not a permanent megafactory on the first day.

- Complete the early HUB upgrades. Use the HUB as your immediate progression checklist while collecting the materials each upgrade requests.
- Choose one nearby resource for each basic material. An accessible iron source, copper source, and limestone source are more valuable than a remote, theoretically perfect site while you are learning the flow system.
- Place a Miner where continuous extraction is possible. If you have not unlocked or positioned a Miner yet, hand-mine enough material to start the first Smelter and Constructor loop.
- Smelt before you construct. Feed ore to Smelters, then send ingots to Constructors that make the parts required by the current HUB milestone.
- Connect belts and power poles before adding more machines. A machine without an input belt, output route, or available electricity is not automation; it is a stalled building occupying floor space.
- Add a small storage container at the output. It gives the line somewhere to put finished parts and makes it obvious whether production is continuous, intermittent, or blocked.
Do not fill every available tile. A few meters of empty space around each building lets you add a second machine, route a belt around the first, or insert a splitter without rebuilding the entire line. Temporary lines are useful when they reveal consumption rates; they become liabilities only when you treat them as final layouts.
What do the conveyor-belt marks mean?
A belt pulls items from a connected output and pushes them into a compatible input as long as the destination can accept them. The belt’s mark sets its maximum throughput, measured in items per minute. The slowest segment in a route determines the practical capacity of that route.

These throughput figures are recorded by the Satisfactory Wiki community in 2026. They are maximum belt capacities, not a promise that a machine will produce at that rate. A line can carry 480 items per minute only when its source, every connection, and its destinations can collectively sustain that flow.
How do I choose the right belt for a production line?
Choose a belt by comparing the source’s output with the total input demand of the machines downstream, then inspect the slowest existing segment. If the source can produce more than the belt can carry, the belt is the bottleneck; if the belt is fast enough but machines still wait, the shortage is elsewhere.
Calculate demand before placing buildings
Count every consumer attached to the route. One machine that needs 30 items per minute and a second machine that needs another 30 can fill a Mk.1 belt’s 60-item-per-minute limit. Adding a third identical consumer requires a higher-mark belt, a second source, or a different distribution plan. Keep the units consistent: compare items per minute with items per minute rather than judging a line by how full it looks.
Find hidden slow segments
Upgrading only the final few meters does not fix a slower segment near the Miner or a Conveyor Lift. Trace the route from source to destination and check every straight piece, turn, and vertical connection. The slowest mark sets the route’s practical ceiling even when every other piece is faster.
Upgrade for a reason
A faster belt has value when it removes a measured bottleneck or creates room for an additional consumer. It has little value when the input is already intermittent or the receiving machines cannot consume the material. Use the saved construction materials for power, storage, or the next production block when the belt is not limiting output.

How do Splitters and Mergers balance a factory?
A Splitter divides one incoming flow among multiple outputs; a Merger combines multiple inputs into one output. They do not create material or increase a source’s capacity, so balancing still depends on compatible belt speeds and the actual input rates of the machines.
Use a Splitter to distribute one source
Place the Splitter on the incoming belt and connect one output to each consumer. If all consumers request the same rate and the source can supply the total, the flow will settle into an even pattern over time. If one consumer is slower or its output belt is blocked, that branch accepts less and the other branches can receive more.
Use a Merger to combine outputs
Connect separate machine outputs to a Merger when they feed a shared storage container or a downstream building. The outgoing belt must be able to carry the combined flow. For example, two inputs that together exceed a Mk.1 belt’s 60 items per minute will back up unless the merged route uses a faster belt or the sources are throttled by their consumers.
Prefer visible, maintainable balancing
Put a short storage buffer after a Splitter when you need to see whether a branch is receiving material. Leave enough space to walk around the junction and to replace a belt. A neat arrangement is not automatically balanced; a balanced arrangement is one whose source rate, branch demand, and belt capacities agree.
How do I build the first Miner-to-Constructor line?
Build the first line as a straight sequence so you can see each transition: extraction, smelting, construction, and storage. The following procedure works for iron, copper, and concrete-oriented bootstrap production, with the exact recipes determined by your current unlocks.
- Place the Miner or collect the initial hand-mined input. Face the output toward the area where the Smelter will stand, leaving a clear corridor for the belt.
- Place one or more Smelters in a row. Keep their input sides aligned with the incoming belt and leave a gap behind the outputs for the next belt section.
- Run the input belt first. A connected belt makes the direction of travel visible and exposes a bad connection before more buildings hide it.
- Place Constructors after the Smelter outputs. Use one Constructor for a simple early recipe, or use a Splitter when one ingot stream must feed multiple Constructors.
- Install an output belt and storage container. The container is both a reserve and a diagnostic: it should gradually fill when production exceeds immediate use, not remain permanently empty or permanently jammed.
- Connect every building to the same power network. Use Power Poles to keep cables short, readable, and expandable. Confirm that the machines show normal operating indicators.
- Run the line long enough to observe it. Watch whether inputs arrive, outputs leave, and the storage level changes. Fix the first visible constraint before duplicating the line.
This arrangement is intentionally modest. A small line that supplies a HUB upgrade continuously is more useful than a large line that consumes all your biomass and still fails to deliver the required part.
Why is my factory starving or backing up?
A starving machine lacks usable input; a backed-up machine cannot unload its output. Both symptoms usually come from a mismatch between production rate, belt capacity, destination demand, or power availability.

When inputs are starving
- Check that the Miner or upstream machine is powered and producing.
- Trace the belt for a disconnected segment or an incompatible input.
- Compare the source output with the sum of the consumers’ input requirements.
- Look for a slower belt mark or Conveyor Lift in the route.
- Inspect a Splitter: one blocked branch can change how material reaches the others.
- Confirm that the receiving machine has room for the item and is not waiting on another ingredient.
When outputs are backing up
- Check the destination container or machine for a full inventory.
- Follow the output belt to its end; a disconnected or full endpoint stops upstream production.
- Use a Merger only when the outgoing belt can carry the combined input flow.
- Add storage as a visible buffer, not as a way to conceal a permanently blocked route.
- Confirm that a power shortage has not paused the downstream consumer.
When the line alternates between the two
Intermittent starvation and backup often indicate that the average rates are close but not equal. Let the line run long enough to reveal the pattern, then compare the source’s sustained output with the consumers’ combined demand. A small buffer can smooth short gaps, while a belt upgrade, another source, or fewer consumers is needed when the mismatch is persistent.
When should I switch from biomass to coal power?
Switch when manual refueling is becoming the limiting task and you can support Coal Generators with a dependable coal route and water supply. Biomass Burners are an early, temporary source; coal is a transition that requires a complete fuel-and-water system, not merely a generator placed beside a coal node.
Make biomass work as a temporary grid
Use Biomass Burners to power the first Miner, Smelter, Constructor, and logistics network. Keep their fuel stocked and watch the grid’s capacity and peak demand. If the total demand approaches the available capacity, add generation before adding another machine; otherwise a new building can interrupt every connected line.
Build the coal system in a deliberate order
- Choose the coal site and water access. Coal Generators need coal and Water Extractors; plan the route for both resources before placing the generators.
- Build the generators and water extractors. Leave room for belts, pipes or equivalent connections in your layout, and keep the fuel route accessible for inspection.
- Verify the indicator lights. A generator that lacks coal, lacks water, or is not connected to the intended grid is not contributing useful capacity.
- Connect the coal grid back to the base. Ensure the new power network actually reaches the Miners, production buildings, and logistics that were previously on biomass.
- Observe the graph and peak demand before expanding. Add machines only after the coal system runs steadily with spare capacity.
How much power does a coal setup provide?
The tutorial gives an example of eight generators at 75 MW each: 8 × 75 MW = 600 MW. That is the tutorial’s particular eight-generator calculation, not a universal capacity rule. Your usable headroom depends on how many generators are operating, whether they receive coal and water continuously, and what the connected factory demands at its peak.

Use foundations and alignment guides as soon as they are available, even if the first build is temporary. Straight lines make belt capacity and machine connections easier to inspect; foundations also make a later rebuild predictable instead of forcing you to correct every height and angle by eye.
Separate production from logistics
Keep miners and raw-material intake at the edge of a production area, then move ingots or other processed inputs inward. Elevated belts and Conveyor Lifts can cross over machines and reserve floor space for additional Constructors. A dedicated corridor for belts reduces accidental crossings and gives you a clear path when a route needs an upgrade.
Leave expansion space
Plan at least one open side of a production block for another machine or a Splitter. Put storage where you can reach it without walking through moving belts. Place Power Poles along a route rather than clustering all cables at the first machine; a readable grid is easier to extend and diagnose.

Choose temporary or permanent construction consciously
A temporary bootstrap should optimize for short walking distance and low construction cost. A permanent block should optimize for belt throughput, machine input and output rates, unlocked technology, power demand, room for expansion, and a clean connection to future production. Moving a temporary line later is normal; designing a temporary line so tightly that no belt or pole can be removed is avoidable.
What should I unlock and automate next?
Follow the game’s progression in layers: stabilize basic parts, unlock the tools that improve layout and material flow, then build the power and logistics capacity needed for larger deliveries.
- Finish the current HUB upgrades while automating their basic requirements. This establishes the first reliable iron, copper, and concrete products.
- Use storage, Splitters, Mergers, and Power Poles to make the flow visible. These are not luxuries; they expose where a line is waiting or blocked.
- Unlock foundations and steel. Move longer belts onto an organized platform and begin separating production areas from transport routes.
- Prepare Space Elevator parts. Treat each delivery as a production project with its own input, output, storage, and power checks rather than hand-crafting every component.
- Use MAM research and the AWESOME Shop as they become available. These unlocks can change your construction and exploration options, so incorporate them into the next layout instead of rebuilding every line immediately.
- Replace biomass with coal when the fuel and water system is ready. Expand only after checking generation capacity, peak demand, fuel delivery, water delivery, and machine indicators.
Which factory layout is best for a beginner?
There is no single best layout. Compare a design by the job it must perform, not by appearance: throughput, machine rates, unlock tier, construction cost, power demand, walking distance, expansion room, and whether it is a bootstrap or a permanent production block.

Use the compact option when learning, foundations when repetition matters, and elevated or dedicated modules when a growing factory is constrained by crossings or floor space. The best choice can change as your unlock tier and power budget change.
How do I diagnose a factory before rebuilding it?
Diagnose from the source toward the final consumer and change one constraint at a time. Rebuilding several sections simultaneously hides the original failure and makes it difficult to know which change helped.

- Check the source. Confirm the Miner or upstream building is operating and that its output is not already blocked.
- Check every belt mark. Record the slowest segment, including vertical Conveyor Lifts.
- Check the junctions. Make sure Splitter outputs and Merger inputs are connected to the intended machines and that no branch ends at a full destination.
- Check machine demand. A source can be healthy while consumers starve if their combined requirements exceed the route’s capacity.
- Check the final destination. A full storage container or paused downstream machine sends the blockage backward through the entire chain.
- Run the line again. Observe whether the symptom disappears, moves, or remains. That result tells you whether the changed component was the actual bottleneck.
Keep a small reserve of common parts in storage while troubleshooting. It lets you replace a belt, pole, Splitter, or machine immediately instead of stopping the diagnosis to hand-craft every repair item.
What changed with Satisfactory version 1.0?
Satisfactory 1.0 released on 10 September 2024. Version 1.0 added a straight conveyor-belt build mode, and later patches have changed or clarified belt and unlock details. Because throughput and unlock information can change after major updates, check the current in-game description and the current Satisfactory Wiki entry when a number affects a large construction decision.
