To preserve PC game progress before reinstalling a potentially compromised game, first look for a save backup created before the suspected infection and stored away from the affected computer. If none exists, copy the identified save files while the game is closed—but treat that copy as potentially affected, not as clean. Address any Windows infection before reinstalling from a trusted source or restoring selected saves. A game reinstall by itself does not clean an infected Windows installation.
What should you do before copying or restoring a save?
Start by separating three different problems: a malicious or tampered game download, malware affecting Windows, and a save file that is merely corrupted. They call for different responses. A corrupted save does not by itself show that Windows is infected; a suspicious game installer does not establish that every save is malicious; and a malware scan does not certify a save as safe to restore.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you suspect the PC is infected, do not launch the suspect game to make it sync or create another save. Microsoft recommends a full scan when infection is suspected, describes an offline scan for persistent threats, and advises considering a clean Windows installation if infection continues. A game-only reinstall is not a substitute for addressing a potentially infected operating system.
Before doing anything that could overwrite data, check for a version made before the suspected compromise and stored outside the affected PC. That copy has the clearest timing and storage provenance, though it may lack recent progress. If no such backup exists, a separate copy of the current saves may preserve options for recovery, but it should remain separate from the clean system until you decide what to restore.

Microsoft Support warns that “Backups that are on your PC during an infection might have already been modified by the malware.” In other words, a folder called “Backup” is not automatically trustworthy: when and where it was made matter. A copy that predates the suspected compromise and was kept away from the affected computer is a stronger candidate than a copy made on that computer afterward, but even that is not a guarantee that every file is intact.
Keep the goal narrow: preserve identifiable save data, resolve the computer’s security problem, then choose what to restore. Do not attempt to preserve every file in a suspect game directory for convenience. The installer, game executable, scripts, mods, and unknown files are not substitutes for save data and should not be brought back as if they were progress files.
Where are PC game saves stored?
There is no universal save folder: the location and file format depend on the game, launcher, and sometimes account. The developer’s instructions for the specific game are the best starting point. Common Windows locations are candidates to check, not proof that a particular game uses them.
DocumentsorDocumentsMy GamesSaved Games%APPDATA%%LOCALAPPDATA%AppDataLocalLow
Launcher-managed copies can be elsewhere. Epic lists a local launcher save area under %LOCALAPPDATA%EpicGamesLauncherSavedSaves, followed by account and game folders. Steam documents local cloud files within its installation’s userdata[steamID][appID] directory. These locations may contain launcher-managed data rather than a complete, directly restorable set of a game’s saves. If the developer’s instructions and likely locations do not turn up the save, Epic advises contacting the game’s developer.
Record the game title, launcher, account or profile, original folder path, and date of the copy. Those details help distinguish the right profile and location later; they do not establish that the copied files are clean.
When checking a candidate folder, compare its context with the game’s documentation rather than relying on a familiar-looking filename. Different games can save data in different places, and a launcher-managed folder is not necessarily the only location involved. A title may have local data in one place and synchronized cloud files elsewhere. Without the game’s name and its instructions, there is no reliable universal extension, directory, or file-placement rule to give.

If you cannot confidently identify a file as save data, leave it in place and seek the developer’s instructions. Preserving an unchanged original and recording its path gives you a better chance of retracing your steps than renaming or moving files during the initial copy.

How do you make a separate copy without triggering a sync?
With the game closed, copy only save data you can identify into a clearly labeled folder. Do not launch the suspect game to prompt a cloud sync, and do not treat the entire suspect game directory as a save backup.
- Close the game. Avoid opening it simply to check the latest progress or force synchronization.
- Identify the likely save folder. Use the developer’s instructions first, then check the Windows and launcher locations above as appropriate for that game.
- Copy, rather than move, the identified files. Keep the original set unchanged. Label the copy with the game, account or profile, original path, and copy date.
- Keep the copy apart from the suspect installation. An external USB drive is one possible destination. Disconnect it after copying, and scan removable media before reusing it on a clean system. A drive preserves a copy; it does not sanitize it.
- Keep uncertain files out. Do not restore executables, installers, scripts, mods, or unidentified files from the suspect game folder as though they were saves. This is a cautious boundary, not a claim that every such file is malicious.
Windows File History can use external or network storage, but a game’s save folder may not be included by default if it sits outside the standard libraries. Check whether the specific folder is included rather than assuming File History captured it. File History can restore files to a different location, which lets you inspect a recovered copy without immediately overwriting the original destination.
If you use an external USB backup drive for PC game saves, treat it as a destination for a separate copy—not as a security product. Disconnecting it after the copy reduces its continued exposure to the affected PC, but it does not make potentially affected files clean. Microsoft advises scanning removable media before use. Do not reconnect a backup drive to a computer you still suspect is infected merely to check whether the files look right.
Make the copy useful for later decisions. Alongside the files, keep a simple note with the game, platform or launcher, account/profile, source folder, copy date, and whether you believe the copy predates the suspected incident. These labels are practical recordkeeping, not a vendor requirement or a safety certification. If you later have several versions, this information helps distinguish a current local copy from an older off-PC one without relying on memory.
File History is worth checking only if it was set up to protect the relevant folder. A save under a location outside its default libraries may not be covered unless you explicitly included it. Its ability to restore to a different location is useful for avoiding an immediate overwrite: recover a version separately, compare it with the other candidate copies, and only then decide whether to place it in the game’s active save folder.
Can you rely on a cloud save?
Only after checking how cloud saves work for that particular game and launcher. Cloud availability, the files selected for synchronization, and conflict behavior vary by title; a cloud icon or a launcher account alone does not prove that the current save is complete or predates the suspected compromise.
Cloud storage can be another version to evaluate, but it should not be treated as a clean-room backup by default. Check whether the title supports cloud saves, what is synchronized, and whether the version’s date makes sense for your situation. If the launcher is asking which copy to keep, do not dismiss the prompt or accept an option automatically. First preserve a separate copy of any local version you might want, because synchronization can replace one version with another.

Steam
Steam Cloud support is game-dependent. The game’s Steam store page indicates whether it supports the feature, while developers select which files are synchronized. Steam lets users control cloud synchronization per game or globally. If a sync has failed, Steam warns that starting the game anyway can create conflicts and lost progress. Before choosing a version in a conflict, make a separate copy of any local version you want to preserve.
Do not confuse Steam Cloud with a Steam game-installation backup. Steam says backups for Valve-created games do not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files. An installation backup may help reinstall game content, but it should not be assumed to contain the progress you need. Steam also says its support team may not be able to recover lost saves, so keeping a separate version before a conflict or file replacement matters.
Epic Games Store
Epic’s store-page Features tags indicate whether a game supports cloud saves. When a conflict asks which file to keep, choosing the older version can lose progress that cannot be recovered. Preserve a separate copy of the preferred local version before resolving the prompt. Launcher instructions can differ between legacy and preview experiences, so do not assume a menu path from one applies to the other.
Epic’s support guidance phrases two useful questions directly: “Where can I find my local game saves?” and “How do I handle Cloud Save conflicts in the Epic Games Launcher?” Use the current guidance for the launcher experience you have rather than relying on a remembered menu path. A title’s store-page support indicator and the actual conflict prompt are more relevant than assuming every Epic game handles saves identically.

GOG GALAXY automatic saves work only when implemented for the game. For supported titles, the developer specifies a local directory that syncs when the game launches or closes. That behavior does not establish that a copy is complete, independent of the affected PC, or from before a suspected compromise.
A platform cloud version and a backup stored off the affected PC are different recovery options. Compare their dates, independence from the computer, account and game compatibility, and completeness before choosing. A current local copy may contain more recent progress but needs particular caution; an older off-PC copy may have better provenance but omit later play. None of these checks is a safety certification of a save.
For any platform, the practical question is not simply “Is cloud enabled?” Ask whether this particular game supports it, which files the developer chose to sync, which account is active, and what the prompt says will happen to each version. A sync can preserve a useful copy, but it can also replace the version you hoped to keep. If you are unsure, stop before accepting the conflict and keep the local candidate separate.

How do you reinstall the game and restore progress?
First address the suspected Windows compromise. Then reinstall the game through its legitimate platform or the developer’s trusted source, confirm the right account and profile, and restore only the save version you have selected. The exact filenames, folder placement, and account-binding behavior vary by game, so follow that game’s instructions rather than guessing.
Recommended Free Tools
- Respond to the PC risk. Use Windows security guidance for scanning and system recovery. Microsoft documents a full scan, an offline scan for persistent threats, and consideration of a clean Windows installation if infection persists. Do not treat uninstalling and reinstalling only the game as malware remediation.
- Install from a trusted source. Once the system has been addressed, obtain a fresh game installation through its legitimate platform or developer. Do not reuse the suspect installer or restore an executable from the old game folder.
- Confirm the clean game’s save location and account. Check the developer’s instructions and make sure the game is using the intended account or profile. If the clean installation creates a new save, preserve that file separately before changing anything.
- Choose a save copy deliberately. Prefer a suitable pre-infection backup stored away from the affected computer when one exists. If you have only the current copy, treat it as potentially affected and restore only the identified save data you have chosen to keep.
- Place the selected files as the game’s instructions specify. Do not overwrite a newly created save until you have preserved it. Keep your separate copy unchanged in case the restored files are rejected or the wrong profile was selected.
- Check the result before syncing. Confirm that the game recognizes the expected progress. If the launcher presents a cloud conflict, compare the available versions and dates, and keep a separate copy of the version you prefer before accepting an overwrite.
Restoring is not the same as copying everything back. Start with the save version you chose and only the data the developer identifies as needed. Keep the untouched preservation copy elsewhere while testing. If the game does not recognize the progress, stop rather than repeatedly swapping files or accepting sync choices; verify the account, the documented path, and the specific game’s restore instructions first.
After the game recognizes the expected progress, handle any cloud prompt deliberately. The cloud version could be older, newer, or simply a different set of synchronized files. Keep a copy of the preferred local version before allowing an overwrite, and do not assume that a successful launch proves that every slot, setting, or piece of local data was restored.
What can go wrong during recovery?
- The save is not in a likely Windows folder. Locations vary by title. Check the developer’s guidance and launcher-specific locations; if the save is still missing, Epic advises contacting the developer.
- The launcher reports a conflict. Do not accept a choice automatically. Epic warns that selecting an older conflict file can lose unrecoverable progress, and Steam warns that starting after a failed sync can cause conflicts and lost progress. Preserve the local version you want to keep before choosing.
- The game starts with no progress. Check that the correct profile and account are active and that the selected files went into the documented location. File placement and account binding are title-specific, so a plausible folder alone is not confirmation.
- The Windows infection may persist. Stop the save-restoration process and continue with Windows security guidance. Microsoft recommends considering a clean Windows installation if infection persists; reinstalling the game alone does not resolve that condition.
- You have a Steam game-installation backup, not a save backup. Steam says backups for Valve-created games do not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files. Do not assume an installation backup contains progress.
- The only available copy was made on the suspect PC. It may preserve progress that is not elsewhere, but do not mistake its existence for proof that it is unaffected. Keep it separate and make your decision after addressing the PC risk.
- A drive or cloud account is mistaken for a clean copy. Storage location alone cannot establish file integrity or timing. Record where and when a version was made, and avoid claims that scanning or syncing proves that a save is safe.
- A newly created save is overwritten. A fresh installation may create its own file. Preserve that version separately before placing another save in the active location, so you can reverse the change if the game rejects the restored files or you selected the wrong profile.
How should you choose between a cloud version and a manual copy?
Use the version that best matches the desired progress while accounting for when and where it was created. A pre-infection copy stored away from the affected PC has the strongest provenance of these options, but could be older. A current manual copy can preserve newer progress but came from the computer in question. A cloud copy may be useful, but its date, selected files, and conflict behavior still matter.
| Option | Potential advantage | Important check | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-infection backup stored off the affected PC | Its timing and separation from the computer may make it the strongest starting point. | Confirm the backup date, game, account or profile, and whether the save slots and settings you need are present. | It may omit progress made after the backup. |
| Current manual copy | May preserve progress newer than any available older backup. | Confirm that the files are actual saves and record their original location and copy date. | It came from the affected PC and should not be treated as clean. |
| Platform cloud version | May provide another version without relying only on the local folder. | Check that the game supports cloud saves, which files it syncs, and the version shown in any conflict. | Synchronization or a conflict choice can overwrite progress; cloud presence does not establish a pre-infection date. |
There is no universal winner. If the older off-PC version is clearly from before the suspected problem, it may be the cautious first candidate, but it could leave out more recent play. If the current manual copy is the only version with recent progress, preserving it separately keeps that option open, while its origin means it deserves particular caution. A cloud version should be assessed by its timing and conflict details rather than by the word “cloud” alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before making the final choice, compare the versions against a short checklist: Which one predates the suspected incident? Was it stored independently of the affected PC? Does it match the intended game, launcher, and account? Are the save slots and settings you need present? Could a sync prompt overwrite another candidate? These comparisons help with recovery decisions, but they do not certify any save as safe.
Before you begin: a recovery checklist
- Do not launch the suspect game just to generate a save or force a sync.
- Look first for an off-PC copy made before the suspected compromise.
- Find the game’s documented save location; treat common Windows folders as leads, not guarantees.
- Copy identified save data without moving or altering the original, and record its path and date.
- Keep uncertain files and the suspect game’s executable, installer, scripts, and mods out of the save backup.
- Check cloud support and conflict behavior for the specific title; preserve a local candidate before choosing.
- Address the Windows security concern before installing the game again or restoring files.
- Use the intended account and documented location, preserve any new save first, then verify progress before syncing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Steam support recover a lost game save?
Steam says its support team may not be able to recover lost saves. That is why it is worth keeping a separate copy of a local version before resolving a conflict or replacing files.

Will a Steam game backup include my saves?
Not necessarily. Steam specifically says backups for Valve-created games omit saved games, custom multiplayer maps, and configuration files; an installation backup should not be treated as a save backup.
Can I move a PC game save to another computer or account?
Sometimes, but the exact answer depends on the game’s save format and account-binding behavior. The available guidance does not establish a universal transfer method, so check the developer’s instructions for that title before replacing files or switching profiles.
Where can I find my local game saves?
Start with the developer’s instructions for the specific game, then check likely Windows folders such as Documents, Saved Games, %APPDATA%, and %LOCALAPPDATA%. Epic lists a launcher-local location under %LOCALAPPDATA%EpicGamesLauncherSavedSaves followed by account and game folders; Steam documents local cloud files under its userdata[steamID][appID] path. These are candidates, not universal save paths.
How do I handle a cloud-save conflict?
Do not choose automatically. Preserve a separate copy of any local version you want, then compare the versions and dates and follow the current instructions for your launcher and game. Epic warns that selecting an older conflict file can lose unrecoverable progress; Steam warns that starting after a failed sync can create conflicts and lost progress.
Can I launch the game once to force a cloud sync before reinstalling?
Avoid launching a suspect game to force synchronization. Steam warns that starting after a failed sync can create conflicts and lost progress, and a sync does not establish that the version is complete or predates a suspected compromise.
Does reinstalling the game remove malware from Windows?
No. A game-only reinstall is not a remedy for an infected Windows installation. Follow Windows security guidance; Microsoft recommends a full scan when infection is suspected, documents an offline scan for persistent threats, and advises considering a clean Windows installation if infection persists.
Does scanning a save file prove it is safe?
No. A scan can be part of responding to a suspected PC infection, but it does not certify a save as safe to restore. Prefer a suitable pre-infection backup kept away from the affected PC when available, and treat a current copy from the affected computer cautiously.
Can File History restore my game saves?
It may, if the relevant save folder was included. File History can use external or network storage, but a game-save folder outside its default libraries may need explicit inclusion. It can restore to a different location, which avoids immediately overwriting the active files.
The Bottom Line
Find the specific game’s save location, preserve a separate copy without launching the suspect game, and compare its date and origin with any cloud or off-PC version. Address the Windows security risk before reinstalling from a trusted source. Restore only selected, identified save data, preserve any new files first, and resolve cloud conflicts deliberately. No scan, sync, or game reinstall guarantees that a save is safe or recoverable.
