schedprov.dll is a genuine Windows system file. If schedprov.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is the Task Scheduler WMIv2 Provider, part of Windows Management Instrumentation and Task Scheduler infrastructure. Its normal location is:

Microsoft documents Task Scheduler as a Windows component, while WMI providers are implemented by provider DLLs hosted by WMI. This is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or ordinary third-party runtime file.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
An incomplete update can leave the component store or protected system files in an inconsistent state.

- Open Start and select Settings.
- Open Windows Update. On some Windows 10 installations, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Test the program that reported the error.
If the error remains, continue with the repair commands below. Do not skip DISM because the missing file itself may be a symptom of damage in the Windows component store.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the most appropriate first-line repair for a missing or damaged schedprov.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and System File Checker uses that repaired source to replace protected files.
Microsoft’s system-file repair guidance recommends running DISM before SFC.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is running.
- After DISM completes, run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC says it found no integrity violations but the error continues, that does not prove the application is healthy. Check the exact path in the error, the application’s architecture, and the application installation as described below.
Running these commands manually means waiting through the scans and interpreting which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows DISM and SFC remain the authoritative repair path.
If DISM cannot find repair files
Microsoft says DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If Windows Update cannot supply them, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual Windows folder in your repair source. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, build, and architecture. Microsoft describes this process in its repair-a-Windows-image documentation.
Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from a random site for a matching repair source.
Fix 3: Check the file and its Microsoft signature
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
After DISM and SFC complete, check whether Windows has the expected file.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
text
%windir%System32wbem
- Press Enter.
- Look for
schedprov.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
The expected native location on 64-bit Windows is normally System32wbem. Windows uses file-system redirection for 32-bit components, so a 32-bit process may see the WOW64 view rather than the native 64-bit view. Microsoft explains this distinction in its file-system redirector documentation.
A file in an application directory, Downloads, or another unexpected folder is not automatically trustworthy. A matching filename or file size is not proof that the file is genuine.
There is no single correct version for every Windows release. The seed version 6.2.9200.16384 is associated with Windows 8-era files, while Microsoft has documented later versions for Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2. The correct copy must match the installed Windows build and architecture.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If the file disappeared after a cleanup, security scan, or malware-removal event, Windows Security may have quarantined it.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
schedprov.dllor theSystem32wbemfolder. - Open a detection to view its details.
Microsoft explains Protection History in its Windows Security guidance. Restore a quarantined file only when its origin, detection details, and Microsoft digital signature have been checked and the detection is demonstrably a false positive.

Do not broadly disable antivirus protection or create a permanent exclusion just to make the error disappear. If the file is repeatedly removed, investigate malware and security logs before attempting restoration.
Fix 5: Repair the application that reports the error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
An application can mention a Windows DLL even though the DLL belongs to Windows. Programs call Windows APIs, WMI namespaces, and Task Scheduler interfaces; an application may fail when one of those operating-system dependencies is unavailable.
First determine whether the problem is Windows-wide or application-specific:

- Test another program that uses Windows normally.
- Open Task Scheduler by searching for it from Start.
- If multiple Windows tools fail or show WMI-related errors, continue repairing Windows.
- If only one program fails, repair that program from its publisher.
For a desktop application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- If neither option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application using its official installer.
For a game, open its launcher and use its Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or equivalent option. This replaces damaged private files without treating schedprov.dll as a game runtime. If only one game fails while Windows repairs cleanly, reinstalling or verifying that game is the definitive fix.

Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began after a cleanup utility, driver installation, failed update, software installation, or other recent system change.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point and open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs without normally changing personal files. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
If no suitable restore point exists, or restoration fails, continue with a Windows repair installation.

Time needed: 45 minutes to several hours
Repeated DISM or SFC failures can indicate storage damage or a damaged Windows installation.
- Back up important files.
- Check whether Windows reports drive errors or unusual disk behavior.
- Run DISM and SFC again after addressing any storage problem.
- If repairs still fail, use matching Windows installation media for a repair installation.
- Choose the option that keeps personal files and applications when it is offered.
- Follow the installer’s instructions and restart when prompted.
A repair installation is safer than copying a DLL from another computer because it restores Windows components as a compatible set.
Do not use regsvr32 as the first fix
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Microsoft documents it as a utility for DLLs that expose registration functionality. Running:
regsvr32 schedprov.dll
does not restore a missing file, repair the component store, or guarantee correct WMI provider registration. WMI providers can also depend on provider configuration and system infrastructure, so registering an arbitrary copy is not equivalent to servicing Windows.
Use DISM and SFC instead. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s intended purpose.

Updating drivers is rarely the direct fix
A driver update is relevant only when the error began after a device, storage, or system-driver problem. Do not assume a driver utility can replace a Windows WMI provider.
If a driver is clearly involved:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Manually checking many devices can make it difficult to identify which change mattered. Outbyte Driver Updater can show outdated drivers with its free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace Windows component repair.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading schedprov.dll from a DLL website can introduce:
- Malware disguised as a system file
- The wrong Windows build
- A 32-bit file where a 64-bit component is expected
- An incompatible file from another release
- A copy that Windows servicing later replaces
- A file that does not include the related WMI configuration or component-store repair
Never copy a downloaded DLL into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or the WMI directory as a standard fix. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a matching repair source, System Restore, or an official application installer.

FAQ
Is schedprov.dll malware?
The legitimate schedprov.dll is a Microsoft Windows system DLL for the Task Scheduler WMIv2 Provider. A copy in an unexpected directory, a failed digital signature, or repeated antivirus detections requires investigation.
Is schedprov.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Installing those runtimes is not the standard repair. Install them only if the error also identifies a separate missing dependency required by the application.
What if SFC reports no corruption?
Check whether the file exists at %windir%System32wbemschedprov.dll, inspect its Microsoft signature, and determine whether the failing executable is 32-bit or 64-bit. Then repair the application, inspect Event Viewer, and check whether the error names a different path or dependency.
Should I copy the file from another Windows computer?
No. Windows builds, servicing state, architecture, and related provider registration may differ. Use DISM with a matching repair source or perform a Windows repair installation.
