Most “secret” YouTube links are not hacks. They are ordinary video IDs combined with the right host and query parameter: t= for a watch-page link, start= for an embedded player, list= to retain playlist context, and YouTube’s current Share at Timestamp control for phones. These forms can open a long video at an exact second, request captions, autoplay an embed, load a privacy-enhanced player, or fetch a thumbnail. They do not bypass age gates, private-video permissions, or other access controls.
This guide shows the URL syntax that works today, where each form works, what fails on Shorts, and how to recover when an app or browser strips the parameter.

What are the useful “secret” YouTube URL tricks?
The useful tricks are ways to express the same video ID for different destinations. A watch page, a youtu.be share link, a playlist URL, an iframe, and a Shorts page all identify video content differently, so the parameter that controls playback is not interchangeable everywhere.

These are documented URL patterns, not methods for defeating YouTube’s policies. A private video still requires permission, and an age-restricted upload may refuse third-party playback.

How do I make a YouTube link start at a specific time?
Convert the desired position to seconds and add t= to a normal watch URL or to a youtu.be URL. For example, 1 minute 30 seconds is 90 seconds.
- Find the video ID, the value after
v=in a watch URL or the path afteryoutu.be/. - Convert the target time: minutes × 60 + seconds. Thus 1:30 becomes
90. - For a watch URL that already contains
?v=, append&t=90:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&t=90. - For a short share URL with no query string, append
?t=90:https://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID?t=90.
The separator matters. A URL can have one question mark starting its query string; every additional parameter begins with an ampersand. Writing ?v=VIDEO_ID?t=90 creates a malformed query and commonly leaves the timestamp unused.
Can I write minutes and seconds instead of seconds?
YouTube’s share controls may display a human-readable time, but the portable query form is safest when expressed in seconds. Convert 1 hour 2 minutes 5 seconds to 3725 and use t=3725. Keeping the value numeric also makes it easier to paste into scripts, QR codes, and chat applications.
What if the URL already has other parameters?
Keep the existing parameters and append &t=. For example, a link that includes a playlist remains https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&list=PLAYLIST_ID&t=90. Do not remove the video ID while trying to add the timestamp; the timestamp has to be associated with the selected video.
What is the difference between t= and start=?
t= is intended for links that open YouTube’s watch page or a youtu.be redirect. start= belongs in an iframe embed URL. Putting the wrong parameter on the wrong surface can cause the player to begin at zero.

Embed-only options can be added to the same iframe query string. For example, https://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID?start=90&autoplay=1 requests a start position and autoplay. A regular-link t= value should not be assumed to work when copied into an /embed/ URL.

How do I share an exact moment from my phone?
Use YouTube’s current Share at Timestamp control when it appears in the mobile app or mobile site. A TeamYouTube announcement dated April 16, 2026 said the control was expanding to mobile and becoming the primary way to share a specific moment.
- Open the long-form video and move the playhead to the moment you want.
- Tap Share, then choose Share at Timestamp.
- Confirm the displayed time and copy the generated link into your message or app.
The 2026 rollout also changed the sharing workflow: end-time and custom-description controls are no longer part of that timestamp-sharing flow. If the control is absent in a particular app build, pause at the target time, copy the regular share link, and add the appropriate t= parameter manually.
On desktop, the share dialog may expose a “Start at” checkbox. The resulting link follows the same query-parameter idea; inspect the URL before editing it so you know whether to append ?t= or &t=.
How do I keep a timestamped link inside a playlist?
Leave both the selected video’s v=VIDEO_ID and the playlist’s list=PLAYLIST_ID in the URL, then append &t=SECONDS. Use https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&list=PLAYLIST_ID&t=90 when the recipient should retain playlist navigation.

If the playlist contains a different copy of the same upload, or the recipient lacks access to an unlisted playlist, YouTube may open a different context or fall back to the standalone video.
Can I timestamp a YouTube Short?
Not with the /shorts/VIDEO_ID URL form. The documented Shorts timestamp feature is unavailable, and current technical guidance says a timestamp parameter on a Shorts URL is ignored, so the Short starts at its beginning.

If the same upload also has a standard watch-page representation, use that watch URL instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&t=90. This is a different destination from https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID, and it may not be available for every Short. Do not promise a deep link when the only public form is the Shorts page.
YouTube’s product-timestamp documentation is a separate feature. It applies to long-form videos, supports 15–60-second product windows, and allows up to 60 tagged products; those limits describe shopping-product markers, not ordinary viewer links created with t=.

Use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced embed host. In the iframe URL, replace www.youtube.com with www.youtube-nocookie.com, while keeping /embed/VIDEO_ID and your player parameters.

Why might a privacy-enhanced embed still fail?
- No referring page: load the iframe from your site rather than pasting the embed URL directly into the address bar.
- Age restriction: age-restricted videos generally cannot be watched in most third-party embeds and may redirect viewers to YouTube.
- Owner restrictions: the uploader may have disabled embedding, regardless of which host you use.
- Browser policy: autoplay, sound, and storage rules are controlled by the browser as well as the URL.
Which player parameters can I add to an embed?
Player parameters belong in the query string after /embed/VIDEO_ID. Add each additional option with &.

These parameters request behavior; they do not override the viewer’s browser settings, the uploader’s restrictions, or YouTube’s availability rules. For a privacy-enhanced version, combine them with the alternate host, for example https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/VIDEO_ID?start=90&cc_load_policy=1.

How can I get a YouTube thumbnail from only the video ID?
Insert the video ID into YouTube’s image host path: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. This is useful for a game guide, forum post, or custom link preview when you already know the ID.
maxresdefault.jpg is best effort. Older or low-resolution uploads may not have that file, so try https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/hqdefault.jpg as a fallback. A missing high-resolution image does not mean the video is unavailable; it only means that particular thumbnail rendition was not generated.
Does the old #t= fragment syntax still work?
YouTube announced deep linking in 2008 using a fragment such as #t=1m15s, and times written in comments could become clickable. Treat that syntax as historical context rather than the default modern recipe.
Query parameters generated by the current share controls are more predictable across watch pages, short links, and mobile apps. Fragment handling can differ by surface, redirect, or player implementation, so use t= or the Share at Timestamp control when you need a link that other people can open reliably.

What should I check when a timestamp link opens at the beginning?
- Check the separator. A URL that already has
?v=needs&t=, not a second question mark. - Check the destination. A watch page uses
t=; an iframe usesstart=. - Check for Shorts. The
/shorts/form does not provide a documented timestamp deep link. - Check the app’s handling. Some chat clients rewrite, preview, or strip query parameters. Paste the complete URL in a browser to test it.
- Check access. A private, age-restricted, deleted, or embedding-disabled video can redirect or fail independently of the timestamp.
If a mobile app keeps stripping the parameter, use YouTube’s Share at Timestamp control, then verify the copied URL before sending it. For an embedded page, inspect the final iframe source and confirm that start= remains in the query string.
What these tricks cannot do
A URL parameter is not an authorization token. It cannot unlock a private or members-only upload, remove an age restriction, force an owner-disabled embed, or grant access to a hidden playlist. It also cannot guarantee autoplay: browsers commonly require muted playback or a user gesture.

Use the smallest URL that fits the job. A watch link with t= is usually the most portable choice for people; an iframe with start= and player options is appropriate only when you control the surrounding webpage. Keeping the host, parameter, and video ID matched is the difference between a reliable “secret” and a link that simply starts at zero.

Can I put a timestamped YouTube link in a QR code?
Yes. Encode the complete watch or youtu.be URL, including its t= value, in the QR code. Test the printed code with both a phone camera and the YouTube app because QR readers may hand the link to different handlers.
Why does a timestamp disappear when I paste the link into a chat app?
Some services sanitize query strings, replace links with previews, or copy only the canonical video address. Send the URL as plain text, compare the pasted address with the original, and use Share at Timestamp if the service keeps removing t=.
Can I use a timestamp link in a YouTube comment?
A timestamp can be written as a time such as 1:30 in a comment, and YouTube has historically made recognized times clickable. Comment recognition is controlled by YouTube’s interface, so it is separate from the URL syntax you send outside YouTube.
Does a timestamped link work if the uploader replaces the video file?
