Completing the check is necessary, but it may not be enough: your age group, the recipient’s age group, privacy settings, parental controls, region, and the specific experience can all affect whether a message goes through.
Roblox’s communication rules and interface are still changing, so the labels below may differ slightly by account, device, region, or product. The following reflects Roblox’s documented system as of September 2026.

What Roblox’s new DM rule actually means
Roblox has not removed private messaging altogether. Instead, it has made age checking a prerequisite for its standard communication features. Roblox began rolling out age checks for chat in late 2025 and announced a broader rollout in January 2026, where chat was available. The stated goal is to place users into age-based communication groups and reduce unrestricted conversations between adults and younger users. Roblox explains the policy in its newsroom.

- Direct chat inside an experience: commonly started with the

- Developer-created messaging: custom systems inside particular experiences, which may follow separate rules.
Turning on one type of chat does not automatically enable the others.

The four requirements for Roblox DMs
- You must complete Roblox’s age check. Phone or email verification is not a substitute for the current requirement.
- Your age group must be compatible with the recipient’s. Being friends on Roblox does not guarantee that you can message each other.
- The relevant communication setting must be enabled. Direct chat, Friends chat, and Experience chat may have separate controls.
- Parental permission may be required. Roblox’s current general guidance says users under 16 need parental consent for Direct chat. Other age-specific rules apply to Experience chat and younger accounts.
Region, moderation restrictions, platform privacy controls, and the settings of a particular experience can add further limitations. See Roblox’s current chat guidance for the latest account-level requirements.
Roblox age groups and communication access

| 9–12 | May communicate with users in similar age groups or with Trusted Friends, subject to parental permission and safety filters. |
| 13–15 | Can generally communicate with similar-age users and Trusted Friends, but parental controls still apply. Direct chat requires parental consent under Roblox’s current general guidance. |
| 16–17 | Has broader communication access with similar-age users and Trusted Friends, while remaining subject to Roblox’s settings and rules. |
| 18+ | Has the broadest access, but age compatibility, settings, moderation, and regional availability still apply. |
These are broad categories, not a promise that every feature will be available to every account. Roblox says age groups and feature access can vary by region and product, including Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, and the standard Roblox experience. Its age-check documentation is the best reference for an account-specific result.
Under 9
Completing an age check does not give a child under 9 unrestricted DMs. Roblox’s friends-chat guidance says users in this group cannot normally send direct messages or chat with friends outside games. A parent may be able to enable limited, moderated in-game communication where the feature is available.

Ages 9–12
Children in this group may be able to chat with similar-age users or Trusted Friends. Parental permission, safety filters, and age compatibility remain important. A child may therefore be able to chat with one friend but not another.
Ages 13–15
Teenagers generally receive broader access, but an age check is still required and a linked parent can manage communication controls. Roblox’s current general chat page says users under 16 need parental consent for Direct chat.

Ages 16 and older
Older teens and adults usually have broader access, but that does not mean they can freely contact younger users. Roblox’s age-based design restricts many cross-age conversations, with Trusted Friends and other approved relationships providing limited exceptions.
How to complete the Roblox age check
- Sign in to the correct Roblox account.
- Open Settings. On desktop, select the gear icon in the upper-right. On mobile, select More (…) → Settings.
- Open Account info.
- Under Age Group, select Continue with selfie for facial age estimation, or Continue with ID if you are eligible.
- Follow the prompts using the account holder’s own information. Do not use another person’s document.
- After the check finishes, review the communication settings and any parental approval request.
Roblox lists two principal methods:
- Facial age estimation: uses a selfie-style image or video process. Roblox says the process is handled through Persona, that the image and video are deleted after processing, and that Roblox does not receive or store biometric data. Those are Roblox’s stated data-handling practices, not an independent audit finding. Read Roblox’s explanation of age estimation.
- Government ID verification: available to users aged 13 or older with an eligible government-issued document. It can help correct an incorrect facial estimate, but it requires the account holder’s own ID.
If facial estimation cannot determine your age or detects a discrepancy, Roblox may request another check or ID verification. Roblox says customer support cannot manually verify IDs or directly remove existing verifications.
Where to enable chat and Direct chat
For your own account, open:
Settings → Privacy & content restrictions → Communication
For a child account managed by a linked parent, open:
Settings → Parental Controls → Settings You Manage → Communication

Depending on the feature and interface rollout, you may see labels such as Experience chat, Direct chat, Friends chat, Game chat, or Party. Roblox has been renaming or rolling out the Party tab as Chat in some regions, so both names can refer to the same general conversation area.
Enabling Experience chat will not necessarily enable Friends or Direct chat. If the option is missing or locked, the account may still need an age check, parental approval, or a compatible age-group assignment.
How to send a message after access is restored
Friends or Party/Chat messages
On mobile or tablet, open the Chat tab, select an existing conversation, or use the + button to start one. On desktop, use the Chat area or Chat tab shown by your account. Choose an eligible recipient, type in the message field, and send it.
If your account still shows a Party tab instead of Chat, that may simply reflect Roblox’s interface rollout rather than a different messaging system.
Direct chat inside an experience
In a supported experience, Roblox documents the /w command for direct chat. The command will work only when the experience supports standard Experience Chat, both users are eligible, and the relevant communication settings allow the conversation. A developer-created messaging feature may use a different interface and may not be controlled by Roblox’s standard chat setting.

Why Roblox DMs can still fail after an age check
Use this order to identify the blocker:
- Check both accounts. Both the sender and recipient may need completed age checks.
- Check age compatibility. A completed check does not make every age pairing permissible.
- Check each setting separately. Review Direct chat, Friends chat, and Experience chat rather than assuming one switch controls everything.
- Ask the linked parent to inspect Parental Controls. A parent can restrict communication even when the child’s account appears age-checked.
- Test another recipient. If messaging fails with only one person, age compatibility, that user’s settings, or a block may be responsible.
- Test inside and outside a game. Try the Chat area outside an experience and
/winside a supported experience. Failure in one location does not prove that all chat is disabled. - Check the experience. Developers can disable standard Experience Chat for a particular game.
- Restart and update. Sign out, sign back in, and install the current Roblox app version.
- Check device or console controls. Xbox, Windows, console, or device-level privacy settings can interfere even when Roblox’s own settings appear correct.
- Contact Roblox Support. Do this if the account has been incorrectly age-classified, is stuck after a check, or shows an account-level restriction you cannot explain.
If the age-check option is missing
First confirm that you are signed into the intended profile and that the account’s birthday places it in an eligible group. Then check whether the feature is supported in your region, whether Roblox is waiting for parental approval, and whether an earlier age check is still processing. Roblox may also request a repeat check when it detects a discrepancy between the account information and the estimated age.
Do not create a second account or change the birthday simply to make the option appear. False information can create further account and safety problems.
Trusted Friends is not a universal DM bypass
Trusted Friends is Roblox’s controlled mechanism for allowing some age-checked users aged 13 and older to communicate more freely with people they know, including across certain age groups. It does not override the age-check requirement or guarantee that any adult can message any child.
Both users must meet Roblox’s eligibility rules, and younger users may need parental involvement. Roblox describes the feature and its rollout in its Trusted Friends announcement.

Roblox says communications are subject to its moderation and safety systems. That does not mean users should assume that no automated system or human reviewer can access or act on content. Review the Roblox Terms of Use and the platform’s own privacy explanations before completing an age check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to upload government ID to send Roblox DMs?
No. Roblox offers facial age estimation, while government ID verification is an alternative generally available to users aged 13 and older. You still need to complete the required age check and meet the other communication conditions.
Does phone verification unlock Roblox DMs?
No. Phone or email verification should not be treated as a substitute for Roblox’s current age-check requirement.
Can adults freely DM children on Roblox?
No. Age-checked accounts are still subject to age compatibility and Roblox’s communication rules. Trusted Friends provides only a controlled exception for eligible users; it is not unrestricted adult-to-child messaging.
Can I bypass the Roblox age-check requirement?
No legitimate bypass exists. Do not use a false birthday, another person’s ID, a VPN, or a paid unlock service; these can create security and moderation risks.
