The right architecture depends on how much the sites must share. Use a WordPress Multisite network when one team needs a coordinated codebase and administration. Use independent installations when sites require separate owners, plugin sets, release schedules, or failure boundaries; give each its own database when isolation matters most. In every design, DNS and virtual-host routing, protected filesystem identities, measured PHP capacity, database controls, caching, and tested backups matter more than a headline site count.

Choose the operating model before choosing the server
Hosting several WordPress sites on one machine is not a single product decision. It is a choice about shared code, shared administration, failure boundaries, and how much operational work your team can absorb. WordPress documents three practical patterns.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWordPress Multisite network
A Multisite network uses one WordPress installation and one database to manage multiple sites. Core files, themes, and plugins are shared across the network. Each site still has its own content tables and media-upload directory, while the user table is shared. That arrangement is efficient for related sites that need coordinated updates, common governance, and a central administration experience.
The shared codebase is also the defining risk. A faulty plugin update, incompatible theme change, or compromised administrator can affect the network rather than one site. Multisite therefore suits organizations that intentionally accept common maintenance and a common trust boundary. It is less suitable when independent site owners must control their own releases or when one site must remain available while another is being changed.

Independent installations with one shared database
Each site has its own WordPress files and configuration, but the installations use one database server or database with unique table prefixes. This preserves separate code and configuration while reducing database administration overhead. A mistake in database permissions, maintenance, or backup handling can still affect several sites, so the failure boundary is wider than with separate databases.
Independent installations with separate databases
Each installation has its own files, configuration, database, and database credentials. This provides the strongest separation of the three patterns: a schema error, credential exposure, or restore operation can be limited to one site. The trade-off is more provisioning, patching, monitoring, credential rotation, and backup work. For unrelated customers, different teams, or sites with different compliance and recovery requirements, that additional administration is usually justified.

Routing has two independent parts: DNS tells visitors where a hostname resolves, and the web server decides which WordPress document root handles that hostname. Both must be configured; changing only one produces broken sites, certificate errors, or a default site appearing for the wrong domain.
Domain-based routing
For separate domains, create a virtual host (or server block) for every hostname in NGINX or Apache. Point each domain’s DNS records to the server’s address, then map the hostname to the intended document root. Terminate TLS at the edge and include every required hostname in the certificate configuration. Keep each site’s upload and configuration paths aligned with the virtual-host definition so a request cannot fall through to another site’s files.
A domain-based Multisite network can use mapped domains or wildcard subdomains, depending on the network design. Wildcard subdomains require DNS and web-server support for arbitrary subdomains. Independent installations generally use explicit virtual hosts because each domain has its own root, logs, and deployment lifecycle.
Path-based routing
A path-based network keeps one hostname and places sites below paths such as example.com/subsite. It avoids managing many hostnames, but URL structure becomes part of the network design. Permalink rules, redirects, cookies, and later migrations must preserve the subdirectory relationship. A path-based layout is most natural when sites are sections of one organization rather than unrelated domains.

Routing checklist
- Create DNS records for every hostname and allow time for DNS changes to propagate.
- Define a matching virtual host or server block and select the correct document root.
- Configure TLS for every domain or subdomain that serves WordPress.
- Set the WordPress site URL and home URL to the intended scheme and hostname.
- Test the primary domain, redirects, login URL, media files, and a deliberately unknown hostname to ensure it cannot reach the wrong site.
Build the server as layers
A layered design makes responsibilities visible and lets you tune one bottleneck without changing every site.
Edge and web server
Use NGINX or Apache to terminate TLS, route hostnames, serve static files, and pass dynamic requests to PHP. Keep a separate access and error log per site where practical. Site-specific logs make it possible to identify a bad plugin or traffic spike without guessing which domain generated the load.
Set explicit upload limits, request timeouts, and directory rules at this layer. Do not expose configuration files, backups, or deployment artifacts through the document root. Apply security headers and redirect HTTP to HTTPS consistently, while allowing health checks and certificate renewal paths that your operations process requires.
PHP layer
Run a PHP version supported by the current WordPress release and by the plugins each site actually uses. PHP workers should be sized from measured traffic, request duration, memory consumption, and plugin workload. A site that performs expensive imports or report generation can exhaust workers even when page views are modest, while a heavily cached publishing site may need far fewer workers than its traffic suggests.
Use per-site pools when the hosting model requires stronger isolation. Separate pools allow different memory limits, restart behavior, and operating-system identities. They also make it easier to identify which site is consuming workers. A shared pool is simpler, but one site’s long-running requests can delay requests for all others.
Database layer
Separate databases and database users when tenant isolation, independent restores, or a narrow failure boundary is important. Grant each credential only the permissions its installation needs, and keep credentials outside publicly served files. A shared database reduces administrative overhead, but a mistaken migration, dropped table, or over-broad account can enlarge the blast radius.

Regardless of the layout, monitor slow queries, connection usage, disk growth, and backup completion. Database capacity is affected by query patterns and plugins, not merely by the number of WordPress directories.
Filesystem and identity
Run sites as non-privileged users. Where possible, give each independent site its own operating-system user and PHP process identity, with ownership limited to that site’s files. Permit writes only to directories that need them, normally uploads and carefully controlled cache or update paths. Keep configuration files, private keys, database dumps, and deployment scripts outside the public document root or protected by explicit web-server rules.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Shared ownership is convenient for automated deployments but weakens isolation. If one process can write another site’s plugins or configuration, a compromise in the first site can become a compromise in the rest.
Reverse-proxy and page caching
Place a reverse proxy such as NGINX or Varnish in front of PHP for cacheable pages. WordPress performance guidance notes that a reverse proxy can serve cached output without reaching PHP or the database, reducing repeated work. Exclude administrator screens, logged-in sessions, checkout or other personalized responses from full-page caching. Purge or version cached content when a site publishes, changes menus, or updates assets.
Caching does not remove the need for PHP and database capacity. Cache misses, authenticated requests, administration, search, and uncached API traffic still consume application resources. Configure cache keys with the hostname so one domain can never receive another domain’s response.
Plan capacity from workload, not a site-count promise
There is no honest universal answer to how many WordPress sites one VPS can handle. WordPress documentation does not publish a formula that converts CPU, memory, or storage into a guaranteed site count. Ten lightly visited brochure sites and ten busy stores with intensive plugins are entirely different workloads.

Estimate capacity from observations collected on the actual server or a representative staging environment:
- Requests per second and the percentage served from cache.
- PHP worker utilization, queue time, request duration, and memory per worker.
- Database CPU, connection count, slow-query rate, and storage latency.
- Disk space consumed by media, backups, logs, and temporary files.
- Traffic bursts, scheduled jobs, imports, image processing, and search activity.
- Headroom required for updates, backups, failover, and an unexpected traffic surge.
Set alerts before resources are exhausted. A server that runs normally at peak traffic but has no room for a backup or security update is already overcommitted. Capacity planning should include the recovery workload: restoring a large database, rebuilding caches, and serving visitors while a site is degraded.
Make isolation a deliberate security control
Isolation is not only a database choice. It includes WordPress administrators, operating-system users, PHP pools, file permissions, credentials, logs, and backup access. Give each team only the access required for its sites. Keep shared network administration limited to trusted operators, and review administrator accounts regularly because Multisite shares the user table across sites.
Apply updates in a controlled sequence. On a Multisite network, test a core, theme, or plugin update against every site that shares it. With independent installations, each site can follow its own release schedule, but that freedom requires a register of supported PHP versions, plugin compatibility, and end-of-life dates.

Protect the control plane as well as the public pages: restrict database administration interfaces, secure SSH keys, rotate credentials, and collect authentication and web-server logs centrally. Monitoring should identify repeated login failures, unexpected file changes, worker exhaustion, and storage growth.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Back up for the way you will restore
Before enabling Multisite or changing server settings, back up both files and databases. A usable backup includes WordPress core files as deployed, themes, plugins, uploads, configuration, and the relevant database data. Store copies separately from the server and verify that the backup job completed rather than assuming a scheduled command succeeded.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Test restores on a staging system. For independent installations, restore one site’s files and database without overwriting its neighbors. For a Multisite network, test whether you can recover a single site’s content and media as well as the entire network; shared code and the user table can make selective recovery more involved. Document the order of operations, DNS changes, cache purges, and credential updates required for a rollback.
Choose a recovery point and recovery time objective for each site. A site that can tolerate a day’s lost content may need a different schedule from one that publishes continuously. Keep retention long enough to cover delayed discovery of corruption, and monitor backup storage so retention does not silently consume the production volume.
A practical deployment workflow
- Classify the sites. Record ownership, domain names, plugin requirements, release schedules, traffic patterns, and recovery expectations. Group only sites that genuinely share a trust and maintenance model.
- Select the architecture. Choose Multisite for coordinated sites; choose independent installs for separate owners or release cycles; choose separate databases when isolation or per-site restores outweigh additional administration.
- Prepare identities and directories. Create non-privileged users, dedicated document roots, PHP pools where required, protected configuration paths, and per-site log locations.
- Provision databases and credentials. Use unique table prefixes for independent installs sharing a database, or separate databases and users for stronger boundaries. Record credentials in a protected secret store.
- Configure routing and TLS. Point DNS to the server, define virtual hosts or the path-based network, install certificates, and verify that each hostname reaches only its intended site.
- Install and stage. Deploy WordPress, themes, and plugins in staging first. Exercise logins, media uploads, permalinks, scheduled tasks, forms, and any site-specific integrations.
- Enable caching and observability. Add reverse-proxy rules with hostname-aware cache keys, exclude personalized pages, and activate metrics, logs, uptime checks, and resource alerts.
- Back up and rehearse rollback. Take a pre-launch backup, perform a restore test, write the rollback steps, and only then switch production DNS or enable the network.
Architecture comparison
| Decision axis | Multisite network | Independent installs, shared database | Independent installs, separate databases |
|---|---|---|---|
| Code and administration | One WordPress codebase and network administration | Separate files and configuration for each site | Separate files and configuration for each site |
| Isolation and blast radius | Shared core, plugins, themes, and user table create a broad boundary | Separate code, but database mistakes can affect several sites | Strongest database and credential separation |
| Upgrade schedules | Coordinated across sites using shared components | Independent per installation | Independent per installation |
| Database administration | One network database | Lower overhead through a shared database with unique prefixes | More databases, users, backups, and maintenance |
| Routing | Domain-based or path-based network | Virtual host per domain | Virtual host per domain |
| Backup and restore granularity | Network-wide recovery is straightforward; single-site recovery needs planning around shared data | Per-site files and tables can be separated, but shared database operations widen risk | Per-site backup and restore boundaries are clearest |
| Operational cost | Lowest when sites are closely related and centrally managed | Moderate, balancing separate deployments with shared database work | Highest because isolation adds provisioning and maintenance |
Troubleshoot by layer
The wrong site appears for a domain
Check DNS resolution first, then compare the requested hostname with the web server’s virtual-host match and document root. Confirm that the TLS certificate and HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect preserve the hostname. Finally, verify the WordPress home and site URLs. A default virtual host catching unmatched requests is a common cause.
All sites slow down together
Inspect PHP worker queues, database connections, CPU, memory, and disk latency. If cached pages remain fast while uncached pages queue, PHP or the database is the likely constraint. Review scheduled jobs and recent plugin changes before simply adding more workers; excessive workers can exhaust memory and worsen the outage.
Only one site is failing
Use that site’s access and PHP logs, compare its plugin and theme changes, and check its database health and disk quota. Separate PHP pools, users, and databases make this diagnosis faster because the failing resource is already scoped.
A cache serves stale or private content
Inspect the cache key and bypass rules. The hostname must be part of the key, and administrator, logged-in, and other personalized responses must bypass full-page caching. Purge the affected site’s cache after publishing or changing routing rules.

Choose Multisite when the sites are related, centrally administered, and willing to share core, plugin, theme, and user-management decisions. Choose independent installations when release timing, ownership, plugin combinations, or failure boundaries differ. Within the independent model, use separate databases and credentials when a tenant must be isolated, restored, or audited without involving its neighbors.
Whichever model you choose, implement DNS and web-server routing together, run each site with the least privilege practical, size PHP and database resources from measurements, cache only responses that are safe to share, and prove that backups can be restored. Those controls determine whether one server remains a manageable platform or becomes a single point of failure for every site.
