What happens if you kill Shadowheart’s parents? It depends on who makes the decision. When an anti-Shar Shadowheart chooses to end Arnell and Emmeline Hallowleaf’s suffering, their spirits pass to Selûne as moonmotes and Shadowheart is freed from Shar’s painful bond, but she mourns her family. A Dark Justiciar Shadowheart can instead sacrifice them as Shar’s final test; Shar removes her memories of them again and Shadowheart moves toward leading the cloister. If the party kills the parents without Shadowheart present, or kills them later at camp after rescuing them, she becomes angry and leaves permanently. Those outcomes are not interchangeable: her agency and allegiance determine the result.
What are the possible outcomes for Shadowheart’s parents?
The confrontation with Arnell and Emmeline Hallowleaf concludes Shadowheart’s Act Three companion quest, Daughter of Darkness, in the Chamber of Loss beneath the House of Grief. There are four materially different outcomes. The same two characters die in three of them, but Shadowheart’s response, her relationship with Shar, and your party’s future are different in each case.

The important distinction is not simply “parents dead” versus “parents alive.” It is whether Shadowheart made the choice, whether she is serving Shar, and whether the party acted without her consent.
How do you reach the Chamber of Loss?

These are in-game guide conditions, not statistics about player success. Once inside, the conversation and Shadowheart’s allegiance determine the meaningful branch.
What happens when an anti-Shar Shadowheart chooses to end their suffering?
On the Selûnite, anti-Shar route, Shadowheart can decide that her parents’ torment must end. Arnell and Emmeline die, but their spirits become moonmotes entrusted to Selûne rather than remaining trapped in Shar’s punishment. Shadowheart is released from the painful bond that has shaped her life.

Because she made the decision herself, she does not leave the party. Her story continues along the anti-Shar path, and the epilogue describes her as an adventurer. The result is therefore a deliberate narrative trade-off: the curse-like bond is broken, but the price is permanent bereavement.
How can Shadowheart save her parents instead?
Shadowheart can reject the sacrifice and save Arnell and Emmeline. They remain alive, recover at camp, and later reassure their daughter. On the anti-Shar route, the epilogue can show the reunited family living together in a cottage.

Saving them has a different cost. The painful connection to Shar remains, so “save” does not mean every consequence of the curse disappears. It preserves Shadowheart’s living family while leaving her tied to the force she has been resisting.
The documented Selûnite dialogue includes a DC 20 Religion or Persuasion check. There is also a way to make her choice more reliable without persuasion: reach at least 50 approval, secure at least two of three Act Three memories, and have the city-smells conversation before defeating Viconia. The three memories are found at Allister Marnley’s gravestone, graffiti near the Baldur’s Gate waypoint, and the Night Orchid cave in the cloister.
Those thresholds are conditional game-guide details. They are not a guarantee for every modified save or every game version, so check that the conversation and memories have actually occurred before assuming “let Shadowheart choose” will produce the rescue.
What if a Dark Justiciar Shadowheart sacrifices them?
A Shadowheart who has become a Dark Justiciar can kill her parents as Shar’s final test. This is a separate branch from the anti-Shar decision to end their suffering.
Shar removes Shadowheart’s memories of Arnell and Emmeline again. The result is not grief over remembered parents but another enforced erasure tied to her service. Shadowheart then moves toward the leadership path within the cloister. Sharran followers can become allies during the final battle, and the epilogue’s Mother Superior outcome belongs to this Shar-aligned branch.

The distinction matters because “the curse is broken” is not a universal description of the death scene. Memory removal is documented specifically for the Dark Justiciar sacrifice. In the anti-Shar ending, Shadowheart remembers her parents and mourns them; in the unauthorized-killing ending, she remembers enough to condemn the party and leave.
What happens if you kill the parents without Shadowheart?
If the party kills Arnell and Emmeline while Shadowheart is absent from the House of Grief, the game treats it as a unilateral killing rather than as her chosen resolution. She becomes angry and leaves the party permanently.
The same consequence applies if you rescue the parents and later kill them at camp. Their survival does not give the player permission to remove them afterward. Shadowheart’s departure is the direct companion consequence, not a variant of the anti-Shar or Dark Justiciar endings.
The quest-journal wording reproduced in the Daughter of Darkness documentation is explicit: “Shadowheart’s parents were killed. Deciding she could no longer trust us, Shadowheart left for good.” That entry belongs to the unapproved-killing outcome. It should not be used as a blanket description of every branch in which the parents die.

The epilogue extends those outcomes. The bereaved, anti-Shar Shadowheart is described as an adventurer; the rescued-family version can share a cottage with her parents. The Shar-aligned Mother Superior branch is separate and should not be blended with either Selûnite result.
Romance, origin-character status, and other endgame decisions can change surrounding epilogue presentation. Treat the branch descriptions above as the documented outcome of the family decision, not a promise that every character’s final montage will use identical lines.
Should you kill or save Shadowheart’s parents?
There is no single mechanically best answer. Choose based on the story you want for Shadowheart.
- Choose her anti-Shar death decision if freedom from Shar and a remembered, mourned family loss fit her arc.
- Save them if keeping her parents alive and seeing a later family reunion matters more than ending the painful bond immediately.
- Follow the Dark Justiciar path if you are deliberately playing Shadowheart as Shar’s servant and want the cloister-leadership and Sharran-ally consequences.
- Never kill them unilaterally if you want Shadowheart to remain in the party. Her anger and permanent departure are the specific penalty for taking the choice away from her.
The decision is a narrative trade-off among living family, freedom from Shar, allegiance, and companion agency. The game does not present the parents’ deaths as one uniform ending.

- If you want the rescue dialogue, check the DC 20 Religion or Persuasion option, or the documented 50-plus approval, two-of-three-memories, and pre-Viconia conversation conditions.
- Keep Shadowheart present for the decision. Killing the parents while she is absent, including a later camp killing after rescue, triggers her permanent departure.
- Read the resulting camp scene and epilogue as consequences of the chosen branch, not as interchangeable scenes for every playthrough.
