What kind of game is Shinobi: Art of Vengeance?
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is a single-player 2D action platformer built around fast melee combat, precision movement and exploration. Its campaign contains more than a dozen stages, and each level mixes arena fights with platforming, checkpoints, hidden portals and occasional blind jumps. SEGA’s description emphasizes overcoming obstacles and defeating foes with a broad range of combos; the practical lesson is that you should constantly switch between attacking, repositioning and checking the environment for another route.

The original release arrived on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Steam on August 29, 2025, according to SEGA Corporation. Nintendo’s official store lists a Nintendo Switch 2 edition released September 24, 2026. A GamesRadar+ review estimates the story at approximately ten hours; that is a review estimate rather than a publisher specification, and searching for portals, tools and alternate paths can make a playthrough longer.
Combat fundamentals: how to control a fight
Open with light attacks
Light attacks are the safest way to begin most encounters. They come out quickly, let you establish where Joe is standing and give you time to read an enemy’s response. Start close enough to connect, then use a dash roll or an air movement option before several opponents can surround you. Do not stand still waiting for a perfect combo: a short sequence followed by a reposition is usually safer than committing to a long animation in the middle of a crowd.

Add heavy attacks to accelerate executions
Heavy attacks do more than increase damage. The official manual states that “Execution Gauges fill up quicker with Kunai and Heavy Attacks.” Use a light string to get into range, then insert heavy attacks when an opening appears. Heavy moves are slower, so use them after an enemy whiffs, during a stagger or from a position where a dash can cancel your exposure. Kunai also contributes to the gauge, making ranged pokes useful when closing distance would be dangerous.
Keep a route out of the crowd
Dash rolls let Joe pass under or away from threats and also travel over ground obstacles. In the air, the same movement becomes an air dash. Combine short attacks with ground dashes, jumps and air dashes so enemies have to turn before they can attack again. If a group pushes you toward a wall, jump through the formation rather than trying to defeat every target where you first met them. The goal is to keep the fight in a space where you can see incoming attacks and still reach a platform or wall.
Read the Execution Gauge and icon
Each vulnerable enemy has an Execution Gauge. Heavy attacks and Kunai fill it faster than ordinary light hits. When the gauge is full, the execution icon appears. Enter Ninja Stance, then press the Dash command to perform Shinobi Execution. This is an instant finish on the marked enemy, so it removes a threat without requiring a conventional damage sequence.

Use a single execution to stabilize a dangerous fight
If you are surrounded, low on health or facing an enemy whose next attack is difficult to read, execute as soon as the icon appears. Removing one opponent immediately can create the space needed to heal your position through movement and finish the rest normally. Execution is also useful against an enemy blocking a narrow platform or guarding the only safe landing.
Chain executions for additional loot
When several enemies are nearly marked, delay ordinary kills long enough to line up a safe chain. Executing marked targets in succession increases the reward, and post-encounter coverage reports health, Kunai ammunition and gold obtained from executions. The extra loot is the reason to attempt a chain, not a requirement for progression. Keep one escape route open and avoid weakening every enemy at once if doing so leaves you unable to survive a mistake.
Know when not to chase the bonus
Chaining is optional. If an enemy is about to hit you, a platform is collapsing or another foe is entering from off-screen, kill normally or execute the first available target. A missed chain costs only potential bonus loot; a failed escape can cost the entire encounter. Treat the chain as a reward for a fight you already control, not as a condition you must satisfy.

Ninpo and Ninjutsu use different resources
The names are similar, but Ninpo and Ninjutsu are separate systems with different triggers. Keeping them mentally separate prevents you from waiting for the wrong meter during a difficult room.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| System | Resource | How it is filled or spent | Best practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ninpo | Ninpo Cells | One cast costs one cell. Cells refill as you successfully attack enemies. | An earned offensive tool: build cells by staying active, then spend them when a group or a priority target gives you a clear opening. |
| Ninjutsu | Rage Gauge | The gauge fills when Joe takes damage or collects Rage Orbs. | A damage-triggered emergency option or a deliberate power spike when normal attacks are unsafe or too slow. |
How to manage Ninpo Cells
Ninpo is tied to successful offense. A cast consumes one Ninpo Cell, so avoid spending the last cell merely to shorten a fight you can already win with basic attacks. Continue landing reliable hits to refill cells, then use Ninpo when it can interrupt pressure, damage several targets or create a safe transition between positions. Because cells are earned through attacks, passive play does not replenish them; disengage only long enough to avoid damage, then resume controlled offense.
How to manage the Rage Gauge
Ninjutsu becomes available through a different loop: Joe gains Rage Gauge from taking damage or collecting Rage Orbs. That makes it especially valuable after a mistake or during a room that supplies orbs. Do not confuse a full Rage Gauge with a Ninpo Cell; filling one does not refill the other. If you are learning a new stage, keep Ninjutsu available for the moment an unfamiliar hazard or elite enemy threatens to overwhelm your normal spacing.
Choose the right resource under pressure
- Use Ninpo when your attacks are connecting and you want to convert that momentum into a stronger offensive sequence.
- Use Ninjutsu when damage has already filled Rage Gauge, when Rage Orbs are present, or when a dangerous situation demands a power spike.
- Use neither when a dash, jump or wall route solves the problem more safely and preserves both resources.
Movement: jump, cling, run and dash as one toolkit
Master the jump-to-wall timing
To wall-run, jump toward a wall and cling to it. Continue holding the relevant movement button as Joe lands against the surface so he runs upward instead of dropping away. Practice this timing in a safe section before relying on it over a hazard: the critical moment is maintaining the hold through contact and the landing transition, not simply touching the wall.
Use the full aerial sequence
Joe can jump, double jump, dash on the ground, air dash in mid-air and cling to walls. Double jump followed by an air dash is particularly useful around moving platforms, where the first jump gets you level with the platform and the second jump plus dash corrects your horizontal position. Do not spend the air dash immediately after leaving a ledge if you cannot yet see the landing; keep it for the final correction when possible.

Dash over obstacles and through danger
The base dash is a ground roll that passes over obstacles and helps you cross an enemy’s attack line. In the air it becomes an air dash, giving you a second way to change position after a jump. In unfamiliar rooms, first identify where the next solid surface is, then dash. Blindly dashing from a ledge is a common way to miss a platform or enter a hazard before you know its timing.

Ningi tools unlock routes that basic movement cannot
Ningi are progression rewards that expand both exploration and combat options. The manual names Ninja Hook, Ninja Claws and Glider as examples. These tools open hidden routes, bypass hazards and change how you should read a stage after returning to it.
Ninja Hook
Use the Ninja Hook when a route appears to require a long horizontal or vertical connection that jumps alone cannot provide. After obtaining it, revisit suspicious gaps and high ledges rather than assuming they are decorative. Hook routes can also let you approach a combat arena from a safer angle.
Ninja Claws
Ninja Claws provide access to surfaces and passages designed around the tool. When a wall or barrier looks deliberately placed but cannot be reached with the standard jump, double jump and dash sequence, mark the location on your map and return once Claws are available. Rechecking old stages is part of the intended progression, not wasted backtracking.
The Tool Desk

The Glider extends aerial travel and helps cross hazards where a normal air dash ends too soon. Use it to inspect side routes and to approach moving platforms with more control. Because gliding changes your descent, practice where the landing is wide before attempting a precision portal room.
Cannon Punch
PlayStation Blog describes Cannon Punch as a move unlockable in the demo that deals heavy damage to armor and can destroy Yokai Barriers. It therefore serves two jobs: breaking defenses in combat and opening routes that regular attacks cannot. If a heavily armored enemy seems impervious to ordinary hits, look for the Cannon Punch opportunity rather than spending all your resources on light attacks.
Exploration, maps and revisiting stages
SEGA describes more than a dozen stages that use Ninjutsu to solve platforming puzzles and uncover hidden routes. Nintendo highlights Amulets for enhanced abilities and Ningi tools for obstacles and alternate paths. Together, those descriptions point to a layered level design: the first visit teaches the main route, while later abilities reveal optional rooms, portals and shortcuts.

Use the map when progress stops
When a corridor, ledge or portal seems blocked, check the map before repeatedly forcing the same jump. The blockage may be a deliberate Ningi gate rather than a timing problem. Note the location, continue through the available path and return after the next tool unlock. This prevents wasted attempts and helps you distinguish an inaccessible route from a missed wall-run.
Inspect side passages after every new tool
After gaining Ninja Hook, Ninja Claws or Glider, revisit earlier stages and check high ledges, isolated platforms and barriers that looked ornamental. Hidden areas are often positioned just beyond a movement sequence you could not previously complete. The same habit applies after learning Cannon Punch: armored obstacles and Yokai Barriers may conceal an alternate path as well as a fight.
Handle moving platforms and blind jumps
The Lantern Festival section highlighted by PlayStation Blog emphasizes moving platforms, double jump and aerial dash. GamesRadar reports that stages also include occasional blind jumps. At an unfamiliar gap, slow down, observe the platform cycle and test the wall surface before committing. Make the first attempt a route-finding attempt, not a speed run; once you know where the landing is, repeat it with the dash held for the final correction.
Bonus portals and precision challenges
Bonus portal rooms are precision tests with hazards. Enter them after you are comfortable with jump, double jump, wall cling and air dash, rather than treating them as the place to learn basic movement. If a room keeps ending at the same obstacle, isolate that action in a safe area: practice the wall-run hold, the second-jump timing or the late air-dash correction separately, then return to the portal.
- Watch the entire hazard cycle before moving.
- Preserve the air dash until you can see the landing whenever the room allows it.
- Use wall cling to pause and reset your position instead of forcing a low-percentage jump.
- Leave and return later if a newly unlocked Ningi tool clearly changes the intended route.
Shop purchases, combat moves and Amulets
Buy moves that improve control before chasing damage
The shop sells combat moves that extend combo techniques. Early purchases should favor moves that keep Joe airborne, reposition him or raise Execution Gauge safely. A move that lets you continue a sequence while changing location is generally more useful for learning stages than a purely theoretical damage increase, because it helps you avoid being surrounded and creates more opportunities for heavy attacks or Kunai to fill a gauge.
Build around your risk tolerance
Amulets add ability customization. Choose survivability-oriented options while learning unfamiliar stages or execution timing; shift toward offensive bonuses once you can consistently control spacing and convert marked enemies into executions. The available sources do not establish a definitive best-build ranking, so no Amulet arrangement is universally optimal. Treat the system as a way to support your habits rather than a tier list you must copy.

What to spend coins on first
- Prioritize a shop move that extends a reliable combo or improves airborne control.
- Choose a repositioning option if you are often trapped in the middle of groups.
- Add a move that helps fill Execution Gauge safely when you can already avoid basic attacks.
- Use Amulets to cover your current weakness: survivability for learning, offensive bonuses for confident execution chains.
This order is a decision framework, not a mandatory build. If a particular move solves a stage obstacle or a recurring failure in your play, buy it earlier; the game does not publish a universal ranking that overrides your playstyle.
A practical first-playthrough routine
- Scout the room. Identify walls, platforms, hazards, exits and any side route before starting a fight.
- Establish position with light attacks. Attack the nearest threat, then dash away before a second enemy closes in.
- Accelerate one gauge. Use heavy attacks or Kunai on a safe opening to fill that enemy’s Execution Gauge.
- Separate resources. Track Ninpo Cells from successful attacks and Rage Gauge from damage or Rage Orbs; never wait for one while expecting the other.
- Execute deliberately. When the icon appears, enter Ninja Stance and press Dash. Chain only when the next target is already safe to reach.
- Recheck the route. After combat, inspect side passages and the map. Mark anything that needs a later Ningi tool.
- Spend between stages. Buy a control-oriented move, then select an Amulet that matches whether you are learning or optimizing.
Troubleshooting common failures
“My wall-run stops immediately.”
You may be releasing the movement input at the landing transition. Jump toward the wall, cling, and keep holding as Joe lands. Practice on a straight wall before trying the technique over a gap.
“I keep missing moving platforms.”
Do not spend every movement option at takeoff. Use the double jump to gain height, watch the platform’s position and reserve the air dash for the final horizontal adjustment. The Lantern Festival-style sections are designed around that sequence.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Normal attacks do nothing to this enemy.”
The target may be armored. Cannon Punch is specifically described as dealing heavy damage to armor; use it when available instead of exhausting Ninpo Cells on ineffective light strings.
“I cannot trigger an execution.”
Check that the enemy’s Execution Gauge is full and that the execution icon is visible. Then enter Ninja Stance before pressing Dash. If the icon is absent, continue landing attacks; heavy attacks and Kunai fill the gauge faster than light attacks.
“I am losing more health while chasing chains than I gain in loot.”
Stop chaining. Execute the first marked enemy or finish targets normally, keep a dash route open and return to chain attempts after you know the room. Additional loot is optional, while survival is required.
Which version should you buy?
The platform choice depends on where you want to play and whether you need the newer Nintendo edition. The release information currently established is:
| Platform group | Release date | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Steam | August 29, 2025 | SEGA announced the original multi-platform release on these systems. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | September 24, 2026 | Nintendo’s official store lists a Switch 2 edition on this date. |
Choose the edition that matches your available hardware, controller preference and desired storefront. “Shinobi Art of Vengeance Nintendo Switch 2” is the directly matching purchase phrase for Nintendo’s edition. No source here establishes performance differences, feature parity details or a universally superior platform, so those should not be assumed from the release dates alone.
How long is the campaign?
GamesRadar+ reports an approximately ten-hour story estimate. That figure describes a review estimate, not a guaranteed completion time or a publisher specification. Players who revisit stages for Ningi-gated routes, hidden portals, Amulets and bonus rooms should expect their personal playtime to vary. The game’s more-than-a-dozen stages provide the main structure; optional exploration and precision challenges determine how far beyond the story estimate you go.
