At the time of the latest listing snapshot, only 17% of 1,532 English-language reviews recommended it. The original Total War: SHOGUN 2 listing stood at 92% positive from more than 21,000 English reviews. That gap explains the backlash, but it does not prove every criticism—or the central allegation that generative AI was used on the art.
How bad is the Steam reaction?
Steam’s “Overwhelmingly Negative” label is calculated from user recommendations and can change as new reviews and patches arrive. The current Complete Edition snapshot is unusually poor: 17% positive from 1,532 English reviews in 2026. GamesRadar recorded an earlier snapshot of 19% positive from 677 reviews, while Windows Central later reported more than 1,850 total reviews and the same overall label. The contrast matters because the remaster is being judged against a version many players already regard as dependable. Players and reviewers describe worse performance than expected from a remaster, along with graphical problems and HDR behavior that can make the presentation look incorrect on compatible displays. No independently verified frame-rate benchmark, crash rate or hardware-by-hardware test was available, so the severity will vary with system configuration. Pathfinding and game AI
PC Gamer reported dreadful siege pathfinding, poor enemy and naval AI behavior, and an instance in which a general became stuck against a wall. These are not merely cosmetic defects: in a strategy game, units failing to reach positions or opponents behaving incorrectly can invalidate battles and campaigns.
Bugs and multiplayer
Windows Central described game-breaking bugs. PC Gamer also reported multiplayer desynchronization. A desync can end a cooperative or competitive session even when both players have otherwise stable connections, while a campaign-breaking bug can force a reload or abandonment of a save. The reports do not establish one universal bug affecting every copy.

Mods and compatibility
Review coverage points to missing or changed mod support. Long-running strategy communities often depend on extensive user-made fixes and total conversions, so a remaster that breaks established tools or load orders can be less useful than the older executable even when its graphics look newer.

Critics have interpreted visual details in the remastered art as signs of generative or AI upscaling, and reporting has noted that the Steam page did not contain an AI-use disclosure. Neither point confirms which tools, if any, were used, or whether AI touched the production assets at all. No publisher statement confirming generative-AI artwork was provided in the available reporting.

That distinction matters. A missing disclosure can fuel mistrust, especially when the art changes are paired with bugs and a higher cost, but it is not proof of a particular pipeline. Until SEGA or Creative Assembly publishes a clear account of the assets and tools, readers should treat “AI-upscaled” as an unverified claim rather than a settled description of the remaster.
Is the Complete Edition worse than the original?
There is no single answer for every player. The original has the stronger current review record, a longer period of bug fixes and established mod ecosystem. The Complete Edition adds features that some fans may value, but its reported launch problems undermine those benefits.

If your priority is a stable campaign, familiar mods and predictable multiplayer, the available evidence favors the original. If you specifically want the new factions, revised controls or Japanese voice track, the remaster offers additions—but currently asks you to accept substantial technical uncertainty.
What has the publisher said, and what happens to refunds?
A community reproduction of a SEGA and Creative Assembly update says the companies were working with platform holders to remove the Complete Edition from sale, reinstate the original listing, investigate reported issues and support refunds. Because that wording was not available as a directly verified corporate post in the reporting, check the official SEGA or Creative Assembly announcement and your store’s refund terms before relying on it. A store delisting, reinstatement or refund window can change the practical value of either edition.

Should you buy it now or wait?
Wait if reliability is your priority
- Hold off until a verified patch addresses the reported performance, HDR, pathfinding, AI, bug and desync problems.
- Wait for a clear statement about the art-production and AI-disclosure question.
- Confirm whether the original listing is available and whether your platform offers a refund route.
Consider it only for specific additions
- You place high value on the newly introduced minor factions.
- Modern unit controls or full Japanese voice acting are more important to you than mature mod compatibility.
- You accept that the present review label is a live launch snapshot and that a future patch could materially change it.
For most buyers, waiting is the defensible choice. The original’s 92% positive record provides a safer baseline, while the remaster’s improvements are currently outweighed by reported stability, AI, compatibility and disclosure concerns. Reassess after an official patch, a confirmed refund policy and a direct explanation of the artwork pipeline.
