If you’re deciding what to choose in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, first separate the two decisions: the opening menu asks whether to play Canon of Creation or Canon of Vengeance, not whether to choose Law or Chaos. Law and Chaos are alignment outcomes within Vengeance. Choose Creation for the original game’s story; choose Vengeance for its new revenge-centered narrative, then follow the outlook you prefer.
What the opening choice actually does
The opening campaign selection is between two story paths. SEGA describes Canon of Creation as the original story and Canon of Vengeance as a new tale of revenge by the fallen. Vengeance diverges from Creation midway and leads to a different ending.
| Choice | What you’ll play | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Canon of Creation | The original Shin Megami Tensei V story. | You want to experience or revisit the original storyline. |
| Canon of Vengeance | A new narrative centered on revenge by the fallen, which diverges from Creation midway and has a different ending. | You want the new story and its Law/Chaos alignment outcomes. |
So if your question is specifically whether to go Law or Chaos, you’re asking about the Vengeance story’s alignment—not which campaign to launch.
Law or Chaos: which outlook fits you?
Walkthrough guidance uses Law and Chaos as broad value orientations rather than objective moral rankings. GameFAQs characterizes Law around order, righteousness, and selflessness, and Chaos around free will and self-preservation. In Vengeance, guides associate Law with siding with Tao and Chaos with siding with Yoko.

- Go Law if the order-oriented outlook and Tao’s side appeal to you.
- Go Chaos if the freedom- and self-preservation-oriented outlook and Yoko’s side appeal to you.
Neither label establishes a universally “best” ending. The available official descriptions establish what the two campaigns are, but do not rank their endings or compare their length or difficulty.
How choices affect Vengeance’s alignment
Guides agree that choices across the Vengeance story matter to its Law and Chaos outcomes, but they do not describe the ending-selection mechanics consistently. Game8 says story and subquest choices, including preferences toward Tao or Yoko, affect alignment. GameFAQs offers alignment-oriented choice guidance. Ludo.guide, by contrast, says alignment does not determine the ending and describes a final choice.

Because those accounts conflict, don’t rely on an exact hidden-point threshold or assume there is one definitive moment when the route locks in. Make choices that reflect the outlook you want to follow, and consult a route guide if you’re trying to secure a specific result.

Guides distinguish the original route’s late-game selection among endings from Vengeance’s alignment-focused outcomes. That’s another reason not to treat “Law or Chaos” as an opening-menu campaign choice: first choose Creation or Vengeance, then consider the ending mechanics for that story path.
