Yes—help the mice. In Valor Mortis, the mice encounter is part of the Mummy and Daddy side quest in the City of Orphans sewers. Accept their request, take the Cheese, and leave the undead in the cell alone. Shooting those undead instantly fails the quest.
Where the mice quest begins
Enter City of Orphans > Sewers and locate the Lantern. On the opposite side, look for a burrow behind a ladder. Interact with that burrow to begin Mummy and Daddy and accept the mice’s request.

The first interaction gives William Cheese. You do not need to search a shop, hunt for a random drop, or make a separate trip to obtain it; the item is awarded when you speak to the mice at this starting burrow.

- Find the starting burrow. From the City of Orphans Sewers Lantern, check behind the ladder on the opposite side.
- Accept the mice’s request. Interacting with the burrow starts the side quest and awards Cheese.
- Continue through the sewer route. Follow the path until you reach the chest that contains the Sewers Key.
- Burn the gold vines. The vines are to the left of the Sewers Key chest. Clear them to reach the next area.
- Inspect the second burrow. This interaction explains what is happening with the undead held in a cell.
- Do not fire at the undead. Leave them alone and continue the quest. Attacking them causes an immediate failure.
What happens if you shoot the undead?
Shooting the undead in the cell is not a harmless combat choice or an alternate route. It instantly fails Mummy and Daddy. PowerPyx’s walkthrough states the warning plainly: “DO NOT SHOOT THEM or this instantly fails the quest.” If you have already fired, reload a save from before the attack if you want to preserve the side quest.

Use the Lantern as your reference point. The first burrow is behind the ladder on the opposite side of the Lantern in the City of Orphans Sewers, rather than at the sewer entrance.

I cannot find the Cheese
Interact with the first burrow and accept the request. Cheese is granted through that conversation with William; it is not documented as a separate chest item.

I reached the cell and enemies are present
Do not treat the undead as a mandatory encounter. After the second burrow reveals them, keep your weapon lowered and move on. Any shot instantly fails the quest.

Xbox Wire reported on October 13, 2026, that Valor Mortis is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Game Pass, with Xbox Play Anywhere support. Those platform details do not change the mice quest’s steps or its failure condition.
