The safest early path in Valor Mortis is not a single “best skill.” Build a survival margin with Maximum Health, add enough Endurance to complete attack-and-defense sequences, then specialize around your weapon and preferred combat rhythm. Keep level-up attributes separate from Ambers: attributes shape William’s baseline capabilities, while Ambers are slotted equipment that can radically change how a build functions.
What to prioritize first
Early combat rewards consistency more than maximum damage. Blades pressure enemy posture, firearms punish exposed weak points, and weak-point hits refill nephtoglobin (nephto). Enemy kills can also return ammunition. The result is a loop: use melee attacks and parries to create an opening, fire when a weak point is clearly exposed, then use the returned resource to keep pressure on the enemy.

- Maximum Health: gives you a larger margin while you learn parry, dodge and attack timing.
- Maximum Endurance: lets you attack, dodge, block and sprint through a complete action cycle without becoming helpless.
- Melee Damage or another style-specific damage attribute: invest after your defensive foundation is reliable.
- Build-specific options: choose firearm, Transmutation or other specialization only after you know which attacks you use most.
This ordering follows secondary progression guidance, not an official developer ranking. Treat it as a practical learning plan rather than a universal tier list.
How the combat loop turns skills into results
Break posture, then finish
Repeated blade attacks and well-timed parries damage posture. When posture breaks, use a heavy attack or powerful finisher instead of allowing the enemy to recover. Attack animations cannot be canceled into a parry, so begin a swing only when you have room to complete it.

Use firearms for weak points, not routine damage
Ammunition is scarce. Aim down sights at glowing weak points, called lambent blisters, and fire only when the shot is likely to connect. A successful weak-point hit refills nephtoglobin, allowing the resource to feed further openings. Some enemies carry explosive barrels; shooting the barrel can damage them without spending a long melee exchange.
Defend without wasting Endurance
Blocking reduces incoming damage but consumes Endurance. Dodging can evade ranged and heavy attacks as well as ordinary strikes. A perfect dodge briefly slows time, creating a safer response window. With supported weapons, a clean parry enables a counterattack. A counterattack immediately after blocking restores health lost while blocking, making defense a potential recovery tool rather than only a damage-reduction measure.
Spend Transmutation deliberately
Fire Transmutation consumes nephtoglobin and sets enemies alight, leaving them open to finishers. Because the same resource is refilled by weak-point hits, use Transmutation after you have a reliable way to replenish it rather than spending it at the start of every encounter.

| Attribute or investment | What the supporting references associate with it | Best early use |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Health | A larger health pool | Learning unfamiliar enemy timing and surviving mistakes |
| Maximum Endurance | More capacity for attacks, dodges, blocks and sprinting | Completing a defensive or offensive sequence without exhaustion |
| Might | Health and melee damage | Blade-focused characters who want stronger posture pressure |
| Endurance attribute | Maximum Endurance, regeneration and firearm damage in the secondary stats reference | Players who mix movement, blocking and firearms |
| Sufferance | Transmutation damage and nephtoglobin tolerance | Characters built around repeated Transmutation use |

Choosing Ambers for a combat style
Ambers are slotted at a Lantern. Leveling William increases the number of Ambers he can equip, but no source establishes that every named Amber is available during the opening hours or provides a definitive unlock order. The following are build-direction examples, not guaranteed first pickups.
Marksman’s Bane
This Amber allows bullet parries, and each successful bullet parry grants a Pistol round. It suits players who can read ranged attacks and are comfortable taking a precision-defense approach. It is less useful if you rarely attempt ranged parries.
Volatile End
A weak-point shot causes a damaging explosion. Choose it when you consistently aim at lambent blisters and want each successful firearm hit to affect nearby enemies as well.
Butcher’s Carnage
Melee strikes restore health, but Ferrofluid Flasks can no longer heal. The tradeoff favors aggressive players who stay on the offensive and accept a strict healing restriction. It is a poor fit for a cautious build that depends on flask-based recovery.
When a boss or elite repeatedly defeats you, change the plan instead of forcing one setup. The official launch guidance recommends trying different Transmutations, firearm combinations and inventory items, then returning with a new approach.
A practical early-game skill plan
Step 1: buy survivability at a Lantern
Leveling uses Catalysts at a Lantern. Secondary progression guidance says unspent Catalysts are lost on death until recovered, so spend them rather than carrying a large reserve into an uncertain area. Start with Maximum Health while enemy timings are still unfamiliar.
Step 2: test your complete action cycle
After adding health, invest in Maximum Endurance. In a safe encounter, check whether you can attack, dodge or block, reposition and attack again without emptying the bar. If you regularly become unable to act after one exchange, more Endurance is usually more valuable than a small damage increase.
Step 3: commit to a primary damage pattern
Blade users can move into Melee Damage or the Might-related benefits described in the secondary references. Firearm-oriented players can favor the Endurance-linked firearm benefits. Transmutation specialists can consider Sufferance. These are supporting mechanics references, not official balance guarantees.
Rank #4
Step 4: slot an Amber that reinforces your behavior
Pick the Amber whose condition you can trigger reliably. A bullet-parry effect is useful only when you recognize projectile timing; an explosive weak-point effect is useful only when you expose weak points often; melee healing is useful only if you accept losing flask healing.
Exploration is part of progression
Valor Mortis uses metroidvania-like progression. Later abilities can open areas you already visited, and levels may contain elevated combat arenas, shortcuts, alternate routes, optional rooms, echoes, journal pages and hidden mini-bosses. Revisit earlier spaces after gaining mobility or another traversal ability, and investigate side paths for Ambers. You are unlikely to find every Amber in one playthrough, so exploration and build planning work together.

- Attacking until the stamina bar is empty: stop one swing earlier so a dodge or parry remains available.
- Blocking every hit: blocking costs Endurance; use dodges or parries when the attack pattern permits.
- Firing at armored areas: conserve ammunition for lambent blisters, explosive barrels and glowing red-orange nodes that reveal blocked paths.
- Using Transmutation without a refill plan: land weak-point shots first so nephtoglobin can return.
- Relying on one Amber for every encounter: swap Transmutations, firearms and inventory items when a fight exposes a weakness in your current plan.
- Carrying Catalysts indefinitely: spend them at a Lantern because secondary progression guidance says unspent Catalysts are lost on death until recovered.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one best first skill?
No verified source establishes a universal first skill. Maximum Health followed by enough Endurance is the most defensible learning-oriented foundation, after which your weapon and combat habits should determine specialization.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are Ambers the same as level-up skills?
No. Attributes are purchased with Catalysts at Lanterns, while Ambers are slotted equipment. Ambers can change rules such as bullet parries, weak-point explosions or melee-based healing.
Best Value
Should I revisit early areas?
Yes. Later abilities can open previously visited routes, including shortcuts, optional areas and hidden encounters. Revisiting also improves your chances of finding Ambers, although a single playthrough is unlikely to contain every one.
