You can use a PS5 horizontally or vertically; Sony supports both orientations when you fit the correct support for your model. For the CFI-2000 Slim and CFI-7000 Pro groups, use the included horizontal feet when laying the console down, or a separately sold vertical stand when standing it up. CFI-1000 models use the supplied base in either position. Whichever orientation you choose, keep the console out of closed cabinets and other heat-trapping locations.
Can the PS5 be horizontal or vertical?
Yes. Sony provides setup instructions for both orientations. The right choice depends on your available space, your console model, and whether you can place it securely with the appropriate support—not on an established performance advantage.
What support does each PS5 model need?
Check the model number on your console and follow the matching instructions on Sony’s PS5 base and stand setup page. Sony distinguishes the CFI-1000 group from the CFI-2000 Slim and CFI-7000 Pro groups.

Does standing a PS5 up damage it?
The official setup and safety materials cited here support vertical placement when the console is set up with the specified support. They do not establish that vertical placement causes damage, nor do they provide comparative measurements showing one orientation is cooler, quieter, or better for performance. That absence of comparative evidence does not prove temperatures are identical in every setup.
How should you place the console for ventilation and stability?
Sony warns against using the console in a closed cabinet or any other location where heat may build up. Its safety guide states, “Do not use the console in a closed cabinet or other locations where heat may build up.” The cited guide covers CFI-71XX models, so consult the documentation for your own revision for model-specific instructions. Which orientation should you choose?
Choose based on your setup. Horizontal placement needs a wider shelf; vertical placement takes less shelf width but requires a stable, suitable space and the correct support. There is no evidence-based winner between the two for ordinary, well-ventilated placement in the official materials cited here. For Slim and Pro owners, vertical placement also means obtaining the separately sold stand; horizontal placement uses the included feet.
