Nintendo Switch reviews were especially strong, and Switch co-op does not require an amiibo.
What is included in Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove?
Yacht Club Games describes Treasure Trove as the full and complete edition of Shovel Knight. Its official press kit lists five games:
- Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope
- Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows
- Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment
- Shovel Knight: King of Cards
- Shovel Knight Showdown
The first four are character-led adventures. Showdown is a local four-player battle game, giving the collection a different kind of play from its platforming campaigns. Yacht Club Games also lists co-op for Shovel of Hope, challenge modes, and Body Swap mode on its Treasure Trove page.
How well reviewed is the Switch version?
Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic page showed a 91 Metascore when accessed on October 8, 2026. At that time it listed 17 critic reviews: 16 positive (94%), one mixed (6%), and none negative. These figures describe the Switch critic aggregate on that date, not every platform, and aggregate scores can change. See Metacritic’s Switch page.

Nintendo Life’s Nintendo Switch review, dated March 6, 2017, scored the game 90/100. The review praises the collection’s pixel-art presentation and treats the extra campaigns as a substantial expansion of the original experience. Read the Nintendo Life review.
Yacht Club Games describes the games’ look and sound as 8-bit-inspired, with modern animation and multilayered parallax backgrounds. That is the developer’s description; Nintendo Life’s review offers an independent assessment of the pixel-art presentation.

Do you need an amiibo for Switch co-op?
No. Nintendo Life notes that Treasure Trove removed the requirement to own a Shovel Knight amiibo to play co-op on Switch. Some amiibo functionality remains, but amiibo are not a prerequisite for co-op. Nintendo Life’s review discusses the Switch-specific change.
Is there a physical edition?
Yes. Yacht Club Games announced a physical release on August 30, 2018, stating that all five games were on the card or disc without an additional download at the time of that announcement. That historical release announcement does not establish present-day stock or condition. Check the platform and edition on any listing to make sure it is Treasure Trove, rather than an older base-game release. Read the developer’s physical-release announcement.

Which version should you buy?
Choose based on where you want to play and which collection features matter to you; the available evidence does not establish a current platform-by-platform content advantage.
- Prefer handheld play? The Switch version is a natural fit for portability, and the Switch-specific review record is strong.
- Want local multiplayer? Consider whether you will use Shovel of Hope co-op or Showdown’s local battles, and check how the platform you choose supports play with your intended group.
- Want a physical copy? A physical edition was announced for Switch and other formats in 2018, but verify current availability, platform, and that the listing is for Treasure Trove.
- Interested in amiibo? Treat them as optional figures and feature unlocks, not as a requirement for Switch co-op. Yacht Club Games says the figures unlock challenges in their respective games, cosmetic armor, and a fairy companion; current availability is not established.
Verdict: Is Treasure Trove worth playing?
For players drawn to retro-style platforming, Treasure Trove offers more variety than a single-campaign release: four character-led adventures, plus a separate local battle game. The Switch critic aggregate and Nintendo Life review both point to a well-regarded edition, while the amiibo clarification makes the co-op decision straightforward. It is less compelling if you only want one focused campaign or have no interest in the additional modes.
