Start with Silent Hill 2 (2024) if you want the strongest modern entry point into psychological survival horror. Bloober Team’s remake is a self-contained story about grief and guilt, with a substantial campaign, exploration, puzzles, combat and multiple endings. Choose Blair Witch first instead if you want a roughly six-hour, first-person forest nightmare that works well over one or two evenings and is available on older consoles, Switch and Quest.
These are unusually fair games to compare: both were directed by Bloober Team’s Mateusz Lenart, both turn trauma into monsters and spaces, and both prefer slow dread to nonstop jump scares. Their player experiences are still very different. Blair Witch is a linear, camcorder-driven woodland game with a dog companion; Silent Hill 2 is a larger over-the-shoulder survival-horror campaign in which ammunition, health, maps and puzzles all matter.

Which horror game should you play first?
For most readers, play the Silent Hill 2 remake first. It is the better-reviewed, more substantial and more accessible modern game, and its plot stands on its own. You do not need the mythology of the 1999 Silent Hill or the events of Silent Hill 3 to understand James Sunderland’s journey.
Pick Blair Witch first when the deciding factor is format rather than reputation. It is the right choice for a single weekend, first-person immersion, a companion dog, found-footage aesthetics, minimal gunplay or hardware that cannot run the remake. It also gives you a compact introduction to Bloober’s way of turning guilt and mental distress into a hostile environment.

- Choose Blair Witch first for a six-hour first-person experience, forest tension, camcorder puzzles, a dog you can command and a lower commitment.
- Choose the original Silent Hill first only if 1999 presentation, tank-style movement, fog shaped by PS1 hardware and the Alessa/Order storyline are specifically what you want.
Neither game is a universal substitute for the other. Blair Witch feels Silent Hill-adjacent, but its mixed reception and shorter, more linear design make it an alternative mood rather than a replacement for the remake.
What are Blair Witch and the Silent Hill 2 remake?
Blair Witch (2019)
Blair Witch is a single-player, first-person survival-horror game set in 1996, two years after The Blair Witch Project. Former police officer and Gulf War veteran Ellis Lynch enters Black Hills Forest with his German shepherd, Bullet, to search for nine-year-old Peter Shannon. The game was developed by Bloober Team, published by Lionsgate Games and built in Unreal Engine 4.
Its main tools are deliberately diegetic. You use a flashlight to ward off silhouetted creatures, issue Bullet commands such as Seek, Stay, Pet and Reprimand, and use red camcorder tapes to rewind or alter parts of the environment. Blue tapes provide story context. Ellis’s 1990s cellphone handles calls, voicemail and small diversions including Snake and Astro Blaster.
There are four principal endings and a secret ending. How you treat Bullet and which violent choices Ellis makes influence the outcome. The game is rated Mature and includes PTSD, a police shooting, Gulf War trauma, child abduction and the possibility of a dog’s death.
Silent Hill 2 remake (2024)
The remake reworks Konami’s 2001 classic in Unreal Engine 5. Bloober Team again led development, with Mateusz Lenart directing, original creature designer Masahiro Ito returning and composer Akira Yamaoka contributing again. James Sunderland travels to Silent Hill, Maine, after receiving a letter from his deceased wife Mary. Fog, the Otherworld and creatures such as Pyramid Head express what James carries into the town.
The remake launched for PlayStation 5 and Windows on 8 October 2024; the Steam storefront lists 7 October 2024. It came to Xbox Series X/S on 21 November 2025 after a one-year PS5 console-exclusivity period. The campaign includes multiple endings, including Leave, Maria, In Water, Stillness, Bliss, Rebirth and joke endings involving a dog and a UFO.

What is the difference between the two games?
The shared subject is psychological horror, but the verbs are different. Blair Witch asks you to search, listen, manage Bullet and manipulate recorded images. Silent Hill 2 asks you to explore interlocking areas, read a map, solve environmental puzzles, conserve resources and survive direct encounters.
| Category | Blair Witch | Silent Hill 2 remake |

| Length | About six hours according to writer Barbara Kciuk; reported runs range from roughly 4.5 to 7 hours, with longer searches for alternate endings | A full survival-horror campaign; an exact main-story HowLongToBeat figure was not established |

| Combat | Flashlight-warding and stealth against silhouetted threats; death restarts the encounter rather than using a lives system | Melee weapons including a plank and steel pipe, plus pistol and shotgun; ammunition and health are limited |

Is the Silent Hill 2 remake a good place to start?
Yes. It is the default starting point for modern-console players. The remake preserves the original story’s characters and themes while updating movement, inventory handling, visuals and sound. IGN describes it as a faithful recreation with quality-of-life improvements, and GameRant calls it the easiest route into the franchise.
You can follow James’s story without knowing the Order, Alessa or the historical timeline established by the first and third games. The town is the common setting, not a requirement that you complete every previous chapter. That makes the remake unusually welcoming for a series with approximately 18 games and side entries since 1999.
The remake is also the stronger choice if you want to continue exploring the franchise. After it, you can move to the original Silent Hill games for historical context, or try newer self-contained projects such as Silent Hill f, set in 1960s Japan, and Silent Hill: Townfall, set around St. Amelia in 1996. Bloober is also remaking the original 1999 Silent Hill, although that project is separate from the 2024 remake.
What the remake modernizes
- Fluid over-the-shoulder movement replaces the original’s more rigid presentation.
- Inventory juggling is faster and more readable.
- Fog is denser, interiors are more detailed and audio design is built for current hardware.
- Combat remains intentionally awkward and vulnerable instead of becoming an action game.
- Puzzle and combat difficulty are independent, so you can adjust the kind of pressure you want.
What you need on PC
The Steam minimum specification lists an Intel Core i7-6700K or Ryzen 5 3600 processor, GTX 1070 Ti, RX 5700 or Arc A750 graphics, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12 and 50 GB of storage. An SSD is recommended. These are minimum store requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or image-quality setting.
Is Blair Witch worth playing first?
It is worth choosing first when its short, first-person format matches your taste. Bloober’s forest is often effective at making landmarks unreliable and sound threatening. Headphones are especially appropriate because reviewers praised the binaural audio. Bullet is both an emotional companion and a practical waypoint: he can search, point toward danger and react to the environment.

The game’s best ideas are also its most distinctive. A red tape can turn a recorded image into a present-day instruction, opening routes or changing what the forest contains. The cellphone, camcorder and dog commands make Ellis feel like a person in a 1990s search operation rather than an abstract game avatar.
Its limitations are well documented. IGN, The Verge and Eurogamer reported getting stuck in terrain or lost among similar paths. Bullet’s artificial intelligence can be inconsistent. Kotaku found flashlight combat capable of becoming frantic spinning, while The Verge and Eurogamer considered the surreal final chapter overextended. Several reviewers called the trauma twist predictable and the ending conditions unclear.
Reception reflects that split: Metacritic lists a 69 PC Metascore from 45 critic reviews, with 40% positive, 53% mixed and 7% negative, alongside a 6.2 user score from 564 ratings. Individual reviews were much warmer, including IGN’s 8.8/10, WCCFTech’s 7.9/10, TheGamer’s 5/5 and ScreenRant’s 9/10. The broad pattern is atmospheric praise alongside reservations about navigation, combat consistency and the last act.
How long is Blair Witch?
Barbara Kciuk, one of the game’s writers, said, “It should take around six hours, but it depends on how you play through it.” Kotaku completed its 17 chapters in six hours; The Verge reported about five hours; Eurogamer took ten hours after getting lost and estimated six for a more direct run. ScreenRant described it as a seven-hour experience that becomes longer if you pursue alternate endings.
That makes Blair Witch a one- or two-evening game rather than a long-term commitment. Replays can be meaningful because Bullet’s treatment and Ellis’s decisions affect the ending, but the game does not offer the same breadth of exploration, combat management or puzzle density as the remake.
Which game is scarier?
There is no objective winner because the fear comes from different pressures. Blair Witch is more immediate when you are alone in first person, hearing the forest through headphones and checking a camcorder while Bullet moves ahead. Silent Hill 2 is more oppressive over time: the map expands, resources stay limited and every symbolic creature suggests something about James.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Both games use ambiguity rather than constant jump-scare repetition. Reviewers still identified some cheap jumps in Blair Witch, so readers who dislike sudden audio or visual shocks should not assume its slow-burn reputation means zero jump scares.
Content warnings
- Blair Witch includes PTSD, panic, a police shooting, Gulf War trauma, child abduction, violence and a possible dog death.
- Silent Hill 2 includes grief, mercy killing, sexual abuse involving Angela, suicide-related endings and a child in danger.
IGN reviewer Len Hafer, writing from firsthand experience with PTSD and panic attacks, called Blair Witch one of the most accurate artistic depictions of those experiences he had seen and cautioned readers with similar histories to prepare themselves. That warning is more useful than a generic “mature themes” label because the game repeatedly puts Ellis inside panic, guilt and traumatic memory.
Should you play the original Silent Hill first?
Only if you want the first game’s specific historical and mechanical character. The 1999 release remains important for atmosphere: its fog, fixed camera work and constrained visibility create fear partly through PlayStation-era limitations. GameRant lists a seven-hour HowLongToBeat figure and an 86 Metascore, while The Guardian’s description of the series still fits its design: “This is a game that deliberately disempowers its protagonist and, through him, the player.”
It is a poor first recommendation for someone seeking a convenient modern-console experience. Availability is awkward, and IGN identifies emulation guides as the practical path unless you own original hardware. Start there for Alessa and the Order, then play Silent Hill 3; otherwise begin with the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake and return to the original when you want to study the series’ roots.
What should you know about buying and platform choice?
Platform availability may decide the question before taste does. Blair Witch is the broad hardware option: Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Switch, Quest and Luna versions exist. The remake requires PlayStation 5, Windows or Xbox Series X/S.
| Game | Hardware fit | Price information checked Nov 2026 | Commitment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silent Hill 2 remake | PS5, Xbox Series X/S or a PC meeting the listed minimum specification | Metacritic’s where-to-buy module listed $22.99 on Amazon, reduced from $29.99; storefront prices can change | Full campaign with puzzles, combat and multiple endings |
| Blair Witch | Last-generation consoles, Switch, Quest, Luna or Windows | Metacritic listed an $88.99 Amazon offer and a $4.79 digital deal; these may represent different editions and are volatile | About six hours, with replay value from alternate endings |
Blair Witch launched on Xbox Game Pass in 2019, but current Game Pass and PlayStation Plus availability was not verified, so check the live catalog instead of assuming the launch offer remains.

What is the best Bloober and Silent Hill playing order?
If your goal is to understand the studio’s horror voice, play Blair Witch first and then the Silent Hill 2 remake. You will notice the through-line from a guilty police veteran in an unstable forest to a grieving widower in a town that externalizes guilt, while also seeing how the later game expands combat, puzzles and environmental storytelling.
- Start with Silent Hill 2 remake if you want the best standalone game and the cleanest entry into the franchise.
- Add Blair Witch for a shorter, first-person variation on trauma horror.
- Play original Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3 when you want the Alessa/Order arc; Silent Hill 3 is the mainline game that most strongly expects knowledge of the first.
- Try Silent Hill f or Townfall for newer self-contained settings rather than a continuation of James’s story.
How we picked between them
The recommendation weighs the factors that change a first playthrough: how much time the game demands, whether it is available on your hardware, camera and control style, combat and navigation pressure, psychological content, need for franchise knowledge, replay structure and critical consensus. It does not treat a review score as a substitute for fit. The remake leads on modern accessibility, scope and broad reception; Blair Witch leads on brevity, first-person atmosphere and platform reach.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should you watch The Blair Witch Project first?
No. The game is set in the film universe and uses the Black Hills Forest, but its story follows Ellis and Peter rather than asking you to remember film details. Watching the 1999 film can add flavor to the found-footage language, yet it is not homework and cannot replace playing the game if you want the mechanics, Bullet relationship and camcorder puzzles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to play Silent Hill 1 before the Silent Hill 2 remake?
No. James Sunderland’s story is largely standalone, and the remake explains the town through his personal history rather than requiring the Alessa and Order storyline. Play the 1999 game first only if that specific lore and its PS1-era design are your priority.
Should I play the original Silent Hill 2 or the remake?
The remake is the practical first choice on current hardware, with updated movement, inventory handling, visuals and audio. The 2001 version remains valuable for its original pacing, fixed cinematic cameras and historical influence, so it is best approached afterward as a contrasting interpretation.
Is Blair Witch scary if I dislike jump scares?
Much of its fear comes from isolation, sound, unreliable paths and camcorder changes rather than constant attacks. Reviewers did flag some cheap jumps and frantic flashlight encounters, so it is slower than an action horror game but not free of sudden shocks.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I play Blair Witch on Nintendo Switch or Quest?
Yes. The Switch version released on 25 June 2020, and Oculus Quest and Quest 2 versions followed on 29 October 2020. Those versions make it the more accessible choice if you do not own a current-generation console or a gaming PC.
Does the Blair Witch game continue the movie’s exact story?
It is an original 1996 story in the same fictional universe, set two years after the first film. Movie lore is background atmosphere; the game’s central arc is Ellis, Peter and Bullet, with its own endings and interpretation of the forest.
