There is no single best Sims 4 preset for every computer. Start with the graphics level the game selects after benchmarking your PC or Mac, then make one change at a time in the same save and a comparable lot. On a laptop or a computer close to the minimum requirements, enable Laptop Mode first. If a capable system still stutters, investigate mods, crowded lots, background applications, drivers and GPU selection instead of repeatedly lowering image quality. The steps below separate visual compromises from problems that graphics sliders cannot fix.

| Keep auto-selected settings and diagnose other causes | Capable computers that stutter | Use the level chosen by the first-launch benchmark | PC, Mac | Oct 2026 |
| Laptop Mode | Laptops and systems near minimum requirements | Game Options > Laptop Mode; EA says it improves efficiency | PC, Mac | Oct 2026 |
| Individual control tuning | Players protecting a favorite visual feature | Lower scene resolution, reflections, lighting, effects or view distance one at a time | PC | Oct 2026 |
| Memory Boost | PC players investigating memory-related stutter | Game Options > Other; Automatic, Enable or Disable; restart required | PC only, if available | Oct 2026 |
| Compatible hardware upgrade | Computers below a confirmed requirement | Verify the actual CPU, RAM, GPU, storage and upgrade limits first | PC, Mac | Oct 2026 |
What graphics settings should you start with?
Start with the level selected automatically by The Sims 4. EA says the game benchmarks a PC or Mac on first launch and chooses settings for that hardware. Raising options above that baseline can create problems on lower-spec machines, so “Ultra” is not a universal recommendation.

Before changing anything, record the current selections or take screenshots. Load the same save, visit the same lot and use a similar camera angle for each comparison. A busy community lot and an empty residential lot can behave very differently, so changing the test scene at the same time as a setting makes the result difficult to interpret.
Change one control, play long enough to encounter the usual hitch, and compare both smoothness and lost detail. Restore a setting if its visual cost is not worth the improvement. No official EA material establishes a universal frames-per-second ranking for each slider, so treat this as personal balancing rather than a guaranteed FPS recipe.

How do I turn on Laptop Mode?
Laptop Mode is the supported first test for a laptop or a computer close to EA’s minimum specifications. EA describes it as improving frame rate and efficiency, but it can reduce visual detail and may alter the appearance of custom content.
- Launch The Sims 4 and open the three-dot menu.
- Choose Game Options.
- Open the graphics section and select Laptop Mode.
- Apply the change, then load the same save and lot you used for the baseline.
- Compare Sims, clothing, objects and custom content with Laptop Mode off and on. Keep it enabled if the smoother behavior is worth the visual reduction.
Do not assume Laptop Mode will cure every hitch. A mod using excessive memory, a heavily decorated lot or a competing application can remain the cause even after this switch is enabled. The menu path above is for PC and Mac; do not copy it to console editions, whose controls and options differ.

Which individual settings should I lower first?
Lower the options that affect the whole 3D scene before sacrificing the detail that matters most to you. The available PC controls listed by an EA Forums player include Sims, Objects, Lighting, Reflections, Visual Effects, Edge Smoothing, 3D Scene Resolution, View Distance, Uncompressed Sim Textures, Post-processing Effects and Laptop Mode. That list describes controls, not an official preset or a measured performance ranking.
3D Scene Resolution
This is a sensible first experiment when the scene is generally too demanding. Lowering it can make the world look softer, especially at high resolution, while preserving the identity of Sims and objects better than reducing every category at once.
Reflections
Reflections can be costly in rooms with mirrors, shiny floors or large windows. Reduce them if stutter is concentrated around reflective surfaces. The trade-off is less convincing mirror and surface detail rather than a change to Sim faces or clothing.
Lighting and Visual Effects
Lighting and effects influence shadows, glow, weather-like effects and other scene treatments. Lower them when outdoor scenes, special effects or heavily lit interiors trigger slowdowns. Check the same lot in daylight and at night before deciding that the change helped.

View Distance
Reducing View Distance limits how far the game draws detailed scenery. It may help a large world view, but distant objects will appear later or with less detail. This is a useful compromise for a player who spends most time indoors, not a guaranteed FPS increase.
Edge Smoothing and post-processing
Edge Smoothing affects jagged outlines, while post-processing affects image treatments applied after the scene is rendered. Lowering either can make the picture harsher or flatter. Try them after scene resolution, reflections and lighting if those larger scene costs did not solve the hitch.
Sim, Object and texture detail
Keep Sims detail higher if faces, hair and clothing are your priority, then reduce Objects or other scene options first. Uncompressed Sim Textures preserve sharper character textures but consume more memory; disabling them is a possible compromise when character detail is less important than stability. There is no evidence that one of these controls delivers a fixed gain on every computer.
Should V-Sync be on or off?
Use V-Sync as a response to visible screen tearing, not as a universal speed switch. EA suggests trying V-Sync On when tearing is visible. If tearing is not your symptom, changing V-Sync may not address the underlying hitch, and it should not replace testing the other causes in this guide.
What is Memory Boost, and is it available on Mac?
Memory Boost is an early-access, PC-only option described by EA. If it appears in your installation, open Game Options > Other and choose Automatic, Enable or Disable. Selecting a choice restarts the game, so save and close anything else first.
Do not assume the option exists on Mac or on every PC build. Its early-access status and availability can change with updates. Compare the same save after each selection rather than treating Enable as a guaranteed improvement.

Why does The Sims 4 still lag on a good laptop?
Graphics quality is only one part of performance. The Sims Team says that the number of things drawn and the number of interactive objects both affect how the game runs. Mirrors, complicated routing through many doors or stairs, heavily decorated lots and numerous active Sims can create slowdowns even on a computer that handles the normal graphics level.
- Lot complexity: test a simpler lot in the same save. If the hitch follows one highly decorated build, the lot rather than the global preset is the likely trigger.
- Routing and objects: many doors, stairs, mirrors and interactive items increase the work the simulation performs.
- Active Sims: a crowded venue can be less smooth than an otherwise identical empty scene.
- Background applications: browsers, launchers, recording tools and other resource-heavy programs compete for memory and CPU time. Close unnecessary programs before retesting.
- Drivers and GPU selection: on a PC with integrated and dedicated graphics, check that the game uses the intended GPU and that graphics drivers are current.
These checks explain why lowering every visual option can fail to solve a stutter that is caused by simulation load, memory pressure or software configuration.

EA warns that many mods can consume memory and CPU resources. Use a controlled, reversible test rather than deleting files or saving over a modded household.
- Exit the game and move or disable mods and custom content according to EA’s current mod guidance.
- Start the game with the content disabled and load the same save or a clean test save.
- Visit the lot and repeat the camera movement that normally stutters.
- Exit without saving while custom content is absent. Saving a game with missing content can remove that content from the save.
- Check each creator’s compatibility notes before re-enabling files, especially after a game update.
- Re-enable content in small groups until the problem returns, then isolate the individual file or set.
EA’s mod guidance is available at help.ea.com/en/articles/the-sims/the-sims-4/mods-and-the-sims-4-game-updates/. A clean test that removes the hitch points to content or a conflict; it does not prove that the graphics preset was too high.
What are The Sims 4’s PC and Mac requirements?
EA lists 4 GB of system RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended for both PC and Mac. EA’s recommended PC graphics examples are an NVIDIA GTX 650 or AMD Radeon HD 7750 (or better) with 1 GB of video RAM. The requirements also call for free storage space, but the amount depends on the edition and installed content. These are compatibility specifications, not promises of a particular frame rate.
| Requirement information from EA | What it means for troubleshooting |
|---|---|
| 4 GB RAM minimum | A computer at this floor has little headroom for the game, the operating system and mods. |
| 8 GB RAM recommended | Use total installed RAM as the comparison, not the capacity of a module you might buy. |
| GTX 650 or Radeon HD 7750 or better, 1 GB video RAM (recommended PC examples) | Identify the installed GPU and its video memory before attributing a hitch to graphics power. |
| Free storage required | Check available space and the drive type; the requirements page does not establish an FPS gain from a particular drive. |
See EA’s current requirements page at help.ea.com/en/articles/the-sims/the-sims-4/system-requirements/?cid=87188. Confirm your installed CPU, RAM, GPU, video memory and free space before considering a purchase. A requirement comparison cannot tell you whether a particular laptop has soldered memory, an empty slot or a supported maximum.

When is a hardware upgrade justified?
Consider an upgrade only after you identify a shortfall or bottleneck in the actual computer. An upgrade is not a prerequisite for trying the free settings and diagnostic steps above.
RAM
If the computer has less than EA’s 8 GB recommended total RAM, an 8GB laptop RAM upgrade search is only a starting point. Verify the existing capacity, memory generation, number of slots, supported maximum and whether the memory is soldered. An 8 GB retail module is not automatically compatible, and adding one does not guarantee a performance result.
Graphics card
A desktop graphics-card upgrade makes sense only when the installed GPU is the confirmed limitation and the replacement fits the power supply, case and motherboard. Identify the model and video memory first; no single card is a universal recommendation for every PC.
Storage
A compatible internal SSD can help when free space or loading is the problem, but it should not be marketed as a proven FPS cure. Keep enough free space for the game and installed packs, and verify the interface and physical fit before buying.
Any hardware purchase should follow compatibility checks, not the assumption that a lower preset failed. EA’s requirements page is the appropriate starting point for the supported baseline.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can Pack Selection or DirectX 11 improve performance?
EA’s August 19, 2025 update introduced Pack Selection to free resources when starting a new save. EA warns that removing packs after a save has begun can affect that save, so it is not a universal switch for an established game. Decide which packs a new save needs before creating it, and keep a backup of important saves.

The same update contains DirectX 11 notes involving Intel GPU defaults. They do not justify an old DirectX 9 launch tweak or a blanket recommendation to disable packs. Treat those notes as version-specific guidance and check EA’s current instructions after a major patch.
What performance gains has EA reported?
In its May 27, 2025 update, Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 Team reported up to 22 FPS gain in Laptop Mode, up to 10% improvement in lot loading times and over 18 MB saved in memory usage. Those figures describe the publisher’s patch optimizations under its stated conditions; they are not independent tests and do not promise the same result from toggling a setting on every computer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Sims Team summarizes the broader issue this way: “Beyond your computer’s hardware, two main things affect how well The Sims 4 runs:” It then identifies what is drawn on screen and the interactive objects in the world. That is why lot complexity, simulation load and mods belong in the diagnosis alongside graphics quality.
What is the fastest troubleshooting order?
- Return to the game’s automatically selected graphics level if you raised it above the first-launch benchmark.
- Record settings and test the same save, lot and camera view.
- On a laptop or near-minimum machine, enable Laptop Mode and compare visual quality.
- If the issue remains, lower one scene-wide control at a time: 3D Scene Resolution, Reflections, Lighting, Visual Effects or View Distance.
- Use V-Sync On only when tearing is visible.
- On a PC, test Memory Boost if the option is available, remembering that the game restarts.
- Disable mods and custom content, test without saving, and check creator compatibility before restoring files.
- Try a simpler lot, close background applications, update drivers and verify dedicated-GPU selection.
- Compare the computer with EA’s RAM, GPU and storage requirements.
- Only then investigate a compatible RAM, GPU or storage upgrade.
This order preserves useful visual detail while separating a graphics bottleneck from a save, lot, mod or system problem.
How we picked these settings
The recommendations follow EA’s automatic first-launch benchmark, its Laptop Mode and graphics troubleshooting guidance, the controls documented in the EA Forums discussion, the published PC/Mac requirements, and the documented limits of Memory Boost, mods and Pack Selection. No slider is presented with a universal FPS promise because the cited material does not establish one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will lowering every setting make The Sims 4 smooth?
Not necessarily. Simulation load from a crowded or highly interactive lot, mods, memory pressure, background applications, drivers or GPU selection can cause stutter independently of image quality. Diagnose those causes before accepting a large visual downgrade.
Does Laptop Mode remove custom content?
Laptop Mode changes rendering behavior; it does not by itself delete custom-content files. Compare the appearance of your Sims and content with the mode on and off, and use the separate mod-isolation procedure if content is causing instability.
Can I remove packs from an existing save to free memory?
EA warns that removing packs after a save has begun can affect that save. Pack Selection is intended to free resources when starting a new save, so make a backup and choose packs before creating that save.
Is 8 GB of RAM enough for every Sims 4 setup?
Eight gigabytes is EA’s recommended total system RAM, not a guarantee for every combination of packs, mods and background programs. Check the complete computer and workload; a module labeled 8 GB may also be incompatible with a particular laptop.
