wmm2res2.dll is a Windows Movie Maker resource file. If wmm2res2.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or cannot be loaded, repair the Movie Maker installation that supplied it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows, record:
- Which Movie Maker edition is installed: Windows XP Movie Maker 2.x, a Vista-era Movie Maker, or Windows Live Movie Maker
- Whether the error appears when launching Movie Maker, opening a project, or importing media
- Whether the problem began after reinstalling Movie Maker, restoring a disk image, deleting files, or an antivirus quarantine
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the program folder still contains the Movie Maker executable and related files
The file is associated particularly with the Windows XP-era Movie Maker 2.x installation. Historical metadata identifies wmm2res2.dll as a small 32-bit Microsoft Windows Movie Maker resource DLL, commonly located in:

It is not a normal current Windows runtime file and should not be treated like a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or graphics-driver component.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the complete Movie Maker installation
This is the most likely solution when the error appears immediately after launching Movie Maker or after copying the program from another computer.

If Movie Maker is listed in installed programs
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:

appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the Movie Maker or Windows Essentials entry.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- If a repair option is offered, select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Movie Maker from its normal shortcut.
If the repair option is unavailable or the error remains:
- Return to Programs and Features.
- Uninstall the damaged Movie Maker installation.
- Restart the computer.
- Reinstall the exact Movie Maker generation intended for the original operating system and service-pack level.
- Start Movie Maker before restoring projects or custom codecs.
Back up your project files and source videos first. Uninstalling the application should not be treated as a substitute for backing up those files.
If Movie Maker was copied manually
A copied program folder is often incomplete. It may omit resource files, codecs, registry settings, shared components, or dependencies. Copying wmm2res2.dll into that folder may remove one message while leaving the installation unusable.
Remove the incomplete copy and reinstall from:
- Original Windows XP installation media
- A known-good installation of the same Movie Maker release
- A legitimate Microsoft-provided source, where one is available
Microsoft states that Windows Essentials 2012, which included a later Movie Maker product, is no longer supported or officially available for download. Avoid installers advertised as unofficial “free Movie Maker” packages.
What success looks like
The program should open from its own shortcut without the DLL message. Test a small project and import a media file. If launching works but importing produces “Class not registered,” the problem may involve codecs, DirectShow filters, or another Movie Maker component rather than wmm2res2.dll.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus removed the file
Security software can quarantine a file from an old application. It can also correctly block a modified DLL from an unofficial installer.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand entries related to Movie Maker or
wmm2res2.dll. - Check the original file path and detection details.
- If the file came from an unofficial DLL site or repackaged installer, do not restore it.
- If it came from verified, original Movie Maker media, confirm the installation source and scan the entire installation before considering Restore or Allow on device.
After restoring a legitimate quarantined file, reinstall or repair Movie Maker so that its other files are also checked. If Windows Security detects the file again, stop restoring it and run a full scan.
What success looks like
The file should be restored to the Movie Maker installation directory, not to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Launch Movie Maker again. A repeated detection means the file’s provenance or contents need investigation, not repeated exclusion.

Fix 3: Confirm the path and architecture
A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit Movie Maker program through Windows-on-Windows support. That does not make wmm2res2.dll a 64-bit file.
Check the expected location:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Browse to:
text
C:Program FilesMovie Maker
- Look for the Movie Maker executable and its associated files.
- If Movie Maker is installed elsewhere, right-click its shortcut, select Properties, and inspect Target.
- Open that installation directory and check whether
wmm2res2.dllis present.
Do not copy a 64-bit replacement into the folder simply because Windows is 64-bit. Do not copy a file from Vista Movie Maker, Windows Live Movie Maker, or another computer unless the complete application build and operating-system release match.
A message stating that “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL or by the Movie Maker executable.
What success looks like
The DLL is present beside the matching Movie Maker files, and the application starts without a loader error. If the file exists but the same message remains, reinstall the complete application rather than changing its location.
Fix 4: Do not run regsvr32 on this resource DLL
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command.
Do not run:
regsvr32 wmm2res2.dll
wmm2res2.dll is a Movie Maker resource DLL, not a normal COM or ActiveX server. Registering it can produce errors such as “entry point not found” or “module failed to load,” without repairing Movie Maker.
If Movie Maker reports Class not registered, treat that as a separate diagnosis. It can involve DirectShow filters, codecs, or other Movie Maker components. Repairing the full Movie Maker installation is safer than registering random DLLs.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
System File Checker and DISM are useful when Windows components are corrupted. They do not normally restore a missing file belonging only to an old application.

Open an elevated terminal:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run DISM first:
bat
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
bat
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Movie Maker again.
Microsoft’s documented order is DISM followed by SFC. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove the Movie Maker installation is intact. The file may belong to the application rather than the Windows component store.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make this step difficult to troubleshoot. What success looks like
DISM completes without an error, SFC completes, and Movie Maker launches after the restart. If the same DLL message remains, return to the Movie Maker repair or reinstall step.
Fix 6: Check drivers only for broader media failures
A driver update is not the normal fix for a missing Movie Maker resource DLL. Consider drivers only if Movie Maker also crashes during video playback, fails to display previews, or Windows reports a separate graphics, audio, or capture-device problem.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any relevant camera or capture-device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Note the device name and current status.
- Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by the computer or device manufacturer, where available.
- Restart Windows and test Movie Maker.

What success looks like
The relevant device works normally in Windows and Movie Maker no longer fails during media playback. If only the DLL error remains, drivers were not the cause.

System Restore may help if the error started immediately after a program removal, system change, or failed installation.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:

rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the Movie Maker failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings. It is not a replacement for backing up personal projects or video files. If no suitable restore point exists, reinstall the complete matching Movie Maker version instead.

Do not download wmm2res2.dll from a DLL index, file mirror, forum attachment, or “DLL fixer.” A standalone file can be:
- Modified or malicious
- From the wrong Movie Maker generation
- The wrong architecture
- Built for a different language or service-pack level
- Missing dependencies that cause the same error again
It may also encourage copying an application file into System32, which is not its normal location. The safe source is the complete, verified Movie Maker installation that originally supplied the file, using original media or a legitimate Microsoft-provided source where available.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility
The presence of wmm2res2.dll does not make Windows XP-era Movie Maker compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11. Classic Movie Maker is obsolete, and later Windows versions used different Movie Maker generations.
If the application still fails after a correct reinstall:
- Confirm that the installed Movie Maker release matches its intended Windows version.
- Right-click the Movie Maker shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Use compatibility settings only as a limited test, not as a guarantee.
- Keep the old installation backed up and isolated if it must be preserved.
- Use a supported video editor on the current Windows installation for regular work.
Do not mix XP Movie Maker files with Vista or Windows Essentials files. If you need the old application, a backed-up legacy Windows environment is safer than repeatedly replacing individual DLLs on a current system.
FAQ
Is wmm2res2.dll a Windows system DLL?
No. It is associated with classic Windows Movie Maker and normally belongs in the application’s installation directory. It is not a standard current System32 or SysWOW64 runtime file.

The filename is associated with a genuine Microsoft Movie Maker resource file, but a filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. Check its path, source, metadata, and antivirus history. A copy from an unofficial download package should not be trusted automatically.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first response to this error. The most likely problem is an incomplete or damaged Movie Maker installation. Install a runtime only when a specific Movie Maker dependency or separate error identifies it.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. Use the matching Movie Maker installation directory. Copying an application resource DLL into a Windows system directory can create more confusion and does not repair missing dependencies.
Why does the message say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?
The loader may be missing a dependency, or the file may not match the executable. Reinstall the complete, matching Movie Maker package instead of replacing the named DLL alone.
