For SkyFactory 5 version 5.0.8, plan around 6GB of total system RAM for a fresh private server, 8GB for a growing factory, and about 12GB for heavy automation, extra dimensions, or public use. The shipped server JVM uses a 4GB heap, but the operating system and Java need memory outside that heap. SkyFactory 5.0.8 runs on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.4.0 and requires 64-bit Java 17. CPU single-thread performance matters more than a high core count, and storage must include room for the world, Forge files, logs, upgrades, and backups—not just the roughly 300MB server download.
What are the official SkyFactory 5 requirements?
The official SkyFactory 5 project information identifies version 5.0.8 as a Minecraft 1.20.1 pack using Forge 47.4.0. Java 17 is required, and it must be a 64-bit installation. The same project page recommends allocating at least 6GB of RAM to the client; that is not a universal server requirement.

Server sizing comes from the 5.0.8 server README and its supplied JVM arguments. The README calls 4GB the recommended minimum server memory, while user_jvm_args.txt ships with -Xmx4G. Because that value is only the Java heap, a machine with exactly 4GB of physical RAM is undersized for reliable operation.
| Component | SkyFactory 5.0.8 requirement or planning guidance |
|---|---|
| Pack version | SkyFactory 5.0.8 |
| Minecraft | 1.20.1 |
| Mod loader | Forge 47.4.0 |
| Java | 64-bit Java 17 |
| Client memory | At least 6GB allocated, according to the official project page |
| Server heap | 4GB recommended minimum in the server README; the shipped setting is -Xmx4G |
| Total server RAM | About 6GB for a new world, 8GB as a practical growth target, and roughly 12GB for demanding workloads |
| Server archive | Just under 300MB before libraries, world data, logs, and backups are added |
How much RAM does a SkyFactory 5 server need?
Use total physical RAM, not just the heap number, when choosing a host or computer. A fresh, small private world can start with 6GB total RAM while retaining the supplied 4GB heap. A growing factory is better served by 8GB total, and a late-game or public server should have about 12GB available as a starting point.

| Total machine RAM | Typical use | Heap and headroom |
|---|---|---|
| 4GB | Not a practical total allocation for the normal server setup | The shipped 4GB heap would leave no sensible room for the operating system and Java overhead |
| 6GB | Fresh world, small private group, modest chunk loading | Keep the 4GB heap and leave roughly 2GB for the operating system and non-heap memory |
| 8GB | Growing factory, more machines, and more simultaneous players | The setup guide suggests a heap of about 6GB after reserving roughly 2GB for the rest of the machine |
| 12GB | Late-game automation, RFTools dimensions, or a public server | Provides substantially more headroom, but does not guarantee a particular player count |
These are workload tiers rather than hard player limits. SkyFactory does not publish a controlled player-count benchmark, and memory use changes with loaded chunks, automation, dimensions, entities, and server configuration. Treat 6GB, 8GB, and 12GB as sensible starting allocations, then watch actual memory use and tick performance.

Can I run a SkyFactory 5 server with 4GB of RAM?
A 4GB heap can be used because it is the value shipped in the server files, but 4GB of total system RAM is not a comfortable configuration. The server README says 4GB is the recommended minimum memory for the server process and notes that less may run but is not optimal; it does not say that a 4GB computer has enough capacity for the heap plus the operating system.
If the host has only 4GB total, lowering the heap may prevent immediate out-of-memory errors, but it also reduces room for world data, mods, garbage collection, and concurrent activity. Swapping can make tick delays worse. For a dependable small server, choose at least 6GB total and keep the 4GB heap unless monitoring shows a reason to change it.
What CPU do I need for SkyFactory 5?
There is no official processor model, core-count minimum, or published benchmark for SkyFactory 5. The server guide explains that the main server tick is sensitive to single-thread performance, so a modern CPU with strong per-core speed is generally more useful than a large number of slower cores.
Why single-thread performance matters
Machines, Create contraptions, mob farms, redstone activity, and chunk loaders all add work to the server tick. Much of that tick workload cannot simply be divided across every available core. Additional cores still help the operating system, Java tasks, networking, and background services, but they do not replace strong per-core performance for the main simulation loop.
What CPU claims should you avoid?
Do not convert a processor name or core count into a guaranteed player number. Two servers with the same advertised CPU can behave differently because of clock limits, virtualization, background workloads, loaded chunks, and factory design. A responsible sizing process starts with a modern, high-single-thread CPU and then checks the server’s TPS and tick-time data as the world becomes more complex.
How much storage does a SkyFactory 5 server use?
The 5.0.8 server archive is just under 300MB and contains the mods, configurations, scripts, and installer material. That download size is not the disk requirement. The first launch adds Forge libraries; the world, logs, player data, updates, and backups then grow independently of the archive.

Simple Backups is enabled in the described configuration and can retain up to 25GB. Consequently, a nominal 40GB host disk can become tight once a world and its backup set have grown. A larger NVMe volume gives more practical headroom and faster world and backup operations, but the correct capacity depends on world age, backup retention, and how aggressively chunk loaders expand explored terrain.
- Reserve room for the server archive and Forge libraries before the first launch.
- Allow for a growing world directory, player data, logs, and crash reports.
- Account for the configured backup retention; the described setup may use up to 25GB for backups alone.
- Leave free space for upgrades and temporary files rather than filling the volume to its advertised capacity.
Which Minecraft, Forge and Java versions must players use?
Every client and the server should use the same SkyFactory 5.0.8 pack version, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge 47.4.0. The server requires 64-bit Java 17. A mismatch can stop a connection before gameplay begins or produce missing-mod and protocol errors that look like a network problem.

Run java -version on the machine that will host the server and confirm that it reports Java 17 and a 64-bit runtime. If the command resolves to another installed Java version, update the server startup script or the system path so the Forge launch process uses the intended runtime.
How do I install a SkyFactory 5.0.8 server?
Use the dedicated server package rather than the regular client archive. The supplied installer scripts are intended to create the Forge server environment and its required libraries.
- Download
SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zipfrom the SkyFactory 5 server-pack listing. - Extract it into a dedicated folder with write permission and enough free disk space for the world and backups.
- Run the included installer scripts to install Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge 47.4.0 and populate the server files.
- Install or select 64-bit Java 17, then start the server with that runtime.
- Open
user_jvm_args.txt. Keep-Xmx4Gon a 6GB machine; on a larger machine, increase the heap only while leaving memory for the operating system and Java outside the heap. - Start the server once, accept the Minecraft EULA in the generated configuration, and start it again.
- Give every player the SkyFactory 5.0.8 client with matching Minecraft and Forge versions before they connect.
The exact command generated by the installer can vary by operating system, so use the included script rather than substituting a generic Forge command. Keep the server folder, Java runtime, and backup location on storage with sufficient free capacity.
How should I size RAM for different SkyFactory workloads?
Fresh private world
Start with 6GB total RAM and the supplied 4GB heap. This suits a new world with a small group, provided you avoid loading large areas unnecessarily and do not run unrelated services on the same machine.
Growing factory
Move toward 8GB total as machines, farms, storage systems, and explored chunks accumulate. If you raise the heap to around 6GB, reserve approximately 2GB for the operating system and non-heap work, as the server guide recommends.

Late-game automation or extra dimensions
About 12GB total is a reasonable starting point when automation is dense, RFTools dimensions are active, or several players keep different areas loaded. This is additional headroom, not a promise that every setup will maintain a particular TPS or support a fixed number of players.
Public server
Use the 12GB tier as a planning baseline, then measure the actual workload. Public servers may need extra capacity for simultaneous exploration, chunk loaders, scheduled backups, monitoring, and other services that a private world does not run.
What should I monitor after the server starts?
Memory allocation alone cannot reveal whether the server is keeping up. Watch the relationship between heap use, garbage-collection pauses, loaded chunks, and TPS or tick-time readings while players perform the activities that matter to your world.
- Memory pressure: repeated near-maximum heap use, frequent long garbage-collection pauses, or out-of-memory errors indicate that the heap or total machine RAM is too small.
- Low TPS or long ticks: sustained tick delays point toward CPU or workload pressure, such as dense Create machinery, mob farms, or too many loaded chunks.
- Disk pressure: a nearly full volume can break backups and updates even when the server process still has free heap.
- Growth over time: compare the world and backup directories periodically so storage planning reflects the real retention policy rather than the initial archive size.
What are the most common setup failures?
The server exits immediately
Check the Java version and architecture first. SkyFactory 5.0.8 requires 64-bit Java 17; an older runtime, a 32-bit runtime, or a script pointing to the wrong installation can prevent Forge from starting.
Players receive missing-mod or version errors
Confirm that both sides use SkyFactory 5.0.8, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge 47.4.0. Replacing only the server files or only the client pack can create a version mismatch.
The machine becomes unresponsive
Check total physical RAM, not just -Xmx. A 4GB heap on a 4GB computer leaves no practical operating-system headroom; raise total RAM or lower the heap temporarily while investigating.
Backups fail despite a small server folder
Inspect free disk space and the backup directory. The archive is under 300MB, but retained backups can reach 25GB in the described configuration, and the world itself continues to expand.

What should I compare when choosing hardware or hosting?
Compare the resources that affect this pack’s real bottlenecks rather than choosing by a headline player count.
- Total RAM and the amount of heap you can configure independently.
- Single-thread CPU performance, not only the advertised core count.
- NVMe capacity, usable free space, and the provider’s backup-retention policy.
- Support for 64-bit Java 17, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge 47.4.0.
- Server location and network latency for the intended players.
- Access to logs, TPS or tick profiling, and controls for chunk-loader limits.
A plan advertised with 8GB may expose less usable memory if it includes other services or reserves part of the allocation. Ask whether the listed amount is total machine RAM or the configurable Java heap, and check how backups consume the same disk quota.
What is the practical recommendation?
For most private SkyFactory 5.0.8 worlds, choose a machine with 6GB total RAM, a modern CPU with strong single-thread performance, and more than the initial 300MB archive suggests—preferably an NVMe volume with room for the world and retained backups. Upgrade toward 8GB as the factory grows and toward roughly 12GB for heavy automation, extra dimensions, or public access. Keep Java 17 64-bit, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge 47.4.0 aligned across the server and every client.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does SkyFactory 5 need Java 17 on the client as well as the server?
Yes. The official project information lists Java 17 as required for the pack, and both the client and server should use 64-bit Java. Installing multiple Java versions can cause the launcher and the server script to select different runtimes, so verify each separately.
Will adding more players always fix lag if I add more RAM?
No. More RAM helps when the heap is genuinely full or garbage collection is stalling, but many slow ticks are caused by CPU-bound simulation. Factory layout, chunk loaders, entities, and automation can lower TPS even when unused memory remains.
How can I move a SkyFactory world to a larger disk without losing it?
Stop the server cleanly, copy the entire server directory including the world and configuration files, and verify that a backup can be opened before deleting the original. Update the startup script or service path to the new directory, then check that the backup destination still has the intended retention and free space.
Is an SSD required for a SkyFactory 5 server?
The pack does not publish a mandatory drive type. A fast SSD, especially NVMe, reduces contention during world saves, chunk generation, and backup activity; capacity and free space still matter more than the archive’s small initial size.
