What is SM64Plus?
SM64Plus is a fan-made PC fork of the Super Mario 64 PC port, focused on customization and quality-of-life changes. The project describes a broader set of features that includes more responsive controls, an improved camera, an extended moveset, extra modes, the option to keep playing in a level after collecting a star, and 60 FPS support through interpolation. What changed in v4.0.0?
The project changelog dates v4.0.0 to March 11, 2026. It lists the following additions and changes; these are the project’s release-note claims, not independent performance test results. SM64Plus changelog
- New toggles for V-Sync, MSAA anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, and N64-style blur.
- Corrected in-game text and more precise C-button camera rotation.
- An option to block non-XInput controllers.
- Resolution and aspect-ratio settings reworked, controller database support added, and the frame limiter changed.
- Direct3D 11 and Direct3D 12 support removed; graphics now use OpenGL, with SDL2 for windowing.
Is this an official Nintendo release?
No. SM64Plus is a community-made PC project, not a Nintendo announcement or a newly distributed Nintendo game. The project does not provide complete game binaries. Its repository says users need a prior copy of Super Mario 64 to extract the assets required to build the game. SM64Plus project repository

What do you need to build and play it?
SM64Plus is not a ready-to-run Nintendo download. The project directs users to get its launcher from MFGG; the documented process includes installing the launcher, starting the game through it, and waiting for the build to finish. - Obtain the SM64Plus launcher from the MFGG download linked by the project repository.
- Install and open the launcher, then start the game through it.
- Allow the launcher to build the game using assets extracted from your prior game copy.
The project FAQ’s version line still names v2.2.0, but that FAQ was last edited March 27, 2024. For the later v4.0.0 release date and changes, use the project changelog rather than treating the FAQ’s version line as current. SM64Plus project FAQ SM64Plus changelog
Does SM64Plus support controllers?
The v4.0.0 notes mention controller database support and an option to block controllers that do not use XInput. The project also describes controller mapping and support. How does it differ from Nintendo’s Switch option?
Nintendo UK lists Super Mario 64 in its Nintendo 64 Classics collection for Switch. Access requires a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo separately lists an N64 controller for purchase by Nintendo Switch Online members; that listing does not establish that the controller works with SM64Plus. These are separate ways to play: SM64Plus is not a Switch release, and the Nintendo Switch N64 controller should not be assumed compatible with the PC project.

Is SM64Plus still being developed?
The project FAQ, last edited March 27, 2024, calls the game “feature complete” and says significant new feature requests are no longer being considered, while leaving room for minor changes and bug fixes. That statement predates v4.0.0, so it describes the FAQ’s position at that time rather than the scope or future of later releases. SM64Plus project FAQ
