When Windows 11 is silent, start with the automated Audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Then verify the selected output, mute state, default playback device, and audio enhancements before moving to app settings, services, Device Manager, and manufacturer drivers. This order separates a simple routing mistake from a missing-device or driver problem while keeping the riskiest changes until last.
First, identify which kind of silence you have
The fastest fix depends on the scope of the failure. Play a known system sound, then test the affected game, video player, browser tab, or communications app. Note whether Windows lists the device you expect to use.

| What you observe | Most likely area | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| No sound anywhere, but an output device is listed | Wrong output, mute state, default-device setting, or enhancement conflict | Get Help troubleshooter, then Sound settings |
| System sounds work, but one app is silent | Per-app volume, per-app output, audio services, or an app-specific driver interaction | Volume mixer and Windows Audio services |
| There is no output device in Sound settings | Disabled, missing, outdated, or incorrectly loading audio driver; detection issue | Device Manager and driver repair |
| Sound stopped after an update or hardware change | Changed driver, output route, or device enumeration | Windows Update, then Device Manager or the manufacturer’s package |
Use reversible settings changes first. Driver removal, reinstalling packages, and hardware changes should come only after you have confirmed that the selected device and application are not muted.

- Start the automated diagnostic and answer each question about your symptoms and connected device.
- Allow it to apply a suggested fix when the description matches your setup.
- Play a system sound and test the app that originally failed.
If the troubleshooter reports that it cannot resolve the problem, keep the result in mind but continue with the manual checks below. A failure to repair automatically does not establish that the speakers or headphones are defective.
2. Confirm output routing, volume, and the default playback device
Windows can appear normal while sending audio to a monitor, a disconnected headset, a USB interface, or another endpoint. Check the route explicitly.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the device that should play sound: internal speakers, wired headphones, an HDMI display, a USB audio device, or another listed endpoint.
- Raise the volume slider and make sure the mute control is off. Also check a physical volume wheel, keyboard mute key, speaker power switch, and any inline headset control.
- Select More sound settings, open the Playback tab, right-click the intended device, and choose Set as default.
- Use the device’s test control, if shown, and then play audio from the application that failed.
For HDMI or DisplayPort audio, the display must be powered on and the display endpoint must be selected. For a USB headset or sound device, reconnect it directly to the computer and check whether a new output appears. For Bluetooth headphones, confirm they are connected for audio rather than merely paired, then select their playback endpoint in Sound settings.

3. Turn off audio enhancements
Enhancement effects can interfere with playback on some drivers and devices. Disable them on the output you selected, test, and leave them off only if that restores reliable sound.
- Return to Settings > System > Sound and open the selected output device.
- Find Audio enhancements in the device’s advanced properties.
- Set it to Off.
- Play audio again. If there is still no sound, continue to the next section rather than repeatedly changing unrelated effects.
4. Fix silence in one app while other sounds work
If system sounds play but a game, browser, media player, or chat application does not, use the per-app controls before changing drivers. Windows stores separate volume and output choices for individual applications.
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, locate the silent application.
- Make sure its volume is raised and it is not muted.
- Check the app’s Output device and select the same speakers or headphones you verified in the main Sound page.
- Close and reopen the application, then test again.
If the app still has no audio, restart the Windows audio services. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. In the Services window, right-click Windows Audio and choose Restart. Then right-click Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and choose Restart. Reopen the application and test. Do not disable either service; they are required for normal playback.

5. When Windows says no audio output device is installed
A missing output in Sound settings is different from a muted speaker. Microsoft identifies missing, outdated, disabled, or incorrectly loading drivers as causes of an undetected output device. Check whether Windows can see the hardware before installing anything.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- If your audio device is listed and disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device when that option is available.
- If it is not listed, select View > Show hidden devices.
- Then choose Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Check Sound settings again for a newly detected output.
A warning icon, an unknown device, or a device that repeatedly disappears points toward a driver-loading or hardware-detection problem. Record the exact device name shown in Device Manager; it helps you select the correct package from the computer or sound-card manufacturer.
Install the manufacturer’s current audio driver
- Identify the exact computer model or sound-card model.
- Open the manufacturer’s official support page and locate the audio driver for your Windows 11 edition and model.
- Download the package intended for that model, not a similarly named product.
- Run the installer, follow its prompts, and restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > System > Sound and verify that the expected output is listed and selected.
If the manufacturer provides more than one audio component, install only packages that match your model and the documented audio hardware. Avoid using an unrelated driver simply because its name contains a familiar codec or device brand.

6. Update or reinstall the audio driver safely
Windows Update is Microsoft’s preferred first source for audio-driver updates. Use it before manually replacing a driver.
Try Windows Update first
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates, including optional driver updates when Windows presents them for your system.
- Restart the computer even if Windows does not explicitly require it, then test playback.
Use Device Manager if Windows Update does not help
- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device and choose Update driver.
- Allow Windows to search for an available driver, then restart if one is installed.
- If the device remains faulty, right-click it again and choose Uninstall device. Confirm only the audio device you intend to repair, restart Windows, and let Windows reinstall the driver.
- If the manufacturer package is incompatible or unavailable, use the Device Manager option to select the generic Windows audio driver, then restart and test.
Uninstalling a driver is more disruptive than changing a volume setting. Before doing it, save open work, note the device name, and make sure you can access the computer manufacturer’s support page from another device if the original package is needed.

- For internal speakers, confirm the computer is not in a hardware mute mode and that the speaker grille is not blocked by a physical switch or dock setting.
- For wired headphones, push the plug fully into the intended jack and test another pair or another jack if available.
- For USB audio, reconnect the device, try a different USB port, and watch whether Device Manager refreshes when it is connected.
- For HDMI or DisplayPort, verify that the cable carries audio and that the display’s own volume is raised.
- For Bluetooth, charge the headphones, reconnect them, and select their stereo or playback endpoint rather than a communications-only endpoint when both are listed.
These tests are useful because they distinguish a silent endpoint from a Windows-wide failure. They do not prove that a replacement speaker, headset, or adapter is required.
8. Choose the next step from the symptom
| After testing | Next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Output appears, volume is raised, and every app is silent | Disable enhancements, then update or reinstall the driver | The endpoint is present, so routing and driver behavior are the remaining priorities |
| Only one app is silent | Correct Volume mixer settings, restart the two audio services, and reopen the app | Per-app routing or service state can differ from system playback |
| No output appears in Sound settings | Enable or reveal the device in Device Manager, scan for hardware changes, then install the model-specific driver | Windows is not exposing the endpoint to playback controls |
| The problem began after a driver or Windows update | Check Windows Update, then reinstall the correct manufacturer driver | The timing makes a changed or incorrectly loaded driver more plausible |
| Another known-good output works | Focus on the original endpoint, its connection, and its driver | Windows playback is functioning through at least one device |
9. When the problem is not solved
Repeat the test with one output at a time and write down which devices appear, which applications fail, and whether the issue changes after a restart. That record prevents repeatedly applying the same setting and gives the computer or sound-card manufacturer the information needed for model-specific support.
If Device Manager cannot detect the audio hardware after showing hidden devices and scanning for changes, the remaining possibilities include a disabled device at the firmware or hardware level, a failed connection, or a model-specific driver problem. The Windows procedures above cannot confirm a physical failure; use the manufacturer’s documented diagnostics or support process for that exact computer or sound card.
