Sons of the Forest Building Guide: Base Basics and Starter Designs

Build a reliable first camp in Sons of the Forest with a compact shelter, accessible storage, practical defense, and Kelvin-assisted construction.

The safest way to start a base in Sons of the Forest is to build small, get a usable shelter or platform working, add nearby storage, and defend only the approaches you actually use. The Guide Book (also called the Survival Book) is the control center: its prefab pages let you place a construction ghost and fill it with materials, while its custom pages show how to assemble structures from individual logs and components.

Start with a compact footprint near a practical resource route. Expand after the first shelter works, and use Kelvin for repetitive hauling, completion, repairs, and—on current versions—drawn defensive walls. Treat ordinary walls as delay and channeling, not an absolute barrier: the custom-building reference notes that cannibals and some mutants can scale them.

What to build first

Your first camp has three jobs: give you a dependable place to sleep, keep materials within a short carrying distance, and force enemies to approach through a space you can watch. A tiny footprint meets all three goals with less logging, less repair work, and fewer structural mistakes.

  1. Place a shelter, platform, or similarly compact blueprint. Put it close to a route you already use for logs, sticks, food, or water rather than in an isolated scenic location.
  2. Add storage beside the work area. Keep log, stick, and other holders where you can reach them without walking around the entire structure.
  3. Build a short defensive line at the exposed approach. Do not enclose a large compound until you know which side enemies use and how much material your routine can supply.
  4. Expand only after the first shelter is usable. A working small camp is easier to repair and relocate than an ambitious half-finished fortress.

This order is a practical consequence of the game’s two construction modes and its material-handling demands. It is not a fixed quest sequence; choose the location that keeps your regular resource trips short and leaves a clear path for carrying logs.

How the Guide Book construction modes work

Prefab blueprints

Open the Guide Book’s prefab view to choose a predefined structure. Placing one creates a translucent construction ghost. You then supply the listed materials until the ghost becomes a finished building. Prefabs are useful when you want a known shape quickly, especially for a first shelter, a small platform, or a repeatable utility structure.

A prefab also gives you a visual boundary before you commit every log. Walk around the ghost and check that its entrance, stairs, and storage side will remain reachable. If the footprint blocks your hauling route, move the ghost before filling it.

Custom construction

The custom view replaces the ghost with illustrated, component-by-component instructions. It uses full logs and split logs for foundations, floors, ramps, stairs, doors, and walls. Custom building gives you more control over height, openings, and the route enemies must take, but every alignment decision is yours.

Use custom pieces after you understand how logs meet and where supports are required. A small custom platform or short wall is a safer learning project than a full custom compound. The basic-wall reference describes walls as six logs tall; it also warns that cannibals and certain mutants can scale them.

A step-by-step starter base

1. Choose a compact footprint

Look for a practical resource route and enough level space for a shelter or platform. Leave a visible approach on at least one side so you can see arrivals and carry logs without squeezing between obstacles. Avoid planning a huge perimeter before you know the ground’s support behavior.

2. Place the first structure

In the Guide Book, choose a small prefab or follow the custom instructions for a simple shelter or raised platform. Rotate the ghost or initial supports so the entrance faces your routine approach. Confirm that you can reach the sleeping or work area without crossing the entire footprint.

3. Fill the structure in manageable trips

Bring the required logs and components in batches. Keep holders close to the build so you are not repeatedly crossing the site. If you are using custom construction, complete one stable section before extending another; this makes alignment errors easier to spot and repair.

4. Add storage along one side

Place log and stick holders beside the shelter, not behind a wall or down a long path. Storage should support the next repair or expansion job while preserving a clear carrying lane. A compact row is easier to keep supplied than scattered holders.

5. Mark the exposed approach

Watch where enemies actually arrive during your first nights. Put a short defensive line on that side rather than drawing a perimeter around unused ground. The goal is time and direction: a wall can slow an approach or channel it into a visible lane.

6. Assign Kelvin once materials are accessible

After placing a blueprint and making its logs or holders reachable, give Kelvin a finishing or maintain-base task. Check the structure when you return from an expedition; automation reduces repetitive work but does not replace choosing the footprint or inspecting weak approaches.

Three starter designs that work

Design Material and build burden Expansion Approach control Best use
Compact square shelter Low; few walls and a short carrying route Add storage or a short perimeter one side at a time Good visibility if the exposed side remains open Lowest-risk first camp
Raised platform starter Low to medium; requires careful support and log alignment Add stairs, storage, and a limited perimeter around the platform Height improves observation, but stairs become a focal approach Players who want a small work-and-sleep area above ground
Perimeter-first camp Medium to high; the wall line consumes early logs Easy to extend only if the first line follows the active area Strongest control of a chosen approach, not a guarantee against climbers Locations receiving frequent attacks

These are patterns rather than blueprints. The compact square minimizes material and repair time. The raised platform concentrates work and sleeping space while leaving room below or beside it for later additions. The perimeter-first pattern is justified when attacks are frequent, but keep the enclosed area small enough that you can finish and maintain it.

Building with logs: what custom mode demands

Custom construction uses full and split logs as structural components. Foundations and floors establish the footprint; ramps and stairs determine how you move through it; doors and walls close or shape the route. Because each piece is placed individually, the order matters: establish a stable base, then connect vertical and access pieces to it.

  • Foundations and floors: keep the first rectangle or platform small so supports remain visible.
  • Ramps and stairs: place them where logs can be carried without colliding with storage or a wall line.
  • Doors and openings: preserve a deliberate entrance rather than sealing every side; an entrance you can watch is more useful than a maze.
  • Walls: the basic reference describes a six-log height. That height delays many approaches but can be scaled by cannibals and some mutants.

If a custom piece does not align, stop extending the section and correct the nearest support first. Continuing to stack on a bad connection increases the amount you must dismantle or repair. Prototype one corner, one stair, or one short wall before copying the pattern around a camp.

Defense: delay, channel, and inspect

Why a wall is not a guarantee

Ordinary walls should be treated as delay and channeling devices. The custom-building reference explicitly notes that cannibals and certain mutants can scale basic walls, so a completed wall does not make the enclosed space invulnerable. Keep sightlines, leave yourself a monitored entrance, and expect to intervene when an enemy reaches or bypasses the line.

Where to put the first defensive line

Draw or build it across the approach you actually use and the side enemies most often test. A short line protects the working area while you learn the terrain. Extending a wall around unused ground increases logging and creates more surfaces to repair without improving the space you occupy.

How to maintain the perimeter

After an expedition, walk the full line rather than checking only the entrance. Look for damage, a sharpened-wall section that has become ineffective, and any new route around the end. A wall that ends beside a climbable slope or open flank may redirect enemies rather than stop them.

What Kelvin can do for your base

Patch 15 added Kelvin commands for repairing structures, sharpening defensive walls, and maintaining the base. The maintain-base command can fill holders to capacity, complete in-progress structures, repair damage, and sharpen placed defensive walls. These actions are most useful when your holders and unfinished pieces are accessible from a compact camp.

Patch 16 later added drawn defensive-wall structures that Kelvin can complete. The official Patch 16 announcement states: “We also added a procedural defensive wall placement system so you can now just draw out where you want the walls and let Kelvin finish them.” Use that system for a short, controlled perimeter: draw the line around the space you actively occupy, make logs available, assign Kelvin to finish it, and inspect the result before relying on it.

  1. Place the shelter, platform, or wall blueprint in the Guide Book.
  2. Put the required logs in holders or leave a clear path for hauling.
  3. Assign Kelvin to finish the structure or maintain the base.
  4. Leave him room to reach the unfinished sections; do not block the only route with storage or another wall.
  5. When you return, verify that the structure is complete, holders are replenished, damage is repaired, and the defensive line is sharpened where applicable.

Kelvin reduces repetitive hauling and upkeep. He does not decide where the entrance belongs, identify a weak flank, or make a climbable wall impossible to bypass.

Choosing between prefab and custom building

Question Prefab answer Custom answer
How quickly can I see the final footprint? The construction ghost shows the predefined shape before you supply all materials. You establish the shape piece by piece and must judge alignment as you go.
How much control do I have? Limited to placement and orientation of the selected design. High control over log placement, openings, ramps, stairs, and walls.
Which is easier for a first shelter? Usually easier because the structure is already defined. Best for learning the system with a small platform, corner, or short wall.
How does Kelvin fit? He can complete accessible in-progress structures and maintain the base. He can perform the same maintenance tasks, but poorly accessible custom pieces still need a sensible layout.

Choose a prefab when speed and a predictable footprint matter more than exact geometry. Choose custom construction when you need a specific approach, height, opening, or compact fit that a predefined design cannot provide. Mixing both is practical: use a prefab for the sleeping area and custom pieces for storage access or a short defensive lane.

Update and version notes

Patch 16 was released on January 15, 2025. Its additions included three raft structures, a mooring post, Knight V and glider holders, and drawn defensive-wall structures. The official announcement connects the drawn-wall system directly to Kelvin’s ability to finish it.

A current-version summary lists Patch 16 Hotfix 3 as released on October 3, 2025. Building behavior and interaction labels can change between patches, platforms, or hotfixes, so verify the Guide Book controls and Kelvin commands against the version installed on your system. The construction principles in this guide—compact footprint, accessible storage, controlled approaches, and regular inspection—remain useful even when a button prompt changes.

Troubleshooting common starter-base problems

Kelvin is not finishing the wall

Confirm that the wall is a supported drawn defensive-wall structure, that logs or holders are reachable, and that Kelvin has an unobstructed path. Move storage or temporary obstacles away from the unfinished line, then reassign the finishing or maintain-base command.

The camp takes too long to repair

The footprint is probably larger than your routine can supply. Stop expanding, consolidate storage beside the active shelter, and repair the occupied section before adding another wing or outer wall.

Enemies appear inside the perimeter

Check for a climbable wall section, an open end, a side route around the line, or a slope that lets enemies bypass the intended approach. Because some enemies can scale ordinary walls, add visibility and a monitored entrance rather than assuming another identical wall will solve the problem.

Logs are difficult to carry into the build

Reposition holders along the shortest clear route and keep the entrance aligned with that lane. A compact footprint is valuable partly because every additional corner increases carrying distance and collision points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The custom structure keeps misaligning

Return to the nearest foundation or support and correct it before adding more pieces. Practice with one corner or a short platform, then repeat the alignment only after the first section is stable.

Starter-base checklist

  • Choose a resource route and a compact, workable building area.
  • Open the Guide Book and decide whether a prefab ghost or custom instructions fit the job.
  • Finish a shelter or platform before planning a large compound.
  • Place log, stick, and other holders beside the active work area.
  • Keep a clear lane for carrying materials and for Kelvin’s access.
  • Observe enemy approaches before drawing or building a long defensive line.
  • Use a short wall to delay and channel; do not treat it as guaranteed protection.
  • Assign Kelvin to finish or maintain the base after materials are accessible.
  • Inspect the perimeter after expeditions for damage, sharpened sections, open ends, and bypass routes.
  • Expand only when the existing shelter, storage, and defense can be maintained comfortably.
