Sons of Valhalla is a single-player Viking strategy game for players who want to fight on the front line as well as command troops and build toward fortress assaults. Its mix of side-scrolling combat, roguelike runs and base-building gives it a distinctive hook; whether it works for you depends on your tolerance for repetition and the controls. Steam’s review snapshot is Mixed, and individual players praise the pixel art and combat while others criticize repetition, balance and length.
What kind of game is Sons of Valhalla?
Steam lists Pixel Chest as both developer and publisher, with a release date of April 5, 2024. The game is a single-player Viking Age campaign in which you lead Thorald Olavson on a quest for vengeance. Rather than choosing between an action game and a strategy game, it combines direct, side-scrolling combat with troop recruitment, resource management, fortress building and sieges.
According to the Steam product description, you choose a route through towns and battles, buy equipment, upgrade troops and construct buildings and siege engines. The developers describe the game as a blend of side-scrolling combat, roguelike strategy and base building. That description explains the premise, but it is a product claim rather than an independent assessment of how well the systems work together.
What do the reviews say?
Steam’s store page showed all-time user reviews as “Mixed”: 67% positive from 833 Steam-purchaser reviews when retrieved on October 8, 2026. Steam also displayed a Metacritic score of 73; that is the score shown on the Steam page, not an independently verified Metacritic result. Both review counts and ratings can change, so check the live listing for the current snapshot.

Individual Steam community reviews illustrate why opinions differ. Positive reviewers point to the pixel art, combat, runes and campaign, with one describing the experience as a compact, enjoyable blend of tactics and action. Critical examples cite repetitive stages, clunky or restricted controls, balance or bug frustrations and a short experience. Those are player accounts, not proof that every player will encounter the same problems or a representative survey of the whole audience.
How runs, combat and progression fit together
Direct fighting alongside troop command
You control Thorald in side-scrolling battles while also recruiting and improving warriors. The structure asks you to engage with combat directly and invest in forces and defenses that support attacks on enemy strongholds. If you mainly want an indirect strategy game in which you watch units fight, the hands-on combat is an important part of the fit; if you want a straightforward action platformer, the resource and army-management layer is just as central.

Route choices and siege preparation
The official description says that a campaign route takes you through towns and battles, where you can make purchases and build up your force. Structures and siege engines are part of the preparation for fortress assaults, alongside open-field skirmishes. This gives the campaign a strategic layer between fights, but the available descriptions do not establish how much variety each route or siege provides in practice.
Defeat and persistent unlocks
A failed invasion resets the run, while runestones can permanently unlock warriors and equipment for later attempts. This is the game’s roguelike progression hook: a loss sends you back to begin again, but some progress carries forward. Players who enjoy repeating a campaign with new options may value that loop; players who dislike replaying stages should weigh the reported repetition complaints carefully.

Who is likely to enjoy it—and who may not?
- A promising fit: You like pixel-art action, want to fight directly, and enjoy layering troop upgrades and siege planning over repeated attempts.
- Consider carefully: You are sensitive to control feel, balance issues or bugs; some individual reviewers report frustration in those areas.
- Probably a poor fit: You want a long campaign with little repetition, or prefer either pure action or hands-off strategy rather than a combination of the two. Some individual players describe the experience as short or repetitive.
Steam community reviewers sometimes compare the game with the Kingdom series, but that is a player comparison, not evidence that the games are equivalent. A useful comparison is to ask how much direct combat, troop-command depth, repeat-play tolerance, campaign length and persistent progression you want—and whether the current price in your regional Steam store makes that package worthwhile for you.

Verdict: Is Sons of Valhalla worth it?
Sons of Valhalla is worth considering if the combination of Viking-themed side-scrolling fights, troop upgrades, fortress building and persistent unlocks is what you want. The available evidence is less reassuring for buyers who prioritize smooth controls, minimal repetition or a long campaign: those concerns appear in individual player reviews, though they are not universal findings. With Steam’s snapshot at Mixed, it is sensible to check the current user reviews and price in your region—and verify the live demo listing if you want to try before buying.
