Engadget attributed the remark to Ken Kutaragi, quoting him as saying: “We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else.”
What Kutaragi was reported to have said
In a July 6, 2005 post, Engadget reported that Kutaragi made the comments in a recent interview with Japanese economic website Toyo Keizai. Engadget also reproduced his description of the intended reaction: “I will work more hours to buy one”. The original Toyo Keizai interview has not been independently checked here, so these words should be understood as Engadget’s account of the interview.

Why the headline sounds provocative
Engadget’s headline, “Sony wants you to earn that PlayStation 3!”, and its “Get a job!” punchline are editorial framing. They are not part of Kutaragi’s quoted words. The reported remarks suggest an ambition to make the console so desirable that buyers would make an effort to afford it; without the complete interview context, they do not establish that Kutaragi was dismissing affordability or describing a company policy.
Did the report say how much the PS3 would cost?
No. The post raises the question of what the PS3 might cost and what an average gamer’s limit would be, but the retrieved text gives no price. It cannot be used as evidence of the console’s launch price or of Sony’s pricing plans. Read the original Engadget post for the report and its framing.
