The studio rebuilt Shadow of the Colossus for PS4, but the sources reporting Sony’s decision do not establish the exact date Bluepoint actually ceased operations.
What Sony announced about Bluepoint Games
On February 19, 2026, Sony confirmed that Bluepoint Games would close the following month. That is the announced plan, not confirmation of a specific completed shutdown date. Game Developer reported Sony’s confirmation, while Gematsu reproduced an internal email from Hermen Hulst, CEO of SIE’s Studio Business Group, saying the studio would close in March.
Sony’s spokesperson praised Bluepoint’s technical work, saying the team had delivered “exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community.” That recognition did not change the closure decision.
Why Sony said it was closing the studio
In the internal email reproduced by Gematsu, Hulst described a difficult environment for making games sustainably. He cited rising development costs, slower industry growth, changing player behavior and broader economic headwinds. Those are Sony’s stated considerations, not independently measured findings or a complete accounting of the decision.

It is more accurate to describe the decision as part of Sony’s business review amid the pressures Hulst listed than to assign it to an unverified project-specific cause.
Bluepoint’s connection to Shadow of the Colossus
Bluepoint was closely associated with the PS4 remake, but it did not create the original game. Sony’s official US PlayStation Store listing says the PS4 version was rebuilt by Bluepoint Games and Japan Studio.
Bluepoint’s contribution involved more than updating the game’s appearance. In a 2019 GDC presentation, technical director Peter Dalton described the team’s effort to create reusable technology and processes that could evolve across projects. He said the original game’s gameplay systems were largely retained, while Bluepoint Engine systems handled platform-focused work and visual presentation. Dalton’s GDC presentation offers a technical account of that approach.
