Update: Sony did not announce a full acquisition of Kadokawa. Reuters reported preliminary takeover talks on November 19, 2024, but the publicly announced outcome was a strategic alliance and minority investment. On January 7, 2025, Sony became Kadokawa’s largest shareholder with an approximately 10% stake—including shares it already held—not its owner.
That means Sony did not buy FromSoftware outright, and there was no announcement that Elden Ring or Dark Souls would become PlayStation exclusives.

What Reuters reported in November 2024
Reuters reported on November 19, 2024, that Sony Group Corporation was in talks to acquire Kadokawa, the Japanese media company associated internationally with FromSoftware, Elden Ring, and Dark Souls. The report described private, preliminary discussions—not a signed deal or guaranteed formal offer.
Sony could still have abandoned the proposal, changed its terms, or decided not to make an offer. The story was therefore accurately described at the time as Sony being in talks to acquire Kadokawa, not as Sony having bought it.
#1 Best Overall
- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
The report attracted particular attention from games fans because FromSoftware is Kadokawa’s best-known gaming asset outside Japan. But the potential transaction was broader than a proposed purchase of a game studio.
Reuters’ original report was later summarized by Bloomberg Law.
What Kadokawa actually is
Kadokawa is a Japanese media and publishing conglomerate, not simply a video-game publisher. Its businesses span books, manga, light novels, anime, films, games, video production, and the development of intellectual property across multiple formats.

Kadokawa can develop a novel or manga into an anime, game, film, television project, merchandise, or other licensed product. Its value therefore includes a large library of intellectual property and the ability to adapt that IP internationally.
Kadokawa’s gaming portfolio includes FromSoftware, as well as companies including Spike Chunsoft, Acquire, and Gotcha Gotcha Games. Kadokawa investor materials identify FromSoftware as the developer behind the Dark Souls series and Elden Ring, while also describing the group’s broader game-development and localization operations.
Where FromSoftware fits
Kadokawa is the parent and controlling shareholder of FromSoftware. FromSoftware develops games including Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Armored Core.
That relationship should not be simplified into “Kadokawa owns every right to every FromSoftware game.” Development, publishing, distribution, trademark, licensing, and adaptation rights can be divided among different companies and contracts.

FromSoftware’s official company page lists Kadokawa, Sixjoy Hong Kong, and Sony Interactive Entertainment among its main shareholders. It also lists Sony Interactive Entertainment, Microsoft Japan, Nintendo, Bandai Namco, Capcom, and Kadokawa among its major business partners.
That distinction matters. Sony Group Corporation is the parent company of several major businesses, including Sony Interactive Entertainment, Sony Pictures, and Sony Music. Sony Interactive Entertainment already had a minority investment in FromSoftware, but that did not make FromSoftware a wholly owned PlayStation studio.
What Sony and Kadokawa announced instead
On December 19, 2024, Sony and Kadokawa announced a strategic capital and business alliance, rather than a full acquisition.
Under the agreement, Sony agreed to purchase 12,054,100 newly issued Kadokawa shares for approximately ¥50 billion. The share acquisition was scheduled for—and the documented transaction took place on—January 7, 2025.

Including Sony’s earlier Kadokawa shares, the investment gave Sony approximately 10% of Kadokawa and made it Kadokawa’s largest shareholder. Sony also said it did not plan to acquire additional Kadokawa shares at that time.

The related Sony SEC filing contains the transaction details and the attached announcement.
Why Sony wanted a closer relationship with Kadokawa
The alliance fits Sony’s wider strategy of connecting its gaming, film, television, music, anime, and distribution businesses. The goal was not stated as simply obtaining a PlayStation-exclusive game studio.
Sony and Kadokawa identified several areas for cooperation:

- Live-action films and television dramas based on Kadokawa intellectual property
- Co-produced anime projects
- Global distribution of Kadokawa anime through Sony’s entertainment businesses
- Expanded publishing and distribution of Kadokawa games
- Joint investment in content and intellectual property
- Creator discovery and development
- Virtual-production talent development
A full acquisition would have placed Kadokawa and its businesses under Sony’s broader corporate ownership. The alliance offered a way to deepen cooperation and gain strategic influence without announcing that Sony had purchased the entire company.
Does Sony now own FromSoftware?
No—not based on the announced transaction. Sony became Kadokawa’s largest shareholder, but an approximately 10% stake is not the same as majority ownership or operational control.
Sony’s investment can give it meaningful influence over strategic discussions and create a closer relationship with Kadokawa and FromSoftware. It may also make cooperation on games, anime, film, and other adaptations easier. But the official announcement described Sony as Kadokawa’s largest shareholder, not as its controlling shareholder or owner.
The Kadokawa investor-relations materials also show why the company should not be reduced to FromSoftware: its businesses cover publishing, anime, games, and other media operations.
Will Elden Ring or Dark Souls become PlayStation exclusives?
There was no such announcement.
Sony’s reported acquisition talks concerned Kadokawa, not an announced purchase of FromSoftware by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The December alliance did not say that existing Elden Ring or Dark Souls games would be removed from Xbox, PC, or other platforms. It also did not announce that future FromSoftware games would automatically be exclusive to PlayStation.
Even a full acquisition of Kadokawa would not automatically change every existing publishing or distribution agreement. Previously released games can remain subject to contracts involving developers, publishers, licensors, and platform holders. A future exclusive would require separate decisions about development, financing, publishing, and distribution.

- ELDEN RING, developed by FromSoftware Inc. and produced by BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc., is a fantasy action-RPG and FromSoftware's largest game to date, set within a world full of mystery and peril

- Traverse the breathtaking world on foot or on horseback, alone or online with other players, and fully immerse yourself in the grassy plains, suffocating swamps, spiraling mountains, and foreboding castles
- Create your character in FromSoftware’s refi ned action-RPG and defi ne your playstyle by experimenting with a wide variety of weapons, magical abilities, and skills found throughout the world
- Charge into battle, pick off enemies one-by-one using stealth, or even call upon allies for aid - many options are at your disposal as you decide how to approach exploration and combat
That is especially important for FromSoftware, whose official business-partner list includes companies beyond Sony. Bandai Namco, for example, has been a major publishing and distribution partner for several FromSoftware games, including Elden Ring and Dark Souls titles.
So the evidence supports a closer Sony-Kadokawa relationship—not the claim that Sony owns every FromSoftware franchise or that Elden Ring is becoming a PlayStation exclusive.
What the 10% stake means—and what it does not
Becoming the largest shareholder can be strategically significant even without majority control. Sony may have greater access to Kadokawa’s plans, more influence in strategic discussions, and stronger opportunities to coordinate content development and global distribution.
However, “largest shareholder” does not mean “sole decision-maker.” The announced stake does not establish that Sony controls Kadokawa’s day-to-day operations or FromSoftware’s creative and business decisions.
The investment also leaves open questions about the long-term relationship. Sony could potentially seek a larger stake in the future, but the announcement itself said Sony did not plan to acquire additional Kadokawa shares at that time. The specific adaptations, games, anime projects, or distribution deals that may result also remain matters for separate announcements.
The bottom line on Sony, Kadokawa, and FromSoftware
The original story was real, but its headline can become misleading if it is treated as the final outcome. Sony explored a possible Kadokawa takeover in November 2024. Instead, Sony and Kadokawa announced a strategic capital and business alliance in December, completed through a January 2025 share issuance.

It did not publicly complete a full acquisition of Kadokawa in the transaction documented here, did not buy FromSoftware outright, and did not announce automatic PlayStation exclusivity for Elden Ring or Dark Souls.
The practical significance is closer cooperation around Japanese intellectual property and media—not an immediate change in who can play FromSoftware’s games.
