Sony may be negotiating privileged access to AMD’s RDNA 5 graphics technology for a future native-play handheld, but there is no confirmed exclusivity contract, product announcement or final chip design. The claim comes from a qualified Digital Foundry report, while separate leaks describe a device codenamed Canis with six Zen 6-class CPU cores, 16 RDNA 5 compute units, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 15–25W power range. Sony has confirmed investment in its next platform, not this handheld.
Does Sony really have an RDNA 5 exclusive?
Not in any publicly verified sense. Digital Foundry journalist Richard Leadbetter said there had been “some behind the scene discussions that Sony has an exclusive of sorts on RDNA5 for handheld with it’s mobile device that’s coming.” The wording describes a reported commercial arrangement, not a signed agreement that AMD or Sony has announced.

“Exclusive of sorts” could mean early access, preferential scheduling or a semi-custom design relationship rather than AMD preventing every other customer from using RDNA 5. No public document identifies the term, duration, geographic scope or products covered.
Why a semi-custom deal is plausible
Notebookcheck’s reporting offers one possible explanation: AMD may be selective about custom handheld silicon and may expect sufficiently large production commitments before taking on a design. That is an interpretation in the reporting, not an AMD-confirmed policy. A large PlayStation installed base could make a bespoke chip more commercially practical than a low-volume handheld project, but the available evidence does not prove Sony has met any such requirement.

What is Project Canis?
Canis is the name attached to leaked specifications for an alleged Sony handheld. Reports dated September 17 and October 26, 2026 describe an AMD-based system, but none of these specifications has been tested publicly or confirmed by Sony or AMD.
| Component or feature | Reported detail | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Six AMD cores: four Zen 6c and two Zen 6 LP | Insider claim; no official specification |
| GPU | 16 RDNA 5 compute units | Insider claim; performance is unverified |
| Memory | 24GB LPDDR5X on a 192-bit bus | Insider claim; capacity and bandwidth are not independently tested |
| Power target | 15–25W TDP | Reported range, not a confirmed operating profile |
| Launch timing | Late 2027 to early 2028 | Leaked window; Sony has not announced a date |
| Compatibility | PS4 and PS5 backward compatibility reportedly planned | Leak only; game-by-game support is unknown |
The split CPU arrangement, memory bus and power range would be meaningful design choices if genuine. They still do not establish clock speeds, cooling requirements, battery capacity, storage, display resolution or retail pricing.

There is no responsible performance ranking yet. Compute-unit count and a new GPU architecture are useful clues, but sustained performance also depends on clocks, memory behavior, thermal limits, drivers, game optimization and how long the battery can support the target power level.

A 15–25W envelope suggests a device designed around handheld thermals rather than unrestricted console or desktop power. The reported 24GB memory capacity could help a system reserve resources for demanding games, but capacity alone does not reveal usable bandwidth, operating-system allocation or frame-rate targets. Independent benchmarks and final firmware would be needed before comparing Canis with PC handhelds or any future Xbox device.
What comparisons will matter once specifications are official?
- Whether the chip is genuinely semi-custom or a standard AMD design.
- RDNA 5 compute resources, clock behavior and sustained power draw.
- Memory bandwidth, cooling design and battery endurance under load.
- Native game support versus streaming or compatibility layers.
- Launch price, software support and the number of games optimized for the hardware.
How is this different from PlayStation Portal?
PlayStation Portal is a current Remote Play and cloud-streaming device. It is not the rumored RDNA 5 handheld and should not be treated as evidence that Sony has already shipped native PlayStation handheld hardware.
| PlayStation Portal | Rumored Canis handheld | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary function | Remote Play and cloud streaming | Reported native-play system |
| RDNA 5 graphics | Not identified as an RDNA 5 device | 16 RDNA 5 compute units reportedly planned |
| Local PS4/PS5 game execution | Not the product’s stated role | Backward compatibility is a leak, not a confirmation |
| Availability | Current product | No confirmed retail listing |
| Price and launch date for Canis | Not applicable | Not stated by Sony |
That distinction matters: Portal relies on a PlayStation console or supported cloud service for game rendering, while the rumored device would need its own CPU, GPU, memory and cooling system.

What has Sony officially confirmed?
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s June 5, 2026 Games & Network Services meeting summary says: “This includes the next generation of the platform and related content.” The statement also says Sony wants to anticipate changing play habits and broaden access. It does not name a handheld, Canis, RDNA 5, a price or a release date.
The same corporate update reported more than 93 million PS5 units and 125 million monthly active accounts as of March 2026. Those figures show the scale of the platform a future handheld could serve, but they are not evidence that a handheld has been approved for sale.
When could Sony’s handheld launch?
The late-2027 to early-2028 window comes from leaked reporting published through October 26, 2026. It is not a Sony schedule. Hardware development, software testing, manufacturing commitments and certification can all move a rumored window, so there is no reliable launch date until Sony issues an announcement.

Reports also claim PS4 and PS5 backward compatibility. Until Sony explains how compatibility works, readers should not assume every game will run locally, that enhancements will be automatic or that the entire PS5 library will be supported.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What would confirm the RDNA 5 story?
Several pieces of evidence would turn the rumor into a verifiable product report:
- Sony naming the handheld or Canis in an official hardware announcement.
- AMD confirming the RDNA 5 architecture or a semi-custom partnership.
- Published specifications covering CPU, GPU, memory, power and storage.
- A demonstrated native game running on final or production-representative hardware.
- A launch date, regional availability and retail price.
Until those appear, the strongest defensible description is that Sony may have sought a strategic AMD graphics advantage for an unannounced handheld. The reported specifications and timing remain insider claims, and no performance conclusion can be drawn from them.

- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. Frequently Asked Questions
Could AMD’s reported arrangement stop Microsoft or other companies from using RDNA 5?
There is no evidence of a blanket industry exclusivity clause. The phrase “exclusive of sorts” could describe priority access or a custom design limited to one product, but the commercial terms have not been disclosed.
Will every PS5 game work on the rumored handheld?
No compatibility list exists. Even if backward compatibility is included, support may depend on game patches, performance profiles, control schemes and whether a title is approved for local execution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes 24GB of memory guarantee better handheld performance?
No. Memory capacity is only one part of the design; bandwidth, GPU clocks, thermal limits, system-reserved memory and software optimization determine how much of that capacity benefits games.
Should I buy PlayStation Portal if I want a native Sony handheld?
Portal serves Remote Play and cloud-streaming use cases today, but it is not a substitute for the unannounced device described in the leaks. Anyone seeking local game execution should wait for Sony to explain whether and when such hardware exists.
