Those prices were later superseded: Sony’s April 2, 2026 prices are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for PS5 Pro.
How much did Sony raise PS5 prices in 2025?
The August 20, 2025 announcement took effect the next day. Sony Interactive Entertainment raised the U.S. recommended retail price of each then-current PS5 console model by $50:
| Console model | U.S. recommended price from August 21, 2025 |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | $549.99 |
| PlayStation 5 Digital Edition | $499.99 |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | $749.99 |
These were Sony’s recommended prices, not a guarantee of the price, availability or stock at any particular retailer. Sony’s August 20, 2025 announcement said the company continued to navigate a “challenging economic environment.” Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, said: “Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”

Why did Sony raise prices?
For the August 2025 U.S. increase, Sony cited a challenging economic environment but did not publish a detailed cost breakdown or quantify the effect of any individual factor. Reporting by Ars Technica discussed tariffs and manufacturing costs as broader industry context; those factors were not specified by Sony as the reason for that announcement.

For the later global increase, Tomatis said on March 27, 2026: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.” That statement likewise gives a broad rationale rather than a quantified explanation.
