Sony has announced a lower-priced PS5 Digital Edition for Japan: the Midnight Black Japanese-only model costs ¥55,000 including tax and is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026. It is not a price cut for the US or a newly announced worldwide console. The system requires Japanese as its system language and a PlayStation account registered to Japan.
What Sony announced
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japanese-only on October 13, 2026. The console, model CFI-2200B02S, is scheduled to go on sale in Japan on November 19. Reservations are due to begin October 20 through Japanese PlayStation retailers and ecommerce sites. Sony’s announcement describes it as a Japan-limited product requiring both Japanese system language and a Japan-region PlayStation account.

That makes “cheaper PS5” a market-specific description, not a global price announcement. Sony’s recommended US prices, effective April 2, 2026, are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Those US prices and the Japan price are set in different markets and include different tax and currency contexts, so a direct currency conversion would not establish which is cheaper for a buyer. Sony Direct’s US listings showed $649, $599 and $899 respectively when accessed on October 13, 2026; those are dated store listings, not guaranteed current prices. The ¥55,000 price is not the first Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition at that price. A separate Japan-only ¥55,000 Digital Edition was reported in November 2025 and launched November 21, 2025. The 2026 announcement is for a later Midnight Black model. TechRadar’s November 12, 2025 report

What comes in the box—and what it can play
This is a digital-only console: a disc drive is not included. Sony sells a matching Midnight Black drive separately for ¥11,980 including tax. It can be installed to play packaged games, but pairing the drive with the console requires an internet connection. Buyers who want physical-game playback should account for both items and their separate prices rather than treating ¥55,000 as the cost of a disc-equipped setup.
Sony lists the console package as including the 825 GB SSD console, one DualSense wireless controller, two horizontal feet, HDMI cable, power cord, USB cable, printed materials and preinstalled ASTRO’s PLAYROOM. A vertical stand is sold separately. The stated SSD capacity is not all available for games and other user data because system software uses part of it.

Sony says the model retains the core PS5 experience, including 3D audio, DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, and PS4 backward compatibility with exceptions. The company cautions that not all external devices are guaranteed to work and that specifications may change without notice. The M.2 connector is listed, but the announcement does not identify a particular compatible expansion drive.
Warranty and future disc-game sales notice
Sony says buyers of qualifying Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition consoles during a campaign ending March 31, 2027 may receive a total two-year manufacturer warranty instead of the usual one year. Application is required, and eligibility depends on the campaign terms; check Sony’s Japanese product announcement and applicable terms before relying on the extended coverage.

Sony also says newly released PlayStation games from January 2028 onward will be sold only as downloads through PlayStation Store and retailers. - Physical games: The console has no drive in the box. Add the separately priced drive if you need packaged-game playback, and allow for the internet pairing requirement.
- Storage: 825 GB is the installed capacity, not the amount available to use; system software occupies some space.
- Campaign coverage: The possible two-year warranty requires an eligible purchase and application; verify the current conditions.
