Sony announced the PlayStation 5 Pro on September 10, 2024, with a launch price of $699.99 in the United States. It launched on November 7, 2024, without a disc drive. The “monster price” is the 2024 launch MSRP—not a statement about today’s retail prices, which are not established here.

How much did the PS5 Pro cost at launch?

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced these launch MSRPs in 2024:

Market Launch MSRP Attribution
United States $699.99 USD Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024
United Kingdom £699.99 GBP Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024
Euro area €799.99 EUR Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024
Japan ¥119,980 JPY, including tax Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024

Sony announced the console on September 10, 2024, and released it on November 7, 2024. These figures are launch prices, not current offers; current retail prices and stock have not been verified. Sony’s announcement and launch release document the pricing and timing.

Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?

No. The PS5 Pro launched as a disc-less console. Sony said buyers could add the separately available Disc Drive for PS5; it is not included in the box. For someone who uses physical media, that separate purchase raises the practical cost above the console’s launch MSRP. Sony’s disc-drive setup guide says the drive enables physical PS5 and compatible PS4 game discs, 4K Blu-ray discs, and DVDs.

What came in the box?

The launch configuration included a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller, and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. The separately purchased drive was not part of that package. Sony’s announcement outlines the configuration.

What did Sony claim about PS5 Pro performance?

Sony positioned the Pro as a more capable version of PS5, citing hardware changes and image technologies intended to improve supported games. Its launch release reported the following figures relative to the then-current PS5:

  • 67% more GPU compute units — Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024.
  • 28% faster memory — Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024.
  • Up to 45% faster rendering — Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024.

Sony also promoted advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its AI-driven upscaling technology. These are manufacturer claims, not independent performance-test results. Pro enhancements apply to selected supported games, and the features and their effects vary by game. Sony’s launch release describes the performance positioning.

Is the PS5 Pro worth it?

There is no universal answer in the available evidence: Sony’s specifications and claims do not establish how much a particular buyer will gain in everyday play. The upgrade is easiest to assess by looking at the games and setup you actually use:

  • Your current console: Moving from PS4 is a different decision from replacing a PS5 you already own.
  • Your games: Check whether your regular titles support PS5 Pro enhancements; the benefit is game-dependent.
  • Your display and priorities: Consider whether you value smoother frame rates, upscaling, or ray tracing enough to pay more for the hardware.
  • Your media habits: If you rely on physical discs, account for the separate drive rather than treating the launch console price as the complete disc-playing setup.
  • Your budget: Compare the price with the value you expect from the supported games you play, rather than assuming every PS5 title will look or run differently.

Do existing PS5 accessories work with PS5 Pro?

Sony said then-current PS5 accessories are compatible, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, the Access controller, Pulse Elite, and Pulse Explore. Sony also said the user interface and network services remain the same as on PS5. See Sony’s compatibility announcement for the stated details.
