Sony has not announced a PlayStation 6 or a native PS6 handheld. The device widely discussed under the reported codename Project Canis is based on leaks and industry reporting, not confirmed specifications. A reported custom AMD RDNA 5 design could give it an architectural advantage over current portable systems, but there are no public benchmarks or final hardware details proving it would outperform every competitor.

Sony has discussed broader ways to play PlayStation games, but it has not announced a PS6 handheld, confirmed the Canis name or provided a release date.

Another account of Nishino’s comments described a “seamless experience” beyond the living room. Neither statement names a handheld, confirms a product or establishes a launch timetable.
Sony’s May 8, 2026 corporate strategy material confirms continued investment in artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve visual fidelity and player experiences. It does not confirm a PS6 device, RDNA 5 graphics, Project Canis or a handheld-specific upscaler.
What does the RDNA 5 report mean for performance?
The central claim comes from Digital Foundry veteran Richard Leadbetter. Push Square attributed this statement to him: “There has been some behind the scene discussions that Sony has an exclusive of sorts on RDNA 5 for handheld with its mobile device that’s coming.”

Notebookcheck likewise reported that a possible Sony handheld could be the only portable system using a custom AMD RDNA 5-based system-on-chip. These reports describe informal, rumor-level information rather than an AMD or Sony announcement.
If such a semi-custom design exists, RDNA 5 could offer potential gains in efficiency, ray tracing and AI-assisted graphics. Those are architectural possibilities, not a performance result. A handheld’s sustained output also depends on its thermal envelope, battery limits, memory bandwidth, operating clocks, game engine support, display resolution and the quality of Sony’s software tools.

What specifications have been leaked for Project Canis?
A PlayStation Universe report dated August 28, 2025 relayed claims from Moore’s Law Is Dead. The figures below are allegations, not Sony specifications.

Could the rumored handheld be more capable than every other portable?
That headline goes beyond the available evidence. No independent Canis benchmark, final silicon specification or confirmed comparison with competing handhelds has been published.
- Local rendering versus streaming: A Canis device is rumored to render games locally. That is a fundamentally different product from a remote-play handheld, where game rendering occurs on a PS5 or in the cloud.
- Graphics architecture: The alleged RDNA 5 design is the main potential differentiator, but its existence and implementation remain unconfirmed.
- Power modes: The reported 1.20GHz handheld and 1.65GHz docked graphics clocks imply that performance may vary with available power and cooling, if the leak is genuine.
- Memory: A reported 48GB ceiling would be notable for a portable, but the leak does not establish how much memory games would actually receive or how fast the complete system would be.
- Backward compatibility: PS4 and PS5 support could expand the software library, yet that claim is also only part of the leak.
- Battery and thermals: A powerful chip can be limited by battery life, fan noise, heat and the size of the enclosure. No reliable public figures exist for any of those factors.

PlayStation Portal is Sony’s current handheld-style product, but it is a remote player rather than a native PS6 system. Nishino described it as a way for PS5 owners to play PS5 games through the handheld device, and TechRadar has characterized Portal as built around streaming and cloud or remote play rather than the local game execution associated with the PSP and PS Vita.
A rumored Canis would therefore represent a different category if it can run games on-device. Portal’s usefulness depends on a PS5 connection or supported cloud service, while the alleged Canis specifications describe an independent processor, graphics engine and expandable storage. Sony has not said that Portal is a stopgap for Canis or that the two products share hardware.

When could Sony’s PS6 handheld arrive?
The only timing in the public discussion comes from the August 2025 leak: manufacturing was allegedly planned for mid-2027, with a possible fall 2027 launch. That is not a Sony schedule. Production plans, product names and dates can change, and Sony has not confirmed that the device exists.

What can you buy from Sony now?
PlayStation Portal is the currently available Sony device designed for handheld-style play. It is appropriate for PS5 owners who want remote access to their console or supported cloud play, but it should not be presented as a PS6 handheld or as evidence that Canis has been announced.
