Nintendo’s Splatoon 3 Ver. 10.0.0 update, released June 12, 2025, changed how the game is presented on the two Switch generations. Nintendo says the Switch 2 version shows more detail and smoother movement in specified areas and animations. On the original Switch, selected scenery outside the stage is hidden during four battle modes to reduce differences in game operation speed. The change is not described as a handheld-only graphics downgrade.
What the update changed
Nintendo separated the Ver. 10.0.0 notes by platform. Switch 2 received several display and animation changes; the original Switch received a mode-specific scenery change. The update history is available in Nintendo’s Splatoon 3 update notes.

What changed on Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo says the game displays more detail on Switch 2. Its notes also identify smoother movement or animation in particular settings and scenes:
- Smoother on-screen movement in Splatsville, Inkopolis, Inkopolis Square, and Grand Festival Grounds.
- Smoother Salmonid animations in Salmon Run, including when many Salmonids are on stage.
- Smoother animations for some characters, such as jellyfish.
- A changed scene-transition animation.
- Higher-resolution images saved to the Switch 2 album when screenshots are captured with Photo Mode or the Capture Button.
These are Nintendo’s stated changes. The notes do not provide a resolution figure or frame-rate measurement, so they do not establish a specific pixel count or FPS increase.

What changed on the original Nintendo Switch
During Splat Zones, Tower Control, Rainmaker, and Clam Blitz battles, elements outside the stage that are unrelated to battle no longer display. Nintendo says the purpose is to reduce differences in game operation speed as much as possible compared with Switch 2. In Recon mode, all elements continue to display as before.
Nintendo’s notes do not limit this change to handheld play. They describe a change to the original Switch version in those four battle modes, not a general reduction to handheld resolution, textures, or every part of the game.

- Experiment with new styles for Inklings and Octolings
- 4v4 Turf Wars* are back, with new stages, new maneuvers, and new weapons
- Join Agent 3 in a fight against the unruly Octarians in story mode
Does that mean the original Switch graphics got worse?
In a narrow sense, yes: players see less surrounding scenery during the specified battles because some out-of-stage elements are hidden. But “graphics downgrade” is too broad if it suggests that Nintendo reduced all visual quality or changed the game only when played handheld. The documented adjustment is selective, applies to four modes, and leaves the scenery visible in Recon.
Nintendo presented the change as a way to reduce differences in game operation speed between the systems. The Ver. 10.0.0 notes do not publish comparative performance tests or image-quality measurements, so they cannot show how much operation speed changed or quantify a visual trade-off.

How later updates fit in
Nintendo released Ver. 10.0.1 on June 27, 2025. It fixed an issue where the game tended to run slower than before when many shots and characters were on stage; Nintendo said operation would return to the Ver. 9.3.0 level. That fix concerns crowded scenes and does not, by itself, show that the platform-specific presentation changes in Ver. 10.0.0 were reverted.
As of the consulted US support history, Nintendo lists Ver. 11.3.0, released August 19, 2026, as the latest update. The UK history dates that release August 20, 2026. Nintendo says players need to use the same software version to play together; check the update history for the relevant region and version details.
