The clearest reported callbacks are to Hazelight’s own games and Josef Fares’s 2017 Game Awards speech; references to other games and media should be treated as leads rather than confirmed scene-by-scene finds.
What counts as an Easter egg in Split Fiction?
Split Fiction is a co-op action-adventure from Hazelight Studios, published by Electronic Arts. Its protagonists, aspiring writers Mio and Zoe, move through science-fiction and fantasy worlds based on their stories. EA describes optional Side Stories as trips into unfinished drafts and creative concepts. That imaginative setup leaves room for visual jokes and nods to other games, but a resemblance alone does not prove a deliberate reference.

EA’s launch announcement dates the game’s release to March 6, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. In an interview published the next day, director Josef Fares said the initial idea was to combine science fiction and fantasy. Read EA’s interview with Josef Fares and EA’s game overview.
Hazelight and Josef Fares callbacks
1. Josef Fares’s Game Awards speech
Epic Games Store’s Easter egg guide identifies a reference to Fares’s much-memed speech at The Game Awards 2017, in which he railed against the Oscars. The surfaced guide description supports the callback, but does not establish enough scene detail to give a reliable location or directions. The joke works as a nod to the outspoken director’s public persona; there is no need to repeat the speech’s profanity to explain it. Epic Games Store’s Split Fiction Easter egg guide.

2. A Way Out
Epic’s guide also calls out a reference to A Way Out, Hazelight’s earlier prison-break adventure. This is a studio self-reference rather than a crossover that changes the story. The source available for the claim does not pin down its precise placement or mechanics, so treat it as a reported callback, not a location walkthrough.
References to other games and media
3. Dark Souls
Dark Souls appears among the references named in secondary coverage, including Destructoid’s list and MobyGames’ trivia index. Those source descriptions do not substantiate the exact scene. In particular, they are not enough to confidently identify a specific object or landmark as a bonfire, or to direct players to one.
Rank #2
- Kena: Bridge of Spirits - Deluxe Edition includes: Base Game, Official Digital Soundtrack, Unique Kena Staff, Golden Rot Skin, Retail Exclusive Sticker Sheet, Unique Celebration Hats for Rot

- Fast-Paced Combat: Spirits have become corrupt, trapped, and unable to move on, challenging Kena at every turn
4. Akira
Destructoid’s list describes an Akira reference in an early level. That supports including the film and manga as a reported reference, but not a detailed account of the shot or its location. Destructoid’s list of Split Fiction Easter eggs.
5–10. Six more entries are not established here
Secondary reference lists also name Halo, Super Mario, Final Fantasy VII, Donkey Kong, and It Takes Two. The available descriptions do not provide enough scene-level evidence to turn those names into six distinct, verified entries, or to attach locations and directions to them. Listing them as confirmed discoveries would overstate what those sources show. MobyGames explicitly presents its trivia as including, but not limited to, the named franchises. Why this is a selection, not a complete list
There is no established total number of Easter eggs in Split Fiction. Destructoid frames its coverage as ten of the “best,” while MobyGames describes its reference list as non-exhaustive. The four entries above are the specific claims supported by the available source descriptions; the other franchise names are leads, not a verified completion list. Distinguish a clearly attributed callback from a fan interpretation unless the scene itself makes the reference unmistakable.
