Star Citizen crashes on Windows are usually fixed by identifying the failure code rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game. Use Windows’ system information and your GPU control panel to verify the actual CPU model, instruction support, installed RAM, VRAM and free SSD capacity. The launcher does not fully check available disk space, so an apparently valid installation can still run out of room during updates or shader and cache activity.
How do you capture the crash before trying another launch?
Capture the first failure while its evidence is still intact. RSI warns that a later successful session can overwrite the relevant log, which is why repeated launches can remove the clues needed to choose the correct fix.

How do you fix launcher, loading and installation crashes?
Clear the RSI launcher cache
Open the RSI launcher, select the RSI logo menu, choose Settings, then select CLEAR LAUNCHER CACHE. Restart the launcher and test once. This targets stale launcher data without deleting the installed game.

Check physical memory and XMP for 0xC0000005
RSI has seen access violations with bad memory and fast-memory/XMP configurations. If your system uses an overclocked memory profile, test a standard motherboard memory profile and run a memory diagnostic; restore normal settings before drawing conclusions. An audio-driver incompatibility or a graphics-card fault can produce the same code, so do not replace RAM solely because the exception name contains “memory.”

Exit the game and launcher. Open the game’s LIVE folder, create or edit user.cfg, add this line exactly, save the file, and relaunch:

Resolve “Failed to Initialize Vulkan”
Update the graphics driver and the Vulkan runtime supplied by that driver. RSI also documents an Easy Anti-Cheat conflict involving Windows Exploit protection: ensure the ASLR protections are enabled in Windows Exploit protection, reboot, and test again. If the problem remains, record the Vulkan initialization text and report it through the Issue Council.
Is Alpha 4.10.2’s Vulkan crash a known issue?
Yes. RSI’s October 9, 2026 Alpha 4.10.2 known-issues page describes a Vulkan crash to desktop that can display error 3221225477, particularly on Nvidia driver 616.56. For that specific combination, RSI lists two workarounds: roll back the Nvidia driver or switch the renderer to DirectX 11.

Search the Issue Council for matching reports, especially when the crash started with a new Alpha build or occurs for many players. A watch-dog or fatal-engine code may require a future patch rather than a local setting. RSI does not publish a prevalence rate for Windows crashes or a guaranteed success rate for any individual workaround, so a fix that helps one configuration is not proof of a universal solution.
Performance and stability can also vary with the game location, server population, background applications and network conditions. If the same machine crashes only in one location or during a particular server event, preserve that context in the report instead of presenting it as a hardware-only failure.
