To play Electronic Arts’ November 2017 Star Wars Battlefront II online, install an entitled copy on PC, PlayStation 4/5 or Xbox One/Series X|S, complete every update, connect to the internet and sign in with an EA Account. PlayStation console players also need PlayStation Plus; Xbox console players need Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. PC, PlayStation and Xbox players cannot enter the same matches because the game has no cross-play.
First confirm that you own or can access the 2017 game on the platform you intend to use. Then select an online mode such as Blast, Hero Showdown, Galactic Assault or Co-Op. Arcade is offline practice, not an online queue.

What do I need before playing Battlefront II online?
You need four things before matchmaking:
- An entitlement to the 2017 Star Wars Battlefront II on the platform you will use. EA lists PC access through the EA app, Steam or Epic Games, plus PS4 and Xbox One versions. Xbox lists the game for Xbox One and Series X|S; Sony lists the PS4 game, which can run on PS5 subject to Sony’s compatibility caveat.
- The latest game update installed. Start the download before troubleshooting matchmaking, because an out-of-date client may be refused by the service.
- An internet connection and an EA Account. The platform account and the EA Account are separate identities that must be linked for online access.
- The platform’s online-multiplayer permission: PlayStation Plus on PS4 or PS5, or Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate on Xbox consoles. A game entitlement and an online subscription are separate requirements.
These requirements do not mean that every access route is identical. EA Play can provide game access where the title is included in the relevant regional catalog, but it does not remove PlayStation Plus or Xbox console multiplayer requirements.
How do I play Battlefront II online on PC?
On PC, use the storefront where you own or are entitled to the game, link that account to EA, update the installation and choose a multiplayer mode from the game’s Play area.

1. Confirm the correct PC edition
Make sure the product is Electronic Arts’ 2017 Star Wars Battlefront II, not the earlier game with a similar name. EA identifies the PC release through the EA app, Steam and Epic Games. An entitlement on one storefront does not automatically create ownership on a different storefront, so launch from the account that holds your copy or subscription access.
2. Install, update and link accounts
- Install the game from the EA app, Steam or Epic Games account that owns it or receives it through an eligible subscription.
- Allow the complete game update to finish before opening multiplayer.
- When prompted, sign in to an EA Account. Steam and Epic players can link their respective storefront accounts to EA through the account-linking flow.

PC Game Pass can provide PC EA Play access through the EA app where the title is included for your region and plan. That is a game-access route, not an instruction to buy an Xbox console multiplayer subscription for a Windows PC.
3. Enter an online mode
Open the game’s Play or Multiplayer area and choose a mode that uses matchmaking. Blast is a focused trooper-versus-trooper format, Hero Showdown centers on smaller hero matchups, and Galactic Assault is a larger objective-based battle. Arcade is offline practice, so it will not place you in an online match.
The exact wording of buttons and friend-invite controls can change between PC storefront overlays and game updates. Use the current friends or party controls shown in your installation rather than relying on an old keyboard shortcut or overlay guide.
How do I play Battlefront II online on PlayStation?
Use the PS4 game on a PS4, or run that PS4 version on a PS5, then maintain PlayStation Plus, update the game and sign in to the linked EA Account.
1. Check the console and entitlement
Sony lists the PS4 version. Sony also supports running it on PS5, while warning that some PS4 features may be missing when a game is played through backward compatibility. Confirm that the PlayStation account you will use owns the game or has access through an eligible catalog.

The US PlayStation listing states that “PS Plus [is] required for online play.” This applies even if your game access comes through EA Play. EA Play and PlayStation Plus solve different problems: EA Play may provide the game, while PS Plus supplies the console’s online-multiplayer permission.

3. Update and sign in
- Install the PS4 version on PS4 or PS5.
- Complete all game and system updates.
- Start the game and sign in to the EA Account linked with your PlayStation account.
- Open Play or Multiplayer and select Blast, Hero Showdown, Galactic Assault or another online mode. Do not select Arcade when you want matchmaking.
A DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller is the controller Sony identifies for the PS4 game. A controller choice does not replace PlayStation Plus and will not fix an account or server problem.
How do I play Battlefront II online on Xbox?
Install the Xbox One version on Xbox One or Series X|S, link the Xbox profile to EA, finish updates and keep Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate active for online console multiplayer.
1. Use the supported Xbox version
Xbox lists Battlefront II for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The Series consoles can run the Xbox version, but that same-console-family compatibility is not cross-play with PC or PlayStation.

2. Check the current online plan names
The US Xbox listing states: “Online multiplayer on console requires XBOX Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate (subscriptions sold separately).” Do not substitute the older “Xbox Live Gold” wording found in legacy game-page disclaimers for the current plan names.
Ultimate includes EA Play, and PC Game Pass includes PC EA Play. Those inclusions do not mean that EA Play alone grants Xbox console multiplayer for this game; the console requirement remains a qualifying Game Pass plan.
3. Update, link and launch
- Install the Xbox One/Series X|S game from the Xbox account that owns it or has eligible access.
- Install every available game update.
- Link the Xbox account to an EA Account when prompted, then sign in.
- Open Play or Multiplayer and choose an online mode such as Blast, Hero Showdown or Galactic Assault.
Xbox currently lists cloud play through Ultimate. Cloud availability is tied to the Xbox listing and plan, and it does not add PC-versus-Xbox cross-play.
Can PC, PlayStation and Xbox players play together?
No. Star Wars Battlefront II does not support cross-play between PC, PlayStation and Xbox. EA staff have stated that players cannot play with people on different platforms, and linking the same EA Account does not change that limitation.

There are two forms of same-family compatibility that can be mistaken for cross-play:
- The PS4 game running on PS5 remains within the PlayStation family.
- The Xbox version running on Xbox One and Series X|S remains within the Xbox family.
Before arranging a squad, confirm that everyone is on PC, on PlayStation, or on Xbox. A PC friend cannot join a PlayStation or Xbox lobby, and a PlayStation friend cannot join an Xbox lobby.
Which online mode should I choose?
Choose by match style rather than by expected queue speed. The available descriptions explain what each mode is designed to do, not how many people are online at a particular time.

How do I play with friends?
Use the game’s current friends or party controls after confirming that every player is on the same platform family and has the required account and subscription setup. The precise invitation labels and overlay sequence vary by storefront and console interface, and no single present-day button path is established for all three platforms.
- Verify that each friend owns or can access the game on the same platform family.
- Check that each person has completed updates and linked an EA Account.
- On PlayStation, verify PlayStation Plus for every console player; on Xbox, verify Essential, Premium or Ultimate for every console player.
- Use the game’s visible party, friends or invite controls to form a group, then select an online mode.
If one friend appears offline, first check the platform account status and EA sign-in before assuming that a cross-play setting is missing. There is no cross-play switch that can make a mixed PC, PlayStation and Xbox group work.

Work through prerequisites in this order so that you do not buy an unnecessary subscription or reinstall without checking the service.

- Check account type. EA cautions that certain child or limited sub-accounts cannot link for online play. A restriction of that kind must be resolved through the platform or account’s permitted settings; changing modes inside the game will not bypass it.
No live up/down result or current regional matchmaking count is established here, so a failed search should not be interpreted as proof that the game has no players. The supported player figures published by platform and EA listings describe capacity, not today’s queue speed.

Yes. Buying the game gives an entitlement; EA Play or another eligible catalog can provide access only while the title remains included for your region and plan. Console online permission is separate: PlayStation Plus is still required on PlayStation, and a qualifying Game Pass plan is still required for Xbox console multiplayer.
Check the store page for your country before relying on a subscription catalog. Catalogs, plan names and included games can change, while an owned copy remains tied to the platform account that purchased it. On PC, PC Game Pass may provide PC EA Play access through the EA app; that is not the same entitlement as Xbox console access.
How many players can a match support?
Published figures describe supported match sizes, not current simultaneous population or a promise of a full lobby.
