Ars Technica’s Alessandro Fillari, reviewing the game on April 26, 2023, sees its expanded scale as a real strength: the sequel creates a more substantial Star Wars universe while maintaining a focused, galaxy-hopping adventure. The added scope supports the story and core gameplay, but the review also notes rough edges that can dull the main narrative and moments when the ambition buckles under its own weight. That balance—impressive expansion with some strain—is central to the game’s appeal. Read the Ars Technica review.
What’s new compared with Fallen Order?
The sequel broadens the earlier game’s combat and exploration rather than abandoning its basic action-adventure approach. Lucasfilm’s official description highlights additional Force abilities and lightsaber styles, new planets as well as familiar frontiers, and skills and equipment that shape both combat and exploration.

- The story of Cal Kestis continues five years after the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and follows Cal’s increasingly desperate fight as the galaxy descends further into darkness.
- Continue Cal’s Journey - No longer a Padawan, Cal has come into his own and grown into a powerful Jedi Knight.
- Go Beyond Your Training – The cinematic combat system returns with additional Force abilities and new lightsaber fighting styles.
- Explore an Untamed Galaxy – Discover new planets and familiar frontiers in the Star Wars galaxy, each with unique challenges, and enemies.
- The Dark Times are closing in – with enemies surrounding him, Cal will need to decide how far he’s willing to go to save those closest to him.
- More combat options: Cal can use additional lightsaber styles and Force abilities, giving the sequel a wider set of approaches to fights.
- More to explore: New planets and returning frontiers offer different biomes and challenges, while skills and equipment affect how Cal moves through and interacts with those spaces.
- Companions in the action: Allies can join Cal in combat and help with puzzles and navigating planets. In a 2023 interview, director Stig Asmussen described a system that lets players call on companions for special attacks with a limited cooldown. Asmussen’s StarWars.com interview explains the companion design.
The result is a sequel with more breadth across combat, traversal, and world-building. That breadth makes the adventure feel more expansive, but it also contributes to the unevenness Ars Technica identifies: not every part of the larger experience lands as smoothly as its strongest systems.
Do you need to play Jedi: Fallen Order first?
No. EA says the games can stand alone, and progress does not transfer from Fallen Order. A newcomer can start with Survivor; playing the earlier game first adds context to Cal’s continuing story, but it is not a prerequisite. EA’s game FAQ addresses both the standalone stories and save progression.

- No longer a Padawan, Cal has come into his own and grown into a powerful Jedi Knight; Carrying the memories and expectations of the Jedi Order with him, his crusade against the Empire has only become more perilous
- The cinematic combat system returns with additional Force abilities and new lightsaber fighting styles; Creatively leverage all these abilities and weapons to strategically take on an expanded host of enemies, sizing up strengths and weaknesses
- Discover new planets and familiar frontiers in the Star Wars galaxy, each with unique biomes, challenges, and enemies; Master new skills, equipment, and abilities that will augment the ways you explore, fight, and roam
- With larger areas to explore and more to discover off the beaten path, players who adventure beyond the horizon will find hidden rewards
Is Jedi: Survivor worth playing if you liked Fallen Order?
If you liked Fallen Order for its action-adventure structure, lightsaber combat, and Star Wars setting, Survivor offers more of the same foundation with wider combat choices, companion assists, and a larger set of places to explore. The Ars Technica review’s verdict is positive but not unqualified: the expanded scale and depth make for a compelling adventure, yet story rough edges and the pressure of that scale keep it from feeling uniformly polished.
Director Stig Asmussen said in EA’s 2023 launch announcement that “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor evolves the gameplay experience of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in every way.” That is the director’s promotional description, not an independent critical verdict; the review’s more measured assessment is that the evolution is substantial, with some costs attached. EA’s launch announcement includes the full context for his statement.
