Star Wars Outlaws was my biggest gaming surprise of the year: not because it settles every argument about the franchise, but because its focused story about a rising scoundrel offers a different, compelling way to inhabit the galaxy. The game arrived amid mixed launch-period signals, and Ubisoft later detailed updates aimed at core complaints. Here’s what it is, what changed, and what to know before choosing a platform or edition.
What is Star Wars Outlaws?
Developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world action-adventure starring Kay Vess, an emerging scoundrel, and Nix, her companion. Its story takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, a stretch of the timeline that leaves room for crime syndicates and people trying to survive outside the Rebellion-versus-Empire spotlight.

Ubisoft’s game overview describes travel through familiar and new locations, speeder racing, jobs for syndicates, shifting reputations, stealth and blaster combat, and dogfights aboard Kay’s ship, the Trailblazer. That mix is the game’s appeal: the fantasy is less about becoming a Jedi and more about navigating an unstable underworld with a useful companion and a growing list of debts, favors, and enemies.
When the game was announced in June 2023, Massive creative director Julian Gerighty called it “a dream come true to be able to collaborate with the team at Lucasfilm Games to create Star Wars Outlaws, the first open-world Star Wars game,” as quoted by StarWars.com. That description captures the ambition, though the finished game’s value rests on whether its scoundrel-focused adventure works for you.

Why was Star Wars Outlaws under fire at launch?
The launch conversation was not one simple verdict. In a September 25, 2024 financial disclosure, Ubisoft reported a Metacritic score of 76 and a 3.9/5 user score across Ubisoft’s First Party and Epic stores. The same disclosure said “Star Wars Outlaws initial sales proved softer than expected.” Those are dated company-reported figures and characterization—not current scores, an all-platform user rating, or an independent sales estimate.
Ubisoft said its teams were mobilized to make updates in response to player feedback. That response matters, but it is not proof that every concern was fixed or that every player came away satisfied. The more useful question is what the updates actually changed.

Did updates improve Star Wars Outlaws?
Ubisoft’s November 21, 2024 Steam and Wild Card announcement described Title Update 1.4.0 as a substantial effort to improve several parts of play:
- Stealth and combat choice: changes intended to give players more flexibility in how they approach encounters.
- Enemy AI and detection: adjustments to how enemies respond and spot Kay.
- Weak points and weapon tuning: combat refinements affecting targets and weapons.
- Dialogue and visual options: additional choices for presentation and interaction.
This is concrete evidence of post-launch work, not a guarantee that the update resolved every player’s complaint. If you bounced off the launch version, the update notes give you specific areas to reconsider; whether the changes address your own frustrations depends on what those were.

What platforms is Star Wars Outlaws on?
Ubisoft’s product page lists the original release as August 30, 2024, with versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Amazon Luna, and Windows PC through Ubisoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. Ubisoft announced Steam availability on November 21, 2024. The game then launched on Nintendo Switch 2 in September 2025, according to Ubisoft’s November 2025 financial disclosure. Storefront availability can vary by region and may change, so check the relevant platform’s current listing.
That Switch 2 release gives players another way to encounter the game, but it does not establish a universal best platform. Ubisoft’s November 2025 disclosure described the launch as receiving strong critical and player reception and praised its visuals and technical optimization. Separately, TechRadar’s January 2026 review assessed the Switch 2 Gold Edition, including its performance and included content. Those evaluations apply to that release and its reviewers’ assessments, not every version or every player.

What’s in the Gold Edition and Season Pass?
Ubisoft’s official game page describes Gold and Ultimate editions and a Season Pass with additional content. The exact package can vary by platform and listing; check the edition’s current storefront page before buying, especially if you are comparing a base game with a Switch 2 Gold Edition. TechRadar’s review covers the contents of the Switch 2 Gold Edition it assessed, but that is not a substitute for verifying the listing for another platform or region.
Is Star Wars Outlaws worth playing?
For me, yes—particularly if the idea of a character-led Star Wars crime story sounds more appealing than another power-fantasy built around a famous hero. Kay and Nix give the adventure a clear center, while syndicate jobs, stealth, blaster fights, and the Trailblazer’s dogfights let it move between different flavors of space adventure.

It is also fair to approach it with the launch history in mind: Ubisoft acknowledged softer-than-expected initial sales in September 2024, and later described a targeted set of gameplay and presentation changes. Those facts explain why the game became contested; they do not settle the personal question of whether its particular blend of open-world activities and scoundrel storytelling will land for you. The surprise, for me, is that this smaller-scale perspective can make the galaxy feel inviting again without claiming to speak for every Star Wars fan or repair the franchise as a whole.
