Meadowlands is the exception: it starts with a coop and two chickens, and its gift is 15 Hay rather than Parsnip Seeds. Once your opening task is handled, use any remaining time and energy for clearing or exploring—there is no single perfect Day 1 route.
What to do on Day 1 in Stardew Valley
- Check inside the farmhouse. On every farm map except Meadowlands, Mayor Lewis leaves 15 Parsnip Seeds in the home on Spring 1. On Meadowlands, the gift is 15 Hay; the farm already has a coop and two chickens. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Getting Started guide describes both openings.
- Clear a small crop plot. Make room for at least 15 tiles, enough for the standard seed gift. Use the axe on trees, the pickaxe on stones, and the scythe on grass. You do not need to clear the whole farm.
- Till, plant, and water. Use the hoe on clear ground, plant the seeds, then water each planted tile. The starting watering can covers one tile at a time and can be refilled at a body of water. The official first-day instructions are a practical starting point, not a requirement to spend the whole day farming.
- Choose how to spend what remains. Clear more land, explore, or do another early-game activity according to your preference and remaining energy. Tool use costs energy, so there is no evidence-based universal schedule that makes one optional activity the best choice for every player.
What should you plant first?
If your farm gave you the standard starter seeds, plant the 15 Parsnip Seeds. Parsnips take four days to grow, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Parsnip entry. Keep them watered each day so they continue growing. Missing a day’s watering pauses growth; it does not, by itself, kill the crop. The Wiki’s Getting Started guide explains the watering routine.

Each regular-quality parsnip restores 25 Energy, as listed in the same Parsnip entry. That can help with later work, but the crop’s first job on Day 1 is to get your farm’s growing routine underway. Meadowlands players do not receive this seed gift, so they can focus on their existing animal setup or other opening activities instead.
How the Meadowlands start differs
| Opening | Starting resources | First-day focus |
|---|---|---|
| Any farm map except Meadowlands | 15 Parsnip Seeds inside the farmhouse | Prepare at least 15 tiles, then till, plant, and water the seeds. |
| Meadowlands | A coop, two chickens, and 15 Hay | Begin with the animal-oriented setup rather than expecting the standard seed gift. |
The different resources support different first-day priorities: an early crop routine or getting involved with the animals already on the farm. The available starting-resource information does not establish that either is universally better.

How to manage time and energy
Your opening tools and tasks use energy, so treat extra clearing and exploration as optional after you have handled the crops you intend to plant. Food—including many crops and foraged items—can restore energy. If you go to sleep by midnight without exhausting yourself, you recover energy and health fully, according to the Getting Started guide.
For a first run, a useful priority is to secure the starter crop routine, then stop clearing when the work no longer feels worthwhile. A partially cleared farm is fine; Day 1 does not require an optimized layout or a fully prepared field.
What to do after Day 1
Return to the planted crops and water them each day. Parsnips need four days to mature, so keep the plot watered while they grow. If you miss a watering, growth pauses rather than the crop dying from that missed day alone. The Getting Started guide and Parsnip entry cover these crop mechanics.
