Ginger Island is the only island players can visit in Stardew Valley’s Fern Islands archipelago. To reach it, repair the boat in the back room of Willy’s Fish Shop, then pay 1,000g for a round trip. The island is divided into South, East, North, and West regions; Golden Walnut payments open routes, facilities, and shortcuts as you explore.
How to get to Ginger Island
- Repair Willy’s boat. Bring the required repair materials to the boat in the back room of Willy’s Fish Shop. The boat becomes the main route to the island once repaired.
- Take the trip from Willy’s shop. Pay 1,000g for the boat ride; the fare covers the return journey. This route depends on the shop being open.
- Use an island warp when available. Island Warp Totems and an Island Obelisk provide alternate access after you have acquired them.
How to read the Ginger Island map and unlock its regions
Ginger Island has four main regions: South, East, North, and West. You first arrive in the South. The eastern route is initially open, while turtles block the paths to the North and West. Since a landmark can appear on the map before its route is accessible, use the map as a guide to both locations and remaining progression.

- Open the North: Follow Leo into the jungle and interact with his hut to clear the northern way.
- Open the West: Pay the nearby parrot 10 Golden Walnuts to move the turtle blocking the western route.

The Volcano Dungeon is at the north end of the island. Its entrance is blocked by lava: pour water from your watering can onto the lava to create a temporary path. That path disappears overnight, so you must make it again on a later visit. A Steel-or-better watering can can cover enough tiles in one use to form the entrance crossing.

- The dungeon has 10 floors, and you progress through doors rather than ladders.
- The Forge is on floor 10.
- After completing the dungeon and opening its exit route, you can pay a parrot 5 Golden Walnuts to build a permanent bridge across the entrance lava.
- A separate 5-walnut shortcut from floor 5 exits outside near the Parrot Express. Taking it ends that dungeon run; to continue exploring, you must start again at the entrance.
Other cave and puzzle stops
- Mushroom Cave: Near the Dig Site, a boulder blocks the cave. Use a bomb to clear it and free Professor Snail.
- Crystal puzzle cave: Northeast of Tiger Slime Grove, this cave has a Simon Says-style sequence in which you repeat the crystal pattern.
Golden Walnuts: total, uses, and important unlock costs
There are 130 Golden Walnuts available across the island. You can find them through exploration, farming, fishing, combat, and Volcano Dungeon activities. Parrots provide hints about some unlocks. Choose payments according to what you want to access next: routes, overnight convenience, or faster travel.

Field Office, farmhouse, and late-game goals
Island Field Office
The Field Office is in the North, south of the Volcano and east of the Dig Site. First rescue Professor Snail from the Mushroom Cave. You can then donate fossils and answer survey questions at the office to earn rewards.

Island Farmhouse and Farm Obelisk
The farmhouse is on the West side. Its 20-walnut repair lets you sleep on the island and ship goods there, reducing the need to return to the mainland every day. A mailbox costs 5 more walnuts. Once both are in place, the Farm Obelisk can be built for 20 walnuts to send you back to the mainland farm.
Qi’s Walnut Room
Collecting 100 Golden Walnuts in total opens Qi’s Walnut Room on the West side. Inside are a Perfection Tracker, a Special Order Board, and a vending machine that sells items for Qi Gems.
