West Realm Shires, Inc., the owner of FTX US, announced on March 22, 2022, that it had acquired Good Luck Games, the developer of Storybook Brawl. The studio was to join FTX Gaming. The game’s team later announced that its servers would shut down on May 1, 2023.
Who acquired Good Luck Games?
The buyer named in the announcement was West Realm Shires, Inc., which FTX US described as the owner of FTX US. The March 22, 2022 announcement said Olympia, Washington-based Good Luck Games would be integrated into FTX Gaming. That is more precise than saying simply that “the FTX exchange” bought the game: the announcement identifies West Realm Shires as the acquiring entity and Good Luck Games as the acquired company. What did FTX say it planned to do with the game?
FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried said the company saw an opportunity to explore the integration of crypto transactions into games. He described this as a direction the company wanted to pursue, not as a feature already confirmed to be part of Storybook Brawl. The announcement does not establish that a crypto integration shipped in the game.

Why did Storybook Brawl shut down?
The official shutdown announcement does not give a specific reason. In a Steam community post on April 25, 2023, the team said it had explored different options but found “no path forward.” It announced that the servers would close on May 1, 2023, and invited players to enjoy the game until then. The post establishes the shutdown date and the team’s explanation, but it does not identify a particular cause or say that FTX’s bankruptcy alone caused the closure. What does a later court filing say about the deal?
A complaint filed on November 8, 2024, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware alleges that Good Luck Games merged with an entity called Merger Sub in 2022 and became a wholly owned subsidiary of West Realm Shires. The complaint also alleges that interestholders received approximately $25 million in cash and stock consideration in connection with the merger.
