To romance Sebastian in Stardew Valley, build his friendship to eight hearts, give him a bouquet to start dating, then reach ten hearts and meet the requirements for marriage. The most dependable way to raise friendship is to talk to him regularly and give him gifts he loves—especially on his birthday, Winter 10.
How to build friendship with Sebastian
Each heart represents 250 friendship points. Talking to Sebastian once per day adds 20 points, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Friendship guide. Make a habit of greeting him when you see him; missed conversations can lead to friendship decay.
You can give him up to two gifts per week, plus one additional gift on his birthday. A birthday gift has eight times its usual friendship effect, making Winter 10 an especially valuable day to give him something he loves. The Sebastian guide lists these confirmed loved gifts:
- Frog Egg
- Frozen Tear
- Obsidian
- Pumpkin Soup
- Sashimi
- Stardrop Tea
- Void Egg
Choose a gift that fits your save
There is no single best gift for every playthrough. Frozen Tear is found in the Mines, Obsidian comes from geodes, and a Void Egg comes from a Void Chicken. Pumpkin Soup is cooked with a pumpkin and milk, while Sashimi can be cooked using any fish. Pick the loved gift you can get most conveniently rather than waiting for a specific item.

Be careful with substitutes: Sebastian dislikes flowers, and some eggs and prepared foods are among his hated gifts. Void Egg is an exception to the egg rule; check an item’s listed reaction before giving it to him.
How to start dating Sebastian
Marriage candidates’ friendship is capped at eight hearts until you give them a bouquet. Once Sebastian reaches eight hearts, give him a bouquet to remove the cap and begin dating. Sebastian’s heart events and how to trigger them
Heart events provide scenes along the way, but they are not all required to marry Sebastian. The Friendship guide warns that some events can be permanently missed; most have timing restrictions and may be viewed out of order. The following triggers are documented on the Sebastian guide:
- Four hearts: Visit the Mountain between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to find Sebastian working on his motorcycle. The documented response choices do not affect friendship.
- Six hearts: Enter Sebastian’s room while he is there. He and Sam invite you to play Solarion Chronicles. For a perfect score, go through the front door, fight the skeleton and raise the shield, take the left green-lit hallway, destroy the capsules, then choose the final action for your character’s archetype.
- Eight hearts: On a rainy day, go to the beach between noon and 11 p.m. Sebastian shares his umbrella and says he feels less anxious around you.
- Ten hearts: Visit the Mountain between 8 p.m. and midnight. Sebastian takes you on a motorcycle ride to a lookout and confesses his feelings. If you tell him to quit smoking, he is briefly annoyed, then acknowledges the habit is bad and says he will try to stop.
- Fourteen hearts, after marriage: On a rainy day, go to the Mountain between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. The event continues with a follow-up at the farmhouse the next day and focuses on Sebastian rescuing and caring for a frog.
How to marry Sebastian
After you are dating, reach ten hearts with Sebastian, upgrade your farmhouse at least once, and unlock access to the beach tide pools. To propose, buy a Mermaid’s Pendant from the Old Mariner for 5,000g and give it to Sebastian at the tidal pools on a rainy day. During Winter, the Old Mariner appears only if you use a Rain Totem. Mayor Lewis explains the tradition in an in-game letter: “If there comes a day that you want to ask for someone’s hand in marriage, you’ll need to give them a ‘Mermaid’s Pendant’.” The wedding ceremony normally takes place three days after the proposal. A town-square event or Green Rain can delay it.
