HD Loader and HD Advance are closely related legacy loaders for playing PS2 games from an internal hard drive. The available documentation does not establish a version-by-version difference between them, so there is no clean winner. For a new internal-HDD setup, Open PS2 Loader (OPL) is the broader option because it supports several storage modes. Its internal HDD mode still expects games in HDLoader format, which is why the two families are not fully interchangeable.
How HD Advance and HD Loader relate
A secondary historical overview of HD Loader describes HD Advance as a cloned release with similar functionality. That same overview points to the pressed-disc format as HD Advance’s main distinguishing benefit. This is a broad historical description rather than a technical specification, and it does not say which builds or dates it covers. Treat HD Advance as the same family of workflow, and check the specific build you are installing rather than assuming identical behaviour.
What the HD Advance menu does
The HD Advance guide consulted here is a specialist tutorial, and it is undated. It shows a main screen with a list of games and four actions:
- Run starts an installed game from the internal drive.
- Convert copies a game disc onto the drive.
- Delete removes the game’s entry from the list. The guide does not say whether the underlying data is also erased.
- Relabel changes the name shown for a game.
The disc conversion flow follows a fixed sequence:
- Select Convert from the main screen.
- Insert the game disc when the loader prompts you.
- Let the loader scan the disc.
- Enter a name for the game when asked.
- Wait for the conversion progress indicator to reach completion.
Menu labels and prompts may differ on other builds, so compare what you see on screen with the tutorial before following it step by step.

Where Open PS2 Loader fits
OPL is the current reference point for this comparison because it has active project documentation. Its guides, however, describe specific releases, and the HDD guide covers OPL 0.9.3.
Its internal HDD mode
OPL’s internal HDD mode supports games installed in HDLoader format. The HDD guide states that internal drives need PSF formatting, and that games must be installed in HDLoader format rather than left as ISO files. It also documents a 2 TB limit for that release. Treat the 2 TB figure as a limit for OPL 0.9.3 only, not as a universal promise for later builds.

Other storage modes
The OPL project README lists modes beyond the internal drive: USB storage, SMB network shares, iLink, MX4SIO, and ATA/IDE HDD. The existence of a mode in the README does not establish that every game works equally well in each one.
Are OPL and HDLoader interchangeable?
Not completely. OPL reads HDLoader-format games on its HDD mode, so a drive populated by HDLoader can often be used with OPL. However, OPL’s compatibility modes are its own settings and are not HDLoader modes. The OPL HDL Server guide, which covers installing games over a network with a PC client, says OPL ignores HDLoader compatibility modes. Do not assume a fix that worked in HDLoader carries over to OPL.

Hardware you need for an internal HDD
The internal-HDD route depends on hardware, and the requirements are stricter than the software choice. The community setup guide, which is not official Sony documentation, identifies these components:
- A fat PS2. The guide states that slim PS2 models do not have the internal HDD bay route.
- A PS2 Network Adapter. The internal-HDD setup requires one on compatible consoles. You can search for it as a category, but confirm it matches your console before buying.
- A compatible internal HDD. Physical fit and compatibility vary between drives and Network Adapters. The HD Advance hardware tutorial makes this warning, but its brand recommendations are old and should not be used as current buying advice.
- An IDE-to-SATA adapter, if you use a SATA drive. The OPL HDD guide documents this arrangement.
- A backup of any existing data. Formatting is a setup step in these guides and can erase the drive’s contents.
The HDLoader and OPL methods can coexist in one setup, according to the community guide. Keep the drive’s existing contents in mind before switching loaders.

Choosing between them
- You already have a drive full of HDLoader-format games. Start with the loader that installed them and confirm it still boots your library. Moving to OPL is reasonable if the games load there, but test a few titles before reformatting anything.
- You are starting fresh and want flexibility. OPL is the better base because its documented modes extend beyond the internal drive, and its HDD guide gives a clear installation path.
- You want the HD Advance menu workflow. The HD Advance tutorial describes the Run, Convert, Delete, and Relabel actions in detail. Use it as a guide to that interface rather than as a guarantee of how every build behaves.
What the evidence does not establish
- No official Sony documentation compares HD Loader with HD Advance.
- No authoritative compatibility matrix covers all loader versions and game titles, so game-specific behaviour remains uncertain.
- The OPL HDD guide describes OPL 0.9.3. Newer OPL builds may change the capacity limit, supported modes, or installation steps.
- The HD Advance equivalence rests on a secondary historical overview, not on a technical comparison.
- Hardware fit advice in the HD Advance tutorial is dated.
Until a current compatibility reference exists, verify your console model, adapter, drive, and loader version together before buying parts or formatting a drive.
