What the September 2023 chart says
GamesBeat’s October 19, 2023 reproduction of Circana’s top 20 U.S. chart put Starfield first, Mortal Kombat 1 second and EA Sports FC 24 third. The ranking compares dollar sales in the United States during September 2023; it is not a global or lifetime-sales list.

Digital sales were excluded for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, NBA 2K24 and Mario Kart 8 in the reproduced chart. That qualification matters when interpreting their positions against games whose digital sales were counted. GamesBeat’s chart and market report provides the list and its exclusions.
Did Starfield outsell Mortal Kombat 1?
It ranked ahead of Mortal Kombat 1 by U.S. dollar sales for September 2023. The chart does not disclose individual copy totals, so it does not show whether Starfield sold more units. Different prices, editions and platform sales can affect revenue rankings, and the sources cited here do not provide enough detail to calculate a unit comparison.

The two games were also close in the year-to-date ranking through September: Starfield stood seventh and Mortal Kombat 1 eighth. These are calendar-year-to-date positions as of that month, not lifetime rankings. Hogwarts Legacy led the year-to-date chart, followed by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
How Game Pass fits into Starfield’s result
Starfield launched on Xbox and PC and was available through Xbox Game Pass. That context does not change what the chart measures: its No. 1 position reflects dollar sales captured in Circana’s ranking, not total players, subscriptions, or all access to the game. The reported data do not quantify how many people bought Starfield, played through Game Pass, or used another route to access it.

VGC reported that Starfield’s launch-month dollar sales were highest on PC. In platform-specific reporting attributed to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella’s posts, Game Informer said Mortal Kombat 1 was the best-selling game on PlayStation platforms in September and ranked second on Xbox and PC. Year-to-date U.S. video game sales through September 2023 totaled $39.380 billion, up 2% year over year. Piscatella, Circana’s executive producer for games reports, said, “Growth in digital premium download spending across console & PC drove most of the gains,” as quoted in GamesBeat’s October 19 report.
