For most new players in 2026, start with Retail World of Warcraft and buy Midnight only when you want its level-80–90 content. A subscription or Game Time unlocks the free game beyond level 20, every previous expansion through level 80, the current Classic versions, and World of Warcraft: Forever when it launches on 4 November 2026. Midnight is sold separately. You do not need to play older expansions in release order, install combat add-ons, or own a console: WoW is officially a Windows and Mac game, and your Battle.net region determines where your characters and friends can meet.
Which World of Warcraft version should a beginner start with?
Choose the version that matches the experience you want rather than trying to play every WoW era. Retail is the default for current story and modern group tools; Classic is for a specific historical ruleset; Forever is a new 1–60 world with classic foundations and its own rulesets.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Version | What you get | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail: Midnight | Current level 1–90 game, Dragonflight and The War Within progression, Housing, Delves, Mythic+, Warbands and ongoing patches | Players who want the live story and the largest set of group-finding tools | Midnight must be purchased for levels 80–90 and its features |
| Classic | Separate characters and progression in active versions such as Classic Era, Anniversary Classic, Season of Discovery, Mists of Pandaria Classic and Hardcore | Players seeking a particular older ruleset or slower, social leveling | Classic characters do not share progression with Retail and grouping is realm-locked |
| World of Warcraft: Forever | Reimagined original 1–60 Azeroth, more than 1,000 new quests, nine new dungeons, new race/class combinations and Rulesets | Players who want a fresh classic-style launch without buying Midnight | Launches 4 November 2026; optional Skyborne content is paid |
Start with Retail if you are unsure
Retail is the safest first choice when friends play the current game or you want Dungeon Finder, cross-realm activities, Housing, Delves, Mythic+ and the continuing Worldsoul Saga. The subscription covers the game through level 80; Midnight adds the level-80–90 campaign and expansion features.
Choose Classic for a deliberate historical experience
Classic versions run alongside Retail with separate characters. The active lineup changes, so check the Battle.net launcher before creating a character. Hardcore is particularly demanding because a character’s journey can end permanently on death; it is a poor choice for a first WoW character unless that rule is the attraction.

Choose Forever for a new classic-style community
Forever launches on 4 November 2026 and is included with an active subscription or Game Time. It is not a replacement for Midnight: it is a parallel 1–60 game with Normal, PvP, Roleplay and Roleplay-PvP Rulesets. Hardcore is planned for later, but Blizzard has not given a date.
Do I have to play every old expansion before Midnight?
No. Retail’s 2026 newcomer route skips the release-order campaign. After the Exile’s Reach tutorial, the guided path runs through Dragonflight to level 70, an accelerated version of The War Within to level 80, and Midnight from 80 to 90 if you own it.
- Exile’s Reach: the introductory zone, generally levels 1–10.
- Dragonflight: the recommended story route to level 70, including Story Mode raids that let you follow the narrative without a traditional raid group.
- The War Within: an accelerated campaign from level 70 to 80, covering Isle of Dorn through K’aresh.
- Midnight: the current 80–90 story in Quel’Thalas and the Voidstorm, requiring a separate purchase.
Story Mode is available for Dragonflight and The War Within raid encounters. It can be completed solo or with up to four friends, with the emphasis on seeing the story rather than mastering normal raid mechanics.
What the expansion timeline means
Release order is useful for history, not for deciding what to play first. The following caps are the caps when each expansion shipped; later level squishes changed the numbers.
| Era | Release date | Cap at release |
|---|---|---|
| World of Warcraft (base) | 23 November 2004 | 60 |
| The Burning Crusade | 16 January 2007 | 70 |
| Wrath of the Lich King | 13 November 2008 | 80 |
| Cataclysm | 7 December 2010 | 85 |
| Mists of Pandaria | 25 September 2012 | 90 |
| Warlords of Draenor | 13 November 2014 | 100 |
| Legion | 30 August 2016 | 110 |
| Battle for Azeroth | 14 August 2018 (13 August in North America) | 120 |
| Shadowlands | 23 November 2020 | 60 after the level squish |
| Dragonflight | 28 November 2022 | 70 |
| The War Within | 26 August 2024 | 80 |
| Midnight | 2 March 2026 | 90 |
There are 11 expansion packs after the 2004 base game as of 2026. The announced finale, The Last Titan, has no confirmed release window, so it should not affect a new player’s current route.
Can I try World of Warcraft without paying?
Yes. The Starter Edition lets you play Retail content and eligible dungeons up to level 20, with restrictions on some social features. A subscription or Game Time removes the level-20 ceiling and unlocks levels 21–80, higher-level dungeons and raids, guilds, unrestricted chat and the Auction House. Midnight remains a separate purchase.

What a subscription includes
- Modern WoW content from level 1 through 80, including every expansion before Midnight.
- Included Classic versions, with separate characters and progression.
- World of Warcraft: Forever from its 4 November 2026 launch.
Blizzard’s shop describes this as access to levels 1–80 in modern WoW, 1–60 in Classic and 1–90 in Mists of Pandaria Classic. Exact Classic phases can change, so the launcher is the current authority.

A late-October catalogue sale listed Midnight Base at $24.99, 50% off, through 2 November 2026. Treat that as a dated promotion, not the normal price. A US month-one start at list price is $64.98: $14.99 for a subscription plus $49.99 for Midnight Base. How do I install and start WoW?
You need a Battle.net account, a Windows or Mac computer, broadband internet, and enough SSD space. Start with the free Starter Edition if you want to confirm the region and client before paying.
Retail or Classic
- Download and install the Battle.net desktop app for Windows or Mac.
- Create or sign in to your Battle.net account.
- Select World of Warcraft in the app.
- Under Version, choose modern World of Warcraft or the Classic version you want. If your account has several WoW licenses, select the correct one.
- Install, select a realm that matches your friends, and click Play.
Forever
- Create a Battle.net account and enable two-factor authentication.
- Start a subscription or add Game Time; Forever access is included.
- In the launcher, select World of Warcraft: Forever, install it and click Play.
- Choose the Classic or Enhanced presentation preset, then select a Ruleset, faction and character.
Forever’s Early Name Reservation ran from 27 October through 3 November 2026. Its two-name system uses a main and secondary name; the complete combination must be unique within your region.

The current Retail cap is 90 in Midnight. Characters without Midnight can level through 80, while Forever and most Classic experiences use their own progression scales rather than Retail’s 90-level cap.
Retail’s cap is not a requirement to buy immediately. You can complete the free trial to 20, subscribe and experience the 1–80 game, then purchase Midnight when you want its campaign, Housing and level-80–90 endgame. Housing requires Midnight.

Which server, realm or Ruleset should I pick?
Ask your friends for their Battle.net region first, then their game version, realm or Ruleset, and faction. Those choices determine whether your characters can meet.
Regions are a hard boundary
US, Europe, Korea, Taiwan and other Battle.net regions do not share characters, progression or transfers. Blizzard Support states that a Battle.net account can contain WoW accounts in multiple regions, but progress is not shared and characters cannot be transferred between regions. Create the Starter Edition in the region your friends already use; a code bought for the wrong region cannot be swapped by customer support.
Retail realm types
| Choice | How it works | Good starting point for |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Zones are generally safe from player attacks unless you activate War Mode; enemy-faction cities automatically flag you | Most new players |
| RP | Uses Normal rules with role-playing naming and behavior expectations; it does not provide open-world PvP | Players who want an in-character community |
| War Mode | An opt-in switch at the bottom of the Talents interface from level 20; activate in a faction capital and deactivate at any rest location | Players who want open-world PvP on a modern realm |
Retail’s modern tools support many cross-realm and cross-faction activities, but not every queue or feature works identically. Matching friends’ region and realm remains the simplest setup.
Classic realm choice
Classic grouping is realm-locked: characters can group only with players on the same realm. Confirm the exact Classic version and realm before creating characters, because a character in Classic Era is not a character in Anniversary Classic or Retail.
Forever Rulesets
| Ruleset | Rules |
|---|---|
| Normal | Adventure and fight monsters; PvP is discretionary |
| PvP | Opposing players can attack you through much of the world |
| Roleplay | Immersion-focused naming and behavior rules |
| Roleplay-PvP | Roleplay rules combined with near-constant open-world PvP risk |
| Hardcore | Planned for later; death ends the character’s journey, with timing not announced |
Forever characters can group, join guilds, run dungeons and raid only with players on the same Ruleset and faction. Blizzard recommends Normal and the Enhanced preset when you are unsure; both presets can be changed later under Game Menu > Options.
Can I play WoW with friends on another platform or region?
There is no Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo version, so there is no console-to-PC cross-play. Official WoW platforms are Windows and Mac. Forever has beta controller support on those computers, but that is not a console release.

Cross-region play is also unavailable: a US character cannot group with an EU character, and characters cannot be transferred between those regions. Within a region, Retail offers many cross-realm and cross-faction activities; Classic requires the same realm; Forever requires the same Ruleset and faction. Start by joining the same region and client, then coordinate realm or Ruleset.
Are add-ons required to level, dungeon or raid?
No. You can start, run dungeons and raid in Midnight with the default interface. Blizzard’s Midnight policy prevents add-ons from gaining a competitive combat advantage, while preserving cosmetic and layout customization.
What Midnight changed
Combat-state information is treated as a secret value. Add-ons can change the size, position and appearance of information, but cannot reliably inspect the hidden combat state to drive an automated rotation or encounter response.
- Cooldown Manager: tracks important cooldowns in the native interface.
- Boss Warnings: presents a timeline of upcoming mechanics while leaving the response to you.
- Damage Meters: built in with server-side validation.
- Combat Audio Alerts and text-to-speech: announce health and common combat events.
- Assisted Highlight and One-Button Rotation: help new or accessibility-focused players learn a specialization.
- Healer raid frames: improved in the default UI.
Cosmetic and presentation add-ons remain supported. Blizzard’s game director has specifically described tools such as ElvUI, Console Port and Bartender as customization examples, while WeakAuras-style combat-driven displays are the restricted category. Add-on usage is still common—Ion Hazzikostas estimated that roughly 65%–70% of players use at least one, with damage meters the most popular type—but that is his estimate, not a census.
A sensible first-day setup
- Keep the default interface until a specific problem appears.
- Make enemy cast bars visible and bind an interrupt and a defensive ability where you can reach them.
- Use clear quest and map markers.
- If you later need bag, collection or cosmetic changes, install a current version through a maintained manager such as CurseForge or WoWUp and check compatibility after major patches.
Old 2025 UI packs and combat imports may fail under Midnight’s API rules. Do not treat WeakAuras, DBM or Details! as entry requirements for Retail raiding.

Do Retail, Classic and Forever share characters or items?
No. Each client has separate characters and progression, and characters cannot transfer between Retail, Classic and Forever. Retail Warbands do share many collections, transmog appearances and currencies across characters on that Retail account; that account-wide system does not merge the separate game versions.
Forever’s Skyborne race requires the Heroic Pack or higher. Skyborne can be Horde Shaman, Alliance Mage, or either-faction Druid, Hunter, Rogue or Warrior. Forever also adds combinations absent from original WoW, including Alliance Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman and Gnome Priest, plus Horde Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin.

What are the most common beginner mistakes?
- Choosing the wrong region: verify US, Europe, Korea or Taiwan before upgrading or buying a code.
- Buying Midnight too early: the subscription already covers levels 1–80 and Classic; purchase Midnight when you want its content.
- Creating a character on the wrong realm: Classic grouping requires the same realm, and Forever requires the same Ruleset and faction.
- Assuming console support exists: WoW is Windows and Mac only; Forever’s controller option is beta software support, not a console client.
- Installing a large add-on pack on day one: start with native alerts, cooldowns and meters, then add only current tools that solve a real interface problem.
- Expecting the level cap to be shared: Retail’s 90, Classic caps and Forever’s 1–60 world are separate systems.
New Retail players are placed in Newcomer Chat until level 50. Veteran guides are marked in chat and with icons; eligible guides have a level-80 character, 3,000 completed quests, an account in good standing and can be found through recruiters in Stormwind and Orgrimmar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep WoW accounts in both the US and Europe?
Yes, one Battle.net login can contain WoW accounts in multiple regions. Each region needs its own license or purchase path, and characters, achievements and progression remain separate; there is no cross-region character transfer.
When exactly does World of Warcraft: Forever become available?
The official shop lists 4 November 2026, with the subscription-page note giving an expected 3:00 p.m. Pacific launch time. The optional Skyborne packs are not required to enter Forever, so a normal subscription or Game Time is enough for the base experience.
Can I hide the second name in Forever’s naming system?
Yes. Forever’s secondary name can be hidden on nameplates, although it still appears in chat. The full main-plus-secondary combination must remain unique in your region.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is Hardcore a sensible first character?
Usually not. Hardcore is designed around permanent consequences, so a single mistake can end the character’s run; begin on Normal unless that risk is the specific reason you want the mode.
Does Blizzard publish an exact current player count?
No dated official concurrent-player or subscriber census is established here. Phrases such as “millions of players” are marketing language rather than a year-specific population measurement.
