State of Decay 3’s confirmed co-op model is a shared survivor community for up to four players total. Each player can recruit survivors, run missions and manage settlements, rather than appearing only as a temporary sidekick. The closed beta, opened October 13, 2026, describes groups running as many as three settlements and moving survivors between them. Because the game is still in beta and targets a 2027 release, menus, save rules, limits and resource numbers can change. The most reliable way to play is to divide responsibilities: keep facilities staffed, food and water flowing, enclaves supported and plague threats away from settlements while treating every expedition as potentially permanent.
What is the State of Decay 3 co-op format?
State of Decay 3 supports solo play and a shared-world online mode for two to four players. In practical terms, one player can host a community with up to three friends, and the group’s decisions shape the same survivor network. The Xbox store lists online co-op for 2–4 players and Xbox cross-platform co-op; Xbox Wire and Undead Labs describe the limit as four players or one player plus three friends.

Undead Labs’ closed-beta description gives every co-op participant broad access to the world. Players can recruit survivors, undertake missions and manage settlements independently. That is different from a mode in which one person owns all progress and the others merely accompany the host. The final permission system, however, has not been published, so “full access” should not be read as proof that launch will have no locks or safeguards.
Is State of Decay 3 released yet?
No. As of October 30, 2026, State of Decay 3 is not generally available. Undead Labs opened a closed beta on October 13, 2026, and the official beta announcement says the build is still being tuned. Xbox material targets a 2027 release. Creative director Kevin Patzelt stated: “We’ve been working on this for a while and we’re aiming for a 2027 release.”

That status matters when following any co-op guide. The systems below are the behavior and design direction officially described for the beta, not a promise that every number or menu will be identical at launch.
How do I start a shared community with friends?
The broad sequence is clear, but the exact invite, join and resume screens are not. No cited official page publishes a button-by-button menu path, host requirement or save-ownership rule. When access is available, use the game’s online co-op flow to bring friends into the same shared community, then agree on responsibilities before splitting up.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Choose the community and home location together. Where the group lives is presented as a consequential decision, so discuss access to resources, defensibility and room for facilities before committing.
- Set a first operating plan. Decide who watches the settlement, who gathers supplies, who handles enclaves and who responds to urgent threats. These are coordination jobs, not confirmed character classes.
- Recruit carefully. Survivors are persistent members of the community, and permadeath makes reckless recruitment or mission assignments expensive.
- Establish a return route. Use outposts to swap survivors, deposit loot and rearm away from home while another player keeps the settlement supplied.
- Expand only when the network can support it. The beta allows up to three settlements, but each additional location adds staffing, defense and supply-line work.
The game has not confirmed whether an approved friend can launch the community while the original creator is offline, how cloud persistence works or how conflicting changes are resolved. Treat those as questions to verify in the final release rather than assumptions to build a campaign around.
Can co-op players run different bases?
Yes, the beta announcement says the group can run up to three settlements and move survivors between them freely. One player can operate one base while a friend operates another, or everyone can concentrate on a single location. The sources do not describe formal ownership of a settlement, so the strategic split is a player-agreed arrangement rather than a published permission system.
One settlement: concentrated control
A single base keeps facilities, defenders, supplies and decision-making in one place. It is easier for a new group to see shortages and respond to an attack, but everyone is competing for the same local jobs and missions. If the location is blockaded, the whole community feels the disruption.
Multiple settlements: reach with overhead
Two or three bases can cover more territory and let players work in parallel. The trade-off is operational: each site needs suitable survivors, functioning facilities, protection and a dependable supply line. Moving survivors between settlements is confirmed; the time, cost and detailed limits of those transfers are not.

| Two settlements | Parallel projects and a second operating location | More facilities and supply lines to maintain | Teams with enough survivors to staff both sites |
| Three settlements | Maximum beta network size and broadest coverage | Highest coordination and defense workload | Established communities with reliable food, water and specialists |
How should a four-player group divide the work?
The game does not publish classes or locked permissions. The following four jobs are a practical coordination model inferred from the documented systems; any player can switch jobs at any time.

Settlement operator
Monitor facility operation, staffing, food, water, morale and defenses. Check whether the community can afford to keep every facility active before approving another construction project.
Quartermaster and scavenger
Keep the supply pipeline moving, collect useful loot and return it to an outpost or settlement. This player should report shortages early rather than waiting for rations to fail.
Recruiter and scout
Work with enclaves, assess potential recruits and map safer routes. Because an enclave’s needs and story can unlock better deals, radio commands, supply-locker access or a full-enclave recruitment option, this role should not treat every encounter as a fight.
Risk team
Handle plague threats, high-value missions and emergency defense. Keep an experienced survivor available for urgent work instead of sending the entire skilled roster into one dangerous objective.
With fewer than four players, combine jobs rather than duplicating them. Two players can share settlement and logistics while the other handles recruitment and threat response. The goal is coverage, not a permanent party composition.
What resources should co-op teams protect first?
Food and water are daily rations in the beta, and deprivation reduces health and stamina. Water also supports crafting and facilities, so it is a cross-system resource rather than a simple upkeep number. Resources tick down smoothly through the day, allowing the group to watch its position instead of waiting for one periodic deduction.
- Check food and water before long expeditions. A mission that looks profitable can leave the home community weakened if nobody covers the burn rate.
- Assign one player to near-term field logistics. That player gathers, deposits and reports supplies while another watches facility operation and resource consumption.
- Staff harvest sites. Harvest sites provide ongoing resources when staffed and protected; an unattended or threatened site is not reliable income.
- Use outposts as logistics points. Outposts allow survivor swaps, loot deposits and rearming away from home, reducing unnecessary trips to the main settlement.
- Account for operating cost. Beta facilities are cheaper to build but more expensive to keep running. The community may own more facilities than it can operate simultaneously.
The official material does not provide final ration rates, storage limits or exact facility costs. Do not plan around a beta number surviving into launch.

How do facilities and survivor expertise affect a settlement?
Facilities are not simply permanent upgrades. In the beta, the important decision is whether the community has the people and resources to operate them. Undead Labs specifically describes expertise as decisive: an agriculture specialist or construction specialist can change a struggling settlement’s prospects.
- Identify the community’s immediate bottleneck. If food is falling, prioritize agricultural capability; if construction or repairs are limiting growth, seek the relevant expertise.
- Match specialists to the facility they improve. A facility without the right survivor may be less valuable than a simpler building that the current roster can run well.
- Compare upkeep with benefit. Because operating costs are higher than building costs in the beta, pause or deprioritize facilities that the community cannot support continuously.
- Keep a staffing reserve. Do not assign every specialist to a facility if doing so leaves no capable survivor for scouting, defense or emergency missions.
How do enclaves and recruitment work in co-op?
Enclaves have their own needs, settlements and stories. Meeting those needs can lead to better trades, radio commands, access to a supply locker and the option to bring an entire enclave into the community. A recruiter should therefore track relationships while the rest of the group handles immediate supplies.
Recruitment is a community decision, not just a way to add another playable body. Evaluate the survivor’s expertise, health, stamina and likely role against current facility and expedition needs. A large roster increases options, but it also increases food and water demand. Agree on a recruitment threshold so one player does not expand the population faster than the settlement can feed it.
How do plague threats affect shared settlements?
Plague Nests can grow networks of plague hearts toward settlements. If a network gets close, it can blockade a settlement, disrupt supply lines, take harvest sites offline and damage settlement faith. These effects turn a local threat into a network problem, especially when the group operates more than one base.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Keep threat information shared. The player scouting a plague area should report its direction and urgency before the group commits to another project.
- Protect the links between bases. A settlement that looks well supplied on paper can still fail if a blockade cuts its route or takes a harvest site offline.
- Maintain a response reserve. Leave capable survivors, medical supplies and equipment available for emergency defense rather than assigning everyone to routine missions.
- Reassess expansion after a threat appears. A second or third settlement is useful only if the group can defend the whole network.
The official descriptions establish these consequences but do not publish final detection ranges, attack timers or the exact method for removing a plague network.
How should co-op teams handle permadeath?
Permadeath makes every survivor and mission choice consequential. A failed expedition can permanently remove a specialist, not merely impose a temporary respawn delay. Before leaving, decide what the mission is worth, who has the right skills and what happens if the lead survivor is lost.
Use a risk ladder
- Routine supply run: send a capable but non-critical survivor and set a clear return point.
- Valuable recruitment or enclave mission: bring the equipment and backup needed to preserve a relationship or recruit.
- Plague or high-value objective: use the group’s strongest preparation and avoid sending irreplaceable specialists together.
Do not treat the risk team as disposable. Rotate experienced survivors, maintain a reserve and tell the settlement operator when a mission has crossed from routine to existential.

Is solo play or shared-world co-op better?
Neither mode is universally better. Solo play gives one person complete control over priorities; shared-world co-op trades that simplicity for parallel work and broader coverage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Choice | Advantages | Trade-offs |

| Solo | One decision-maker, consistent priorities and no scheduling dependency | One player must cover scouting, logistics, facilities and defense |
| Shared-world co-op | Up to four players can recruit, run missions and manage settlements in parallel | Shared decisions, communication overhead and collective consequences when a plan fails |
Choose co-op when the group can communicate and assign coverage. Choose solo when you want every settlement, recruit and risk decision to follow one uninterrupted plan.

Official Xbox material advertises Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC versions, with day-one Game Pass availability on the 2027 release page. Xbox Wire also says the game is planned for Steam and PlayStation 5. The Xbox store lists Xbox cross-platform co-op and says online console multiplayer requires a platform subscription that includes online multiplayer.
The complete cross-platform matrix has not been specified by the cited pages. Do not promise that every combination of Xbox, Windows PC storefronts, Steam and PlayStation 5 will share one lobby until Microsoft or Undead Labs publishes that confirmation. Game Pass availability is advertised for launch, but regional catalog terms can differ.
What is still unknown about State of Decay 3 co-op?
Several details that matter to long campaigns remain unpublished:
- The exact invite, join, resume and shared-community menu flow.
- Whether approved players can launch the world when the original creator is offline.
- Who owns saves, how cloud persistence works and how simultaneous changes are resolved.
- Whether the final game adds permissions, locks, role restrictions or resource safeguards despite the beta’s broad-access description.
- Whether the beta’s settlement cap, resource rates, facility costs and other numerical rules remain unchanged.
Until those details are official, explain the shared-world concept confidently but avoid presenting a specific host or save procedure as fact.
What should a group agree on before its first session?
- Who makes the final call when food, water and a mission objective compete.
- Whether the group starts with one settlement or expands only after a defined resource reserve.
- Which survivors are considered too valuable for high-risk missions.
- Who responds to plague threats and who remains at home to keep facilities operating.
- How the group handles recruitment when extra survivors increase daily rations.
- How often players report loot, injuries, enclave requests and changes to supply lines.
This agreement prevents the most common shared-world failure: four players making individually sensible choices that collectively leave the community understaffed, undersupplied or exposed.

How we interpret the beta guidance
The recommendations here use the systems Undead Labs and Xbox have described: four-player shared-world co-op, broad player access, up to three beta settlements, survivor movement, operating costs, expertise, enclave relationships, resource depletion, outposts, harvest sites, plague networks and permadeath. Strategic advice about role division, expansion timing and risk ladders is editorial analysis of those systems, not a claim that the game assigns formal jobs or enforces a particular play style. Recheck official release notes before relying on exact limits or menu instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can State of Decay 3 co-op players use different platforms?
Xbox lists cross-platform co-op, but the cited announcements do not spell out every Xbox, PC, Steam and PlayStation 5 pairing. Wait for a final compatibility chart before planning a group across all four platforms.
Can a friend continue the shared community without the host?
The published material does not establish offline launching, host requirements or save ownership. Those rules need confirmation from the final game or an updated official support page.
Will the beta’s three-settlement limit be the launch limit?
Not necessarily. Undead Labs describes up to three settlements in the closed beta and warns that numbers can change while the team tunes the game.
Do all players get administrator permissions in the shared world?
The beta description says every player has full access to recruit, run missions and manage settlements. It does not confirm whether launch adds permission controls, locks or safeguards.
What happens if food or water runs out during a mission?
The beta description says deprivation harms health and stamina, while water also supports crafting and facilities. Exact depletion thresholds, alerts and recovery actions have not been published.
