Steam and itch.io give buyers different ways to identify generative AI use; GOG’s current official disclosure position could not be verified. Steam collects information from developers about AI-created content that ships with a game, distinguishing material made during development from content generated while the game runs. itch.io asks creators to use an AI Disclosure section and says disclosed projects appear on an AI-assisted browse page. These systems do not establish that every AI tool used in production will be visible to buyers, and the absence of a label is not proof that a game used no AI. This comparison reflects official platform materials checked on October 25, 2026.
What can buyers compare across Steam, itch.io, and GOG?
The clearest comparison is between what each platform asks developers to disclose, where that information may appear, and what the platform says it does about compliance. Steam describes a developer survey tied to the game’s shipped content and review process. itch.io describes a project-level disclosure and browse-page tag, with specific enforcement for game asset pages. For GOG, a current official rule or buyer-facing disclosure field could not be verified from the official materials located for this comparison.

That difference matters when interpreting a store page. A label or disclosed use is information about the content or experience described by the platform; it is not necessarily a full inventory of every tool used to make a game. Conversely, a missing label cannot safely be read as proof that no generative AI was used.
| Platform | What official materials describe | What a buyer may see | Runtime generation | Enforcement described |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Developers complete a Steamworks Content Survey before submitting the store page and product build for review. Its generative-AI section focuses on AI-created content that ships with the game and is consumed by players, rather than efficiency gains from AI-powered production tools. | Valve says survey responses help customers understand product content. The documentation does not, in the material located for this comparison, establish a particular public badge or its precise placement on every store page. | Classified as “Live-Generated”; developers must describe safeguards intended to prevent illegal output. | Valve says survey answers are considered in prerelease review and compared with the submitted build and store page. It does not describe the survey as a complete audit of every development tool. |
| itch.io | Creators are asked to disclose generative-AI-produced materials using the AI Disclosure section on a project’s edit page. | itch.io says disclosed projects appear on an AI-assisted browse page. An itch.io administrator’s November 20, 2024 announcement described an AI Generated tag or No AI tag based on the creator’s declaration; current practical guidance is the platform’s creator guidelines. | Guidance covers generative AI. Ordinary game systems such as NPC pathfinding and procedural level generation are specifically distinguished from generative AI. | itch.io says disclosure is strictly enforced for game asset pages; an untagged asset page may be delisted. Its quality guidance also cautions against excessive, minimally curated AI output and mass-produced pages. |
| GOG | A current official generative-AI disclosure rule was not verified in the official materials located for this comparison. | Whether a required disclosure field or standard buyer-facing label exists is not verified from an official source here. | Not verified from an official source. | Not verified from an official source. Lack of verification does not establish that GOG has no policy. |
The platforms’ materials therefore support different levels of confidence: Steam and itch.io describe disclosure mechanisms, though not identical ones; the GOG entry remains an evidence gap rather than a claim about what GOG does or does not require. Store policies and interfaces can change, so the date of this comparison is important.

What does Steam’s AI disclosure cover?
Steam’s official Steamworks Content Survey focuses on generative AI used to create content that ships with the game and is consumed by players. Valve explicitly says efficiency gains from using AI tools are not the focus of this section.
For buyers, that means the relevant distinction is not simply “Was AI used anywhere in development?” The survey is framed around content in the product, including examples such as artwork, sound, narrative, and localization. A developer’s use of an AI-powered tool to work more efficiently is not, by itself, the kind of use this disclosure section says it is focused on. That scope should not be mistaken for a guarantee that a store page reveals every tool in a studio’s workflow.
Pre-generated content
Steam calls AI-assisted material created during development and included in the game “Pre-Generated.” The material is made before the player encounters it, then ships as part of the game and is consumed by players. Artwork, sound, narrative, and localization are examples of content categories addressed by the survey.
Live-generated content
Steam calls AI content produced while the game is running “Live-Generated.” A game that generates material during play is therefore treated differently from one that ships with AI-created assets already prepared. Valve says developers must describe safeguards intended to prevent illegal output for live-generated content.
Valve also says it does not want to ship live-generated AI adult-only sexual content at this time. This is a stated platform position about that category, not a general description of all runtime-generated content or a buyer-facing label.
How does Steam use the survey, and what does it not prove?
Developers complete the Steamworks Content Survey before submitting a store page and product build for review. Valve says the survey supports prerelease review and helps customers understand how a product’s content may match their expectations and preferences.

Valve says reviewers compare survey responses with the submitted build and store page. It also says AI-generated output is evaluated under the same stated content commitments as non-AI output, including commitments against illegal or infringing content and consistency with marketing. For live generation, the developer must describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal output.

This connects disclosure to both review and buyer information, but it is not evidence that Valve audits every AI tool used in production or independently verifies every developer’s process. Nor does the available material establish that every survey answer appears to buyers in a uniform, prominent badge. A disclosure is useful information within the survey’s stated scope; it should not be overread as a complete provenance report.
Valve notes that some survey results cannot be edited after approval without contacting Steam Support. That is a developer-side process detail, not a way for a buyer to verify a particular game’s assets or tools.
Where is the AI disclosure on itch.io?
itch.io’s creator guidance directs developers to the AI Disclosure section on the project edit page. It asks creators to accurately tag projects containing material produced by generative AI, and says disclosed projects appear on an AI-assisted browse page.
An itch.io administrator’s developer announcement dated November 20, 2024 described the disclosure field as having sub-tags for graphics, sound, text and dialog, and code. In that announcement, declaring yes added an AI Generated tag, while declaring no added a No AI tag. That announcement documents the feature’s announced design; for current practical expectations, itch.io’s current creator guidance is the more relevant source.
What itch.io counts as generative AI
itch.io describes generative AI in terms of systems that create new content by learning from large datasets. Its guidance distinguishes these systems from traditional game AI and self-contained algorithms. Examples it says do not need the generative-AI tags include:
- NPC pathfinding
- Procedural level generation
- Fuzzy logic
- Dynamic difficulty adjustment
- Dynamic music
So the presence of procedural or adaptive behavior in a game does not, by itself, mean that the creator guidance treats it as generative AI. The distinction is about the kind of system and how content is produced, not merely whether a game changes in response to a player.
What itch.io says about enforcement and quality
itch.io says it is strictly enforcing disclosure for game asset pages because of legal ambiguity around rights associated with generative-AI content. The platform warns that an untagged asset page may be delisted. Its quality guidance also discourages excessive, minimally curated AI-generated content and automated mass production of pages.

The platform’s creator guidance says: “If your project involves automatic or AI generation, make sure it’s clearly stated in your project description and that it adds substantial value to the user experience.” This reinforces that a disclosure field is not the only relevant consideration in its guidance: creators are also asked to be clear in the project description and to offer meaningful value.
Do GOG game pages disclose AI use?
A current official GOG developer document or GOG statement establishing a mandatory generative-AI disclosure field on game pages could not be verified for this comparison. The accurate conclusion is that GOG’s rule and buyer-facing presentation are unconfirmed here—not that GOG has no policy.
A secondary article surfaced in a broad search, but it does not establish GOG’s current rule and should not substitute for an official platform statement. Buyers seeking a definitive answer for a particular listing should look for current GOG developer documentation or a direct GOG statement. Until one is available, avoid treating either a missing label or an assumption based on another storefront as proof of GOG’s policy.
How should buyers interpret a missing AI label?
Interpret it narrowly: it means you have not found a disclosure in the places and forms described here, not that you have established how the game was made. Steam’s survey scope is focused on shipped, player-consumed generative-AI content rather than efficiency gains from production tools; itch.io’s guidance asks for project disclosures and identifies certain non-generative systems that do not need the tags; GOG’s current official position remains unverified in this comparison.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhen checking a game, separate three questions:
- Is there disclosed generative-AI content? Look for the relevant store or browse-page information and read the creator’s description rather than inferring details from a label alone.
- Does the platform’s definition cover the feature you are concerned about? A pre-made AI-created asset, a runtime-generated response, a development productivity tool, and procedural game logic are not interchangeable categories in the policies described above.
- Is the platform’s policy established by a current official source? Steam and itch.io publish relevant guidance; a current official GOG disclosure rule was not verified for this comparison.
These distinctions help avoid two common mistakes: assuming any use of AI in development must be disclosed in the same way, and treating no visible label as proof of no AI involvement. A platform’s own stated scope is the best guide to what a disclosure can tell you.
A practical checking routine for buyers
Use the same questions on each storefront, but do not expect the answers to appear in the same place or carry the same meaning.
- Start with the game’s own listing. Read its description and any disclosure information the storefront presents. On itch.io, creator guidance points to project disclosure and says disclosed projects appear on an AI-assisted browse page. On Steam, Valve says survey responses help customers understand product content, but the official documentation located here does not establish one universal badge placement. Do not assume the absence of an obvious icon settles the question.
- Identify what kind of AI use is being discussed. Is the concern about an asset or text prepared before release, output generated during play, an efficiency tool used by developers, or an ordinary game system such as pathfinding? Steam explicitly distinguishes pre-generated and live-generated content and says production efficiency is not the focus of its survey section. itch.io explicitly excludes examples such as procedural level generation from its generative-AI tags.
- Check the platform’s stated scope, not just a label’s wording. A tag can tell you that a creator made a declaration, but the platform rules determine what the declaration covers. For itch.io, the 2024 feature announcement described yes/no tags and content sub-tags; current creator guidance supplies the practical direction. For Steam, the survey is connected to prerelease review and the submitted build and store page.
- Keep uncertainty visible. If a GOG listing has no disclosure, that does not confirm either AI use or non-use, and it does not settle GOG’s policy. The official position could not be verified here; a current official GOG statement or developer document is needed for a definitive platform-level answer.
This routine is most useful when the buyer’s concern is specific. Someone who wants to avoid runtime-generated dialogue, for example, should not treat an AI-created background image as an answer to that separate question. Likewise, a disclosure that concerns shipped assets does not necessarily inventory internal tools used by the studio. The platforms’ definitions allow a more precise question than a simple “AI or no AI?”

What do these systems not let buyers compare?
They do not create a uniform cross-storefront rating. Steam’s survey and itch.io’s disclosure field are different mechanisms, and the material described here does not establish that their labels map one-to-one. A “No AI” declaration described in itch.io’s 2024 announcement is not equivalent to a complete independent audit, and Steam’s survey is not described as a complete record of every development tool. GOG cannot be placed on an equivalent scale without a verified current policy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Nor do the available platform statements supply a common threshold for how much AI-created content must be present before a buyer should consider a game AI-assisted. Avoid converting broad terms such as “AI use” into a percentage or ranking that the platforms have not established. What buyers can compare reliably is the disclosed scope, the mechanism each platform describes, whether runtime generation is addressed, and the enforcement language the platform publishes.
Enforcement also differs in what is specifically described. itch.io singles out game asset pages and says an untagged page may be delisted, while its creator guidance separately warns against excessive minimally curated content and automated mass production. Steam connects survey answers to prerelease review, build, and store-page comparison. These statements should not be stretched into claims about penalties or audit practices that the platforms have not described here.
What are the practical differences for a buyer?
Steam offers a policy framework with a defined split between AI-created content prepared during development and content generated while the game runs. itch.io presents a more direct creator-facing disclosure mechanism, a browse destination for disclosed projects, and explicit enforcement language for game asset pages. GOG cannot be compared on equivalent terms until a current official policy or page feature is established.
These are not interchangeable labels that guarantee the same information across storefronts. Steam explains why its survey exists and what it covers; itch.io describes tagging and enforcement; for GOG, the appropriate buyer stance is uncertainty. For any platform, the disclosure should be read as information about the platform’s stated categories rather than a universal certification of a game’s full development history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Steam AI disclosure mean a game was made entirely with AI?
No. Steam’s survey focuses on generative AI used to create content that ships with the game and is consumed by players; it does not claim to document every tool or production task used to make the game.
Does Steam require developers to disclose AI tools used only to work more efficiently?
Valve says efficiency gains from AI-powered tools are not the focus of the generative-AI section. The section focuses on content that ships with the game and is consumed by players, such as artwork, sound, narrative, and localization.

Does procedural generation count as generative AI on itch.io?
Not necessarily. itch.io’s guidance specifically gives procedural level generation as an example of a self-contained algorithm that does not need the generative-AI tags.
Where do creators disclose AI use on itch.io?
The creator guidance directs them to the AI Disclosure section on the project edit page. itch.io says disclosed projects appear on an AI-assisted browse page.
Can an itch.io game asset page be removed for missing disclosure?
itch.io says disclosure is strictly enforced for game asset pages and warns that an untagged asset page may be delisted.
Can I tell whether a game uses AI from its GOG page?
This comparison could not verify a current official GOG disclosure rule or standard buyer-facing field. A specific page’s silence should not be treated as evidence of GOG’s overall policy or of the game’s production methods.
Are Steam’s AI survey answers editable after a game is approved?
Valve says some survey results cannot be edited after approval without contacting Steam Support. That qualification concerns the developer’s survey process, not a buyer-facing method for checking a game.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Steam describes a developer survey focused on shipped generative-AI content, with separate treatment for pre-generated and live-generated material; itch.io provides a creator disclosure field and says disclosed projects appear on an AI-assisted browse page, while warning that untagged game asset pages may be delisted. GOG’s current official disclosure rule and buyer-facing presentation remain unverified here. Compare what each platform actually says, and treat a missing label as uncertainty—not proof that no AI was used.
