Steam has two separate protection systems: Backup game files preserves a Steam-managed installation so you can avoid a large download, while Steam Cloud synchronizes only the files a game developer selected. Neither reliably covers every save, mod, configuration, screenshot, or publisher-launcher file. For dependable protection, make a Steam installation backup, enable Cloud for supported games, and keep dated copies of each game’s actual save folder on a different physical drive.
What does a Steam backup include?
A Steam installation backup is designed for a fully downloaded, installed and patched game. It archives Steam-managed installation files for reinstalling later; it is not a complete snapshot of your player data. A game can keep saves and settings in Documents, AppData, a Proton prefix, a publisher launcher directory or another location that the archive does not contain.

Valve’s Backup game files feature applies to titles installed and updated through Steam. Games that use an external installer, download manager or updater, including some online games, may require the developer’s own export or backup procedure.
How do I back up Steam game files with the current client?
Use the game’s Installed Files page. This is the current Steam path and replaces older screenshots that start with a top-level Backup and Restore Games wizard.

- Open Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties….
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files.
- Click Browse… and choose a destination folder with enough free space.
- Wait for Steam to finish. If Steam offers Open folder, open the completed archive and copy it to a separate physical drive.
Finish pending updates before starting, close the game, and confirm the destination has room for the installed build. If Cloud matters for this title, launch while online first so any pending synchronization has a chance to complete.
What if my Steam client still shows the old backup wizard?
Some installations still display the older Steam > Backup currently installed programs and Steam > Restore a previous backup wording. It is the same general function, but use Library > Properties > Installed Files > Backup game files when that path is available.

How can I include custom content?
Valve’s example places custom files beneath the game directory, where the backup can see them:
cfgfor custom configurations and scriptsdownloadsfor custom multiplayer contentmapsfor downloaded or installed mapsmaterialsfor custom textures and skinsSAVEfor a single-player save, when that particular game uses it
This is an example, not a universal save rule. Preserve mods, mod-manager profiles, load orders, screenshots and publisher-launcher data separately. Workshop subscriptions can often be reacquired by subscribing again, but manually installed files and Workshop items that are no longer available will not return automatically.
How do I restore Steam game files from a backup?
Restore from the folder containing the completed Steam backup files, not from the root of an external drive that merely contains that folder.
- Install Steam and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Open Steam, then select Steam in the upper-left corner.
- Choose Restore Game Backup….
- Browse to the folder that actually contains the backup archive.
- Continue through Steam’s prompts and choose the destination Steam library.
Valve warns that a Steam installation path containing special characters, such as C:Steam安装路径Steam, can cause the restore to fail. An ASCII-only Steam path is safer when you expect to use this feature.

Can I restore by copying the game folder instead?
Yes. Steam games normally reside in a library’s steamapps/common directory. Copy the game’s folder to the same relative location on the replacement drive, click Install for that title in Steam, and point Steam at the library. Steam can discover the existing files instead of downloading the complete game. Afterward, use Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files to replace missing or damaged files.
Common default locations are:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common - Linux and SteamOS:
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common
Libraries can be moved, so confirm the real location under Steam > Settings > Storage. If a library appears intact but games will not launch, the Storage page’s three-dot menu includes Repair Library in clients that expose that command.

Does Steam Cloud back up all games and all saves?
No. Steam Cloud is per-game, developer-controlled synchronization, not a universal or versioned backup. Valve describes it as storing selected game files on Steam’s servers and downloading them before a supported game launches on another computer. A title may include saves, settings, profile statistics or other user files, while leaving out another save type, mods or screenshots.
The store-page Cloud indicator means the developer enabled Cloud for that title; it does not promise that every save slot or configuration file is included. Valve also advises developers to avoid machine-specific settings such as display resolution. Copying a desktop graphics configuration to a Steam Deck can produce unsuitable settings even when the save itself is valid.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Open Steam > Settings > Cloud.
- Turn on Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications which support it.
- In the Library, right-click the game and choose Properties….
- On General, enable Keep game saves in the Steam Cloud for [game].
Both switches must be on. A game that never implemented Cloud, or implemented it on only one operating system, still needs manual save copies.
What are Steam Cloud’s size limits?
Steamworks documents a current maximum of 100 MB per FileWrite or FileWriteStreamWriteChunk call. Files around 256 MB may be sent through a less optimal storage endpoint for a user’s location, which can reduce transfer performance. Developers set a per-user, per-game byte quota and file-count quota in Steamworks; Valve does not publish one player-facing quota for every game. A 2025 community example cites a 352 MB quota for Resident Evil 2, but that is one developer setting, not a Valve catalogue.
Valve notes that these limits may change. Large or numerous files therefore need the game developer’s current Cloud configuration rather than an assumption based on another title.
How do I download Steam Cloud saves manually?
Use Steam’s account storage page when you need a safety copy, a rollback, or a transfer after automatic synchronization fails: https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Sign in to the Steam account that owns the game.
- Find the title and choose Show Files.
- Download each listed file to a dated folder.
- Keep that copy before accepting a Cloud conflict or experimenting with Cloud disabled.
For a rollback, first copy the current local files somewhere safe. Turn Cloud off, place the downloaded files in the game’s real save location, and launch the game to confirm the older progress. Only after verification should you re-enable Cloud, allowing the restored set to upload.
Where are Steam Cloud files stored locally?
Valve’s usual userdata roots are:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux and SteamOS:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
Inside userdata are folders for each Steam account that has logged in, then a folder for each game’s AppID. Cloud files commonly sit in <AppID>/remote/. The parent AppID folder also contains remotecache.vdf and machine-specific achievement or playtime data.

Back up remote/ when you need the save files. Copy the parent AppID folder only when you intentionally need additional metadata. Find an AppID in the game’s Properties > Updates page or on its Steam store address. Steam may be installed outside the default path, so follow the library shown in Settings > Storage.
What should I do when Steam Cloud shows a conflict?
Do not immediately choose a side and continue playing. First preserve both versions, because Steam Cloud is synchronization rather than a multi-version archive and Valve’s Cloud service permanently deletes files without retaining prior versions.
- Quit the game and pause any further launches on other devices.
- Copy the local save folder and download the Cloud files from the remote-storage page.
- Label the copies with the device and date.
- Compare timestamps, slots and in-game progress where possible.
- Choose the version you want in Steam’s conflict dialog, then launch once to verify it.
No save utility can correctly merge two opaque, divergent game saves. Keeping both copies is the only way to preserve the alternative if the chosen version is wrong. A later upload can overwrite the other copy, so keep your dated files outside Steam’s live folders.
How do I back up Steam saves manually?
There is no universal Steam save directory. Check the game developer’s support documentation, then inspect these common locations:
- The game directory under
steamapps/common/<Game> DocumentsorDocumentsMy Games%APPDATA%and%LOCALAPPDATA%on Windows%USERPROFILE%Saved Gameson Windowsuserdata<SteamID><AppID>remote- A publisher-launcher directory
- A Proton prefix on Steam Deck or Linux
- Finish any Cloud synchronization and fully quit the game.
- Copy the suspected save folder; do not cut or move it.
- Leave the original in place so the game can continue using it.
- Name the copy with the game, machine and date.
- Keep multiple dated copies for important progress.
- Store them on a different physical device from the installation disk.
Windows File History and macOS Time Machine can add versioned copies when the save directory is included in their scope. They are an extra recovery layer, not a substitute for identifying the correct folder.
How do Steam Deck and Proton change save locations?
A Windows game running through Proton may keep its Windows-style save inside the compatibility prefix rather than in the native Linux home directory. A common pattern is steamapps/compatdata/<AppID>/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/, followed by the game’s Documents, AppData or Saved Games path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNative Linux games can use the normal Linux home locations, while a title’s Cloud files may still appear under userdata/<SteamID>/<AppID>/remote/. Inspect the actual prefix and test a copied save before deleting anything. Valve’s Dynamic Cloud Sync APIs can upload data when a Deck session is suspended and download it before another device launches, but that behavior depends on developer support rather than a separate consumer switch.
Do not sync desktop-only display settings between a high-resolution computer and a Deck. Valve specifically recommends keeping graphics and resolution settings out of Cloud data.

Which games and files will Steam Cloud not protect?
Manual backups are essential when:
- The developer never enabled Cloud or enabled it on only one operating system.
- The save is outside the folders Steam watches.
- The game came from another store or a manual installer.
- You are backing up emulator data from software such as RetroArch, Dolphin, PCSX2 or RPCS3.
- You disabled Cloud, deleted the local files and no longer have the old computer.
Valve states that if Cloud was never enabled and the previous machine is unavailable, those saves cannot be recovered. A Steam installation archive cannot reconstruct a save that was never included in it.

These tools address different failure modes; none replaces a dated copy on independent storage.
Ludusavi
Ludusavi is a free, open-source GUI and command-line utility with a community save-location manifest covering tens of thousands of games. It creates versioned local backups and can use Rclone for optional remote storage. It is a strong default for one computer and local, no-account backups. Moving those backups to another PC remains a manual schedule of backup and restore.
Game Backup Monitor
Game Backup Monitor watches the game process, compresses saves with 7-Zip when the game exits and keeps numbered history. It is primarily a Windows local-archive solution.
GameSave Manager
On Windows, GameSave Manager can relocate a save folder into a synchronized folder and leave a link behind. Live-folder synchronization can race a game that is still writing, so close the game before allowing a sync.
Syncthing and OpenSave
Syncthing mirrors folders peer-to-peer but is not save-aware; corruption can replicate as quickly as a good file. OpenSave provides peer-to-peer save synchronization without an account and supports Windows, Linux, Deck and macOS since version 2.4, provided the devices meet.
Hoard and other newer projects
Hoard uses session snapshots, tracks userdata/remote and Proton prefixes, and offers a managed EU plan or self-hosting with S3-compatible storage. Its stated limit is important: it does not merge divergent saves. Hoard’s managed One tier lists 2 GB of storage and three devices on its free tier; self-hosting has no Hoard quota. Hoard also notes that Ludusavi and Game Backup Monitor have longer bug-report histories, which may matter for a very long campaign.
OpenCloudSaves was archived in January 2025 and should not be selected as a maintained current service. SaveSync targets co-op world sharing rather than personal multi-PC follow-me saves. Aletheia and Tachyon are newer; Tachyon was described as a Windows-only beta with post-beta pricing not published on the comparison page.

Never point one save tool at another tool’s backup directory. Doing so can synchronize a stale mirror instead of the live save.
How do I transfer Steam games and saves to another PC?
Use separate sequences for installation files and player data.
- On the old computer, close the game and finish Cloud synchronization.
- Create a Steam installation backup or copy the game folder from
steamapps/common. - Copy each game’s dated save folder, including any Proton prefix or publisher-launcher data.
- Move both archives to a separate external SSD or hard drive.
- Install Steam on the new computer and sign in to the owning account.
- Restore the Steam backup, or place the copied game folder in the library and use Install followed by Verify integrity of game files.
- Restore saves to the title’s real path before launching. If Cloud is enabled, resolve any conflict only after preserving both local and downloaded copies.
A portable SSD is preferable when you will restore large games often; a high-capacity external hard drive is usually more economical for archiving many titles. The key requirement is a different physical device, not a particular interface or brand.
Why is Steam backup not working?
- The backup option is missing: confirm the game is fully installed and patched through Steam, then check Properties > Installed Files.
- Restore stops or fails: move Steam to an ASCII-only path and select the folder containing the completed backup files, not the whole drive.
- Steam downloads everything again: confirm the copied folder is in the active library, then use Install and verify; a mismatched or incomplete folder cannot satisfy Steam’s manifest.
- The game launches without progress: the save is probably outside the installation archive. Locate the developer-defined folder and restore it separately.
- Cloud is not syncing: check the global and per-game toggles, finish the game’s exit process, and inspect the remote-storage page for uploaded files.
- A Cloud conflict keeps returning: stop launching on multiple devices, preserve both versions, choose one deliberately and verify it before allowing another upload.
- A library is present but games will not start: use the Storage page’s Repair Library command when available, then verify the game files.
What is the safest Steam backup routine?
- After meaningful progress, let Cloud finish if the game supports it.
- Quit the game completely.
- Copy the real save folder to a dated directory.
- Keep several generations for important games.
- Periodically create a Steam installation backup after updates settle.
- Copy completed archives to a separate SSD or hard drive.
- Before a major PC, operating-system or Deck change, download a manual Cloud copy and test restoring a save copy.
This layered approach separates reinstall convenience from progress recovery. Steam’s archive handles the large installation, Cloud handles supported cross-device synchronization, and your dated external copies provide the history that Cloud itself does not retain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I back up a Steam game while it is installed on a secondary library drive?
Yes. The Backup game files command works from the game’s own Properties page regardless of which Steam library contains it. For a folder-copy method, use the active library shown in Steam’s Storage settings rather than assuming the default C: path.
Will reinstalling Steam delete my existing Steam Cloud saves?
Reinstalling the client does not by itself guarantee a local save remains, because local files can be removed during cleanup. Before uninstalling, download the title’s files from Steam’s remote-storage page and copy any non-Cloud save folders manually.
Can I use a USB flash drive for a Steam backup?
You can, provided it has enough free capacity and the completed archive is copied safely. Large game archives are generally better suited to an external SSD or hard drive because flash drives vary widely in sustained write speed and endurance.
How can I identify the correct Steam AppID for a save folder?
Open the game’s Properties and check the Updates page for its AppID, then match that number under userdata. The AppID folder’s remote directory is where Steam Cloud files commonly reside, but the game’s primary save may still be elsewhere.
