Valve’s Steam Client Beta update dated October 26, 2026 adds a dedicated game-invite widget to Big Picture Mode and the SteamOS/Steam Deck client. Instead of scrolling back to the original chat message, you can accept an invite from a panel above the chat composer. Invites sent by friends in a group can also be accepted directly in the group-chat window. The update remains beta software, so menu labels and behavior may change before a stable release.
What changed in Steam’s game-invite system?
The main change is a persistent invite surface in Big Picture chat. Game invitations now appear in a dedicated widget above the text-entry field rather than only at the location of the original message. That means an invite remains discoverable even after the conversation has moved on.

| Area | Before this beta update | With the October 26, 2026 beta |
|---|---|---|
| Invite discoverability | Find the original invite message in chat history. | Use the dedicated invite widget above the chat composer. |
| Group invitations | Switch to the inviting friend’s one-to-one chat tab. | Accept the invite from the group-chat window when it is surfaced there. |
| Gamepad focus | Some chat locations could trap or lose controller focus. | Focus styling and navigation were revised, and known stuck-navigation points were fixed. |
| Message alerts | Each chat message could create a separate short notification. | Friend-chat notifications are rolled up instead of showing a separate two-second alert for every message. |
| Voice controls | Volume control was not exposed per friend in the Big Picture friend menu. | The friend context menu provides an individual voice-chat level. |
Valve’s published wording describes the key behavior as: “Game invites from friends now have a dedicated widget in the chat window above the text entry, instead of having to navigate to the exact message in the chat history window.”
How do I accept a Steam invite in Big Picture Mode?
Open the relevant chat and look immediately above the text-entry field. If a friend has sent a game invite, the new widget is the place to select it; you no longer need to scroll through the conversation to locate the original message.

Do Steam Deck group-chat invites show in the group chat?
Yes. When a friend sends an invite while you share a group conversation, the invitation can be surfaced in that group-chat window. You do not have to leave the group and open a separate direct-message tab first.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Restart Steam after changing the beta channel.
- Return to the chat list and reopen the conversation.
- Use the current group-chat tab if the invite came from a group member.
- If controller focus is stuck, move focus to another chat element and back, or restart Big Picture Mode.
- Leave the beta channel if instability outweighs the new invite controls.
Because this is pre-release functionality, a missing widget can reflect an expired invitation, a synchronization delay or a beta build change rather than a permanent account problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the new Steam invite widget available in the stable client?
The October 26, 2026 change is documented for Steam Client Beta. Valve can revise the interface before moving it to the stable channel, and the rollout date for stable users is not stated.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I accept a Steam invite without opening Chat?
The documented change is specifically a chat-window widget, so Chat still provides the entry point. It removes the need to search message history, but it does not describe a separate system-wide invite screen.
Does this update change a game’s multiplayer support?
No. It changes how Steam surfaces invitations and controller navigation. Whether an invitation can join a session still depends on the game and its online services.
Will leaving Steam Beta remove the invite improvements?
A stable-channel client may not retain beta-only behavior until Valve ships the changes publicly. Switching channels also requires a restart, and channel availability can change over time.
