Steam Community Market transactions let you buy and sell eligible game items with other players, but every completed transaction settles in Steam Wallet funds rather than cash. To use the Market, your account generally needs a qualifying Steam purchase that is more than seven days old but no more than one year old, plus Steam Guard enabled for at least 15 days.
This guide explains the exact buying and selling workflows, buy orders, fees, wallet limits, funding options, and the account, device, payment, and item restrictions that commonly prevent Market access.

What is the Steam Community Market?
The Community Market is Steam’s marketplace for eligible game items. Community members post listings, other users buy them, and the resulting balance is credited to the seller’s Steam Wallet. The live Market interface includes item search, current listings, active-listing management, and market history.
Eligibility is controlled at two levels. Steam must allow the account to use Market features, and the game developer must make a particular game and item eligible. Some games do not participate at all, while individual items can have their own trading or market cooldown.

- This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.
Market transactions are not a cash exchange. Steam processes both sides through the Steam Wallet, so a sale creates Wallet credit and a purchase consumes Wallet credit or another accepted Steam Wallet funding source.
How do I check whether my account can use the Market?
Before trying to list or buy anything, confirm both account requirements: a recent qualifying purchase and an established Steam Guard period.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Make sure the account has a successful Steam purchase. Steam Support says the purchase must be older than seven days and not older than one year. Redeeming a Steam gift does not satisfy this purchase requirement.
- Check Steam Guard. Steam Guard must have been enabled for at least 15 days. Enabling or re-enabling it starts a 15-day Market restriction.
- Check the item itself. An item can remain unmarketable until the date shown in your inventory, even when the account is otherwise eligible.
These are separate checks. Passing the purchase-age test does not bypass a Steam Guard waiting period, and an eligible account still cannot list an item that is on a game-imposed cooldown.
How do I buy an item on the Steam Market?
For an item that is already listed, the quickest method is to open its listing and choose Buy now. Review the displayed total and confirm; Steam treats a completed Community Market purchase as final, with no right to a refund or reversal.
- Open the Steam Community Market and search for the game and item.
- Select the item page and review the available listings, prices, and any item restrictions shown by Steam.
- Choose Buy now on the listing you want.
- Confirm the transaction after checking the total, including the Steam transaction fee and any applicable publisher fee.
- After completion, find the item in your Steam inventory. The purchase amount is deducted from your Steam Wallet balance.
Because the transaction is irreversible after completion, check the item name, game, quantity, and price before the final confirmation. A mistaken purchase cannot be undone through a Market refund.
How do I sell an item?
You can start from the Community Market or from an eligible item in your Steam inventory. You choose the asking price, confirm the listing, and wait for another user or a matching buy order to purchase it.

- Choose the option to sell the item.
- Enter your asking price and review the amount you will receive after fees.
- Confirm the listing using Steam’s confirmation prompt.
- Manage the listing from the active-listings area until it sells.
To stop a listing before it sells, open your active listings and remove it. Removing an unsold listing does not create a sale or Wallet credit; it simply returns the item to your inventory.
The item must be marketable at the time you list it. Items purchased in-game or on the Market may remain locked until the date displayed in inventory. Timed Dota 2 drops are permanently non-marketable.
How do Steam buy orders work?
Buy orders are designed for commodity items, where individual copies are interchangeable. Instead of taking an existing listing immediately, you specify the highest price you will pay and the quantity you want. Steam waits for matching listings and uses a lower price when one is available.
Set a maximum price and quantity
A buy order contains two controls: the maximum unit price and the number of units. If an item appears below your maximum, the order can fill at that lower price rather than automatically paying your ceiling.
Understand Steam’s matching order
When several eligible items are available, Steam selects the cheapest qualifying items first. If prices are equal, the oldest listing is selected. Competing buy orders are filled oldest first, so an earlier order at the same price has priority over a later one.
Choose between speed and price certainty
- Buy now: completes against an existing listing and is appropriate when you need the item immediately.
- Buy order: can reduce the price you pay but may wait indefinitely for a seller at or below your maximum.
Buy orders only make sense where the game treats copies as interchangeable commodities. For unique items, an existing listing is usually the relevant purchase route because attributes, wear, or other individual characteristics can differ.

What fees does the Steam Market charge?
Steam Support lists a 5% Steam transaction fee with a $0.01 minimum. The fee is shown to the buyer at confirmation. Steam also lists a current 10% publisher fee for Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, Counter-Strike 2, and Artifact. Steam Support does not state a year for these figures, so treat them as the current figures on that support page and verify the confirmation screen before completing a transaction.
| Charge | Amount | How it is applied |
|---|---|---|
| Steam transaction fee | 5%, minimum $0.01 | Displayed to the buyer during confirmation |
| Publisher fee for Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, Counter-Strike 2, and Artifact | 10% | Game-specific fee listed by Steam Support |
The combined effect means the buyer’s total and the seller’s net proceeds can differ from the visible item price. Use the amount Steam displays on the confirmation or listing screen instead of calculating from the headline price alone.

Steam Support currently describes a Steam Wallet balance limit of about $2,000 in USD-equivalent terms and a maximum price of about $1,800 for one listing. Steam says these limits can change and may be converted for other currencies.
Steam blocks a listing when your existing Wallet balance plus the sale price would exceed the Wallet limit. This can happen even when the item itself is otherwise eligible. Lowering the asking price or spending Wallet funds first may bring the account below the cap, but the limit is enforced by Steam at listing time.
| Limit | Current Steam Support figure | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Wallet balance | About $2,000 USD-equivalent | Current figure; limits may change |
| Maximum price for one listing | About $1,800 USD-equivalent | Current figure; currency conversion may apply |
Can I withdraw Steam Market money?
No. Steam states that all Community Market sales and purchases are completed using the Steam Wallet. Proceeds cannot be withdrawn to a bank, transferred to another Steam account, or sent to a third-party account.
The balance remains inside Steam’s ecosystem. You can use Wallet funds for Steam purchases, and Steam says Wallet funds may also be used to purchase Steam gifts, but the Market does not provide a cash-out route.

Why can’t I use the Steam Community Market?
Most access failures come from a temporary account, device, payment, security, or item restriction. The length of the wait depends on what triggered it.
| Possible cause | Typical restriction | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Newly authorized device | 7 days | Steam may treat a device as new after cookies are cleared, the browser changes, Steam is reinstalled, or the computer is reformatted. |
| Steam Guard recently enabled or re-enabled | 15 days | Keep Steam Guard active until the waiting period ends. |
| Password reset | 5 days; up to 30 days after more than two months of inactivity | Wait for the security restriction to expire and avoid repeated resets. |
| Unverified credit card or PayPal funding method | 3 days | Complete card verification when Steam offers it; verification can remove the restriction. |
| Trade ban, VAC ban, trade cooldown, or limited account | Depends on the account status | Review the warning shown by Steam; some restrictions cannot be shortened. |
| Item-specific cooldown | Until the inventory date | Open the item in inventory and wait until Steam marks it marketable. |
Device restrictions
A device that Steam sees as newly authorized normally cannot use the Market for seven days. Clearing cookies, switching browsers, reinstalling Steam, or reformatting a computer can make an established setup appear new and restart this type of wait.
Security restrictions
Steam Guard must be active for 15 days before Market access. A password reset normally causes a five-day restriction; when the account has been inactive for more than two months, Steam Support says the restriction can last 30 days.
Payment verification restrictions
An unverified credit card or PayPal funding method can trigger a three-day wait. When available, completing card verification can remove that restriction rather than requiring the full waiting period.

Bans and account status
Trade bans, VAC bans, trade cooldowns, and limited-account status can block Market actions. These are account-level conditions, so changing browsers or reinstalling Steam will not resolve them.
Item cooldowns
Market access for an account does not make every inventory item immediately sellable. Steam displays the relevant date on items that are temporarily locked. Timed Dota 2 drops are a permanent exception: they remain non-marketable.

How can I add money to Steam Wallet for Market purchases?
Steam Support identifies Steam Gift Cards and Steam Wallet Codes as ways to add Wallet funds. A Steam Wallet gift card is the direct product phrase to look for, but availability, denomination, region, and the specific listing vary.
- Obtain a Steam Gift Card or Steam Wallet Code that is valid for your account’s region.
- Redeem the code through Steam’s Wallet or code-redemption flow.
- Confirm that the balance appears in your Wallet before returning to the Market.
- Use that Wallet balance at the Market checkout; remember that completed purchases cannot be reversed.
Redeeming a gift card adds Wallet funds, but redeeming a Steam gift sent by another user does not satisfy the separate qualifying-purchase requirement for Market access.

Should I buy immediately or wait with a buy order?
The right method depends on whether you value immediate delivery or a target price. Compare the trade-offs before committing Wallet funds.
| Decision factor | Instant listing purchase | Buy order |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Immediate when you confirm an available listing | Waits for a matching seller |
| Price control | Accepts the selected listing’s displayed price | Sets a maximum and may fill below it |
| Item type | Works for listed items, including distinctive individual items | Best suited to interchangeable commodities |
| Fees | Steam’s 5% fee plus any applicable publisher fee | Same fee structure when the order fills |
| Account status | Requires Market access and an eligible item or listing | Requires Market access and remains subject to restrictions while waiting |
| Where value goes | Wallet funds are spent and cannot be refunded after completion | Funds are used when the order matches; Wallet value cannot be cashed out |
For a needed item, an instant purchase avoids waiting but may cost more. For a commodity you can postpone buying, a buy order lets you define a ceiling and accept only matching prices.
What should I check before listing or buying?
- Confirm that the account has a qualifying purchase older than seven days and no older than one year.
- Confirm Steam Guard has been enabled for at least 15 days.
- Check the item’s marketable date in inventory.
- Review the full buyer total or seller proceeds after Steam and publisher fees.
- Check Wallet balance and the approximate $2,000 balance cap before listing a high-value item.
- Remember that a completed purchase is final and cannot be refunded or reversed.
- Use a buy order only when waiting is acceptable and the item is an interchangeable commodity.
- Keep the device, payment method, and account security status stable while waiting out a restriction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Steam Wallet funds to buy a Steam gift?
Yes. Steam says Wallet funds may be used to purchase Steam gifts. That lets you spend an in-Steam balance on a gift, but it does not turn the balance into cash or make it transferable to another account.
Who decides whether a game participates in the Community Market?
The game developer decides whether its game participates. A title can therefore be absent from the Market even when your Steam account satisfies all account-level requirements.
